“ The Canon Powershot A1100 IS is a great budget-priced compact which offers simple point-and-shoot operation with a degree of control for those who want a little more involvement with their photography. Although not the most compact of designs by today's standards, it looks good, feels robust and is comfortable to hold.

The 4x optical zoom just about provides wide enough coverage to cope with most of the typical photo situations from group shots to head and shoulders portraits and it can close focus to 3cm - admittedly not as good as some Canon compacts, but you can fill the frame with a shot of, say, a butterfly, at that distance.

The picture quality of the PowerShot is, for a camera in this price bracket, very good, though it's tendency for the evaluative metering on our review model to over-expose bright subjects and under-expose dark subjects was a shame and resulted in poorer quality photos than the camera is undoubtedly capable of producing..

Despite those problems the A1100 is a great all round budget camera with some excellent features that will appeal to casual picture takers as well as more demanding photographers. It's particulary well equipped for low-light photography and the optical viewfinder, a feature that you don't see in too many compacts nowadays, makes it ideal if you need a camera that can go for a long stretch wthout a change of batteries. If you're looking for an affordable point-and-shoot digital camera, it should definitely be on your shortlist... ”

“ Given its speed and performance, the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS isn't a very solid choice for the price. But because it offers so little improvement over the A1000, if you can find last year's A1000, you should grab it save yourself $50. The A1100 certainly won't disappoint, but for the extra cash I'd like to see greater evolution in terms of capabilities, features, design—even better, all of them... ”

“ For a low-cost point-and-shoot pocket camera, the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS gets the job done. It delivers better photo quality than other cameras at its price point and if you like the convenience of AA batteries and the availability of a viewfinder, it's a smart choice... ”

“ You get a lot for $200 when buying a camera these days. The PowerShot A1100 IS provides a very good price/performance ratio, and it’s even available in four fashionable colors (blue, green, grey, and pink). If you’re looking for a good entry-level camera, you should consider the A1100... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS can be simply put as a 12 megapixel update to the old A1000 with a new processor and a few small changes. It has the same 4X optical zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD and for most part, functions and features. The A1100 IS comes in your choice of 4 colors, is easy to hold and has an optical viewfinder.

Everything else also remains the same – point-and-shoot operation, quick performance (though there’s a slight drop in shot-to-shot and continuous shooting thanks to larger file sizes) and good image quality. The camera’s new DIGIC 4 uses more noise reduction so the Canon A1100’s image quality is a touch softer but noticeably cleaner than the output from last year’s A1000. In my opinion, that’s a decent trade off since for most part, details are well preserved up to ISO 800. My only gripe with the DIGIC 4 processor is battery life takes a toll here on the PowerShot A1100 – a 22% drop from the previous model, to be precise.

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS comes with a new Smart Auto shooting mode and iContrast tool in playback but also secretly does away with the old camera’s photo category and sound memo features. So you’re practically sacrificing 2 old features for 2 new ones. The new features may appeal to beginners, but aren’t things that normal users can’t live without.

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is a camera that I can recommend but not with a whole lot of enthusiasm. The camera takes good quality photos, has good performance and point-and-shoot feature set, but I don’t think the extra 2 megapixels justify the battery life and slight performance drop versus the old model. After all, 10 megapixels is already enough to make fairly large prints (and I don’t think users of the A-series cameras would be making billboards with their photos). The 12 megapixels here doesn’t bring a significant in detail or total resolution anyway... ”

“ To start out 2009, Canon has released the A1100 IS, upgrading the A1000 IS from last year. Two of the major upgrades to the A1100 IS are a 12.1-Megapixel sensor and the new DIGIC 4 processor. This new processor allows the camera to access information taken from thousands of images to correctly choose the proper shooting mode for the current scene or subject you are framing. It also helps improve focus speed, accuracy, exposure and white balance. Other new additions include Canon's i-Contrast technology as well as Face Self-Timer, which waits for an additional face to enter the frame before capturing the image. This allows the photographer to take his or her time getting into the frame after setting up the camera for a group photo including him or herself. Carrying over from the previous model are the major features like Optical image stabilization and 4x optical zoom.

Weighing exactly the same as the A1000 IS, Canon has found a way to pack even more features into an already astounding package. The hand grip on the right side and the zoom coupled around the shutter release allows for easy one-handed operation. On the back, the controls lay nicely under your thumb giving you total control. Using these well configured buttons to navigate the logically organized menu system is incredibly easy.

The PowerShot A1100 IS is another excellent addition into an already fantastic line of digicams from Canon. This easy-to-use compact camera offers many high-end features, like the 12.1-Megapixel imaging sensor and Canons new DIGIC 4 processor, which combined help it provide good performance and capture beautiful images. With a MSRP of US$199.99, we fell this camera will make an excellent choice for the home or office user... ”

“ At first glance the new Canon Powershot A1100 IS looks very similar to its bigger brother, the A2100. I reviewed both cameras at the same time and actually preferred the slightly cheaper A1100 model in many ways. Although offering a smaller, lower-resolution 2.5 inch LCD screen and shorter 4x zoom lens, the A1100 is noticeably smaller and lighter, offers a faster maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle 35mm focal length, has a true optical viewfinder, and benefits from having a curved hand-grip area. Whilst the A2100 will fit into a trouser pocket or handbag, the A1100 easily fits, which means that you're more likely to carry it around with you.

The Canon Powershot A1100 IS builds on the key strengths of the previous A1000 model by adding even more beginner-friendly features. The A1100 is a compact camera that produces excellent images in good light and which covers a versatile focal range for such a small camera thanks to the 4x zoom lens. The wealth of different scene modes on offer are now accompanied by the ultimate point-and-shoot Smart Auto and Easy modes, which really do take the guesswork out of using the A1100 and make it suitable for all the family. Other beginner-friendly features include Face Select & Track, which is a great way of focusing on who really matters in your photos, and FaceSelf-Timer which easily allows you to take part in those all-important family group shots.

The move to more megapixels - up to 12.1 from the A1000's 10 - thankfully hasn't come at the cost of image quality, although the A1100 still suffers from less than stellar images in low-light due to obvious noise appearing at ISO 400 and faster. Other key disappointments include that low-resolution LCD screen and an even slower continuous shooting speed of 1.1fps. Disappointingly for UK buyers, the launch price has shot up from £169 to £219, although to be fair to Canon comparable price rises are happening across the industry as Sterling struggles against the Yen.

Overall the Canon Powershot A1100 IS adds a number of improvements to an already attractively designed camera, making it even more ideally suited to its family target audience... ”

“ For a pair of Benjamins, the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS offers a well-rounded arsenal of image control features while serving up a large helping of basic shooting options and functionality. There are two separate Auto modes and a gaggle of Scene modes available on the PowerShot A1100 IS. Program AE was as far as we could go in terms of advanced control, so seasoned photographers and intermediate shooters will want to climb up a few rungs to Canon's more power-packed models. In most shooting environments, the PowerShot A1100 IS performed very well, though we did run into a few issues in low light and the narrow aperture made it difficult to focus landscapes. Canon’s menu system was highly intuitive, and the interface was anything but complex. The PowerShot A1100 IS ships in three different pastel colors, which will certainly win over the female crowd, and its Face Select feature worked without a hitch. If you're looking for a good point-and-shoot on the cheap that runs on AA batteries, the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is definitely worth a look.... ”
