“ First an apology; the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III arrived in our office well over eight months ago (when we were 'between studios') and, though we've been using it regularly every since, the avalanche of digital SLRs that arrived in January caused this review to be bumped down the queue so often that it started to develop a persecution complex.

This is because, although there's no doubt that the Mark III sets the standard for digital SLR resolution and significantly narrows the gap between '35mm format' and 'medium format' digital cameras, it is also undoubtedly a niche product that will, by now, have been bought (or earmarked for purchase) by pretty much everyone who is ever likely to hand over the best part of $8000 for one.

So what's our take on the EOS-1DS Mark III after spending so long with it? The answer is, I guess kind of predictable: It is undeniably impressive, and though it appears on the surface to be a fairly low key update to the Mark II, the more you use it the more you realize how all the little improvements add up to a significantly better camera (and that's aside from the resolution hike). Nikon's D3, launched almost simultaneously to rapturous response might stolen a little of the Mark III's thunder, but the truth is that in many respects it is the Canon flagship model that most deserves to sit at the very top of the digital SLR tree.... ”

“ Canon started from scratch with the Mark III. And that is obvious with the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. It is much more than a Mark II with a new image sensor. There has been thorough thought about the whole camera and the entire structure has been altered without making the photographer used to working with a Canon EOS-1 lose his way. A huge achievement and it shows what the Canon design department is capable of.

And yes, I know that Nikon has crept up or already surpassed the EOS-1Ds Mark III as far as noise is concerned and that there will be a camera on the market soon with even more pixels on a full-frame. These are only challenging Canon to improve the 1Ds even further and we should be happy with competitors digging into Canon's heels. Otherwise it would be too easy for Canon and there would be absolutely no competition which would be bad for the consumer. We can't deny the fact that the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is currently one of the best high resolution D-SLR cameras that you can get. I'd say; go for it, capture some nice shots and enjoy everything the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III produces. You won't regret it. Absolutely top of the top! ... ”

“ The EOS 1Ds Mark III is a remarkable display of engineering prowess. Do you need a weatherproofed camera that is strong enough to drive nails while producing the world's best image quality? If so, the 1Ds is a bargain. If not, the Canon EOS 5D, $2180 (review) is a better value.

I never wanted a 1Ds. Now I do. But probably I'll wait for the revision of the EOS 5D. ... ”

“ Price (nearly 2x) is the other difference between the 1Ds III and the 1D III - the price tag will be the biggest obstacle for most people considering the purchase of this camera. However, as we saw with the 1D Mark III, demand is high enough that the camera remains unavailable for purchase at this time - 6 weeks after initial shipments were made. Get on a list if you want one anytime soon.

I've been anxiously awaiting this camera body since the Canon EOS 1D Mark III was released. The 1D Mark III made my 1Ds Mark II seem somewhat antiquated - due for an update, but I continued to use it as my primary body because of the full frame sensor and significantly higher resolution. And it is still a great camera. But, the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III now gives me the best of everything (well, 10 fps would be nice) - and I'm lovin it. ... ”

“ The EOS-1Ds Mark III is very similar to the EOS-1D Mark III except for the latter's 10.1 megapixel resolution and 1.3x magnification factor. I won't go over the features they share again here. Read my previous review of the Canon EOS-1D Mark III here . However when I brought that first image up on my computer screen, just a quick snapshot of a tree near my house, I could instantly tell I was looking at something head and shoulders above any other camera, digital or film, I've ever shot with. That includes my medium format and 4x5 cameras. This was a hand-held shot with a regular zoom lens, not one with the IS (Image Stabilizer) feature. On top of that I'm none too steady when it comes to hand-holding a camera. Imagine what this would look like if I'd used a tripod!... ”
