“ The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS camera may not be a perfect camera; we enjoyed working with it tremendously. All the functions are in a logical spot and the large monitor on the back makes it easy to identify with the subject. For the creative photographer it is a pity the manual settings have disappeared, since these made the PowerShot A cameras unique. On the other hand, the simplicity that comes with it has its advantages too. Despite the comments on the image quality of higher ISO values and the patience you need for flash photography, the road Canon is taking with the new Canon PowerShot A2000 IS is mainly successful. Some more focus on the image quality and Canon holds yet another camera that stands out... ”

“ The Canon A2000 IS does a good job upholding the strong tradition of Canon's A-series cameras. Its 6x zoom lens shows very good optical quality, and its 10-megapixel sensor delivers plenty of detail at low ISOs. It does pretty well at high ISOs as well, as you can make 8x10 inch prints from its output up to about ISO 800, and ISO 1,600 images are usable at 4x6 inches. (Forget about the ISO 3,200 setting though, it's very rough and low-resolution, even at 4x6 inches.)

Important for family photography, the Canon A2000 IS also handles household incandescent lighting unusually well, producing very nice-looking images (rather than the terribly yellow photos many digicams produce under such circumstances). The A2000 uses AA batteries, something many users look for in a camera, figuring they'll never be far from finding replacements when needed.

Really, the Canon A2000 IS has only a single defect, but it's a substantial one if you plan much flash photography: You and your subjects will grow old waiting for the A2000's flash to recycle, particularly after a full-power discharge, or if your batteries are running low. We measured full-power flash recycling at 11 seconds, something of a record in our recent digicam testing... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS has a couple of significant factors in its favor. It's inexpensive ($230), has a good zoom ratio for a small point-and-shoot, and did well in our color scoring. On the other hand, there's no manual control to speak of, it struggled in most of our other tests, and the lens is slow, particularly for handheld telephoto shooting in less-than-ideal light. If a long zoom at a low price strikes you as a winning combination, the A2000 is worth considering, but you should keep the downsides in mind... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS is a nice compact camera which is very affordable. With 10 megapixels, a 6X optical zoom lens, optical image stabilization and 3 inch LCD, and now a slimmer design than its predecessors, the PowerShot A2000 is certainly appealing to those looking for a capable camera with a low price tag.

The PowerShot A2000 is by default an easy to use camera with functions and menu navigation that can be understood by most users. And its operation is made even easier still with the camera’s Easy Mode. Most point-and-shoot users would be pleased with the simplicity of the camera and a decent handful of scene modes. However, I should note that compared to its predecessors (A700, A710, A720 IS), the Canon A2000 IS has no manual controls, reduced accessory lineup and a slower lens – these were the big selling points of those cameras. Maybe they want you to upgrade to a higher end model, but any way, it’s disappointing to see the A-series slowly evolving from budget cameras with full manual controls to cheap point-and-shoots.

The camera delivers fairly good image quality up till ISO 800 as details remain intact and noise levels are fairly acceptable. In low-light, the most you would wanna go would be ISO 400. The camera manages to control lens distortion and color fringing well while the built-in red-eye removal system is very effective; so no rants about red-eye here. The part where you’d like to be weary of would be the camera’s slow lens that will tempt you to use higher ISO values in low-light – which will bring a lot of noise once you hit ISO 400 and above; the camera’s flash isn’t too powerful either so a tripod, a steady grip or both are recommended for low-light shooting.

The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a really capable, all rounder point-and-shoot camera. When it gets dark, the camera’s abilities aren’t so hot – means going for parties and clubbing with the A2000 IS may be a bit of an issue. Otherwise, the camera is fine for everything else... ”

“ In conclusion, I like the PowerShot A2000 IS -- it's a good choice in the entry-level, midzoom category, and I can recommend it, as long as you're not a big low light shooter. As I've said throughout this review, the PowerShot A2000 is definitely a step down from the A720 that came before it. I can only hope that Canon gets the message and releases something in the near future with manual controls, conversion lens support, and an optical viewfinder that made the A720 so great... ”

“ As we said at the top of this page, Canon’s PowerShot A2000 IS is a good value compact with a surprisingly long zoom and effective stabilisation for the money. It’s easy to use, captures sharp, consumer-friendly images and powered by readily-available AA batteries, so you’ll rarely get caught short.

It’s a great choice if the price is right, but heavy discounting at some stores means the next steps up may only cost a small amount more. If you can find a good deal on a Canon IXUS 870IS / SD 880IS, or a Panasonic Lumix FX35 and can afford to pay the extra, you’ll end up with a classier and more capable camera.

But it’s worth remembering while these step-up models offer wider lenses, nicer screens, better build and extra features, the image quality between them and the PowerShot A2000 IS is roughly the same. All three have 10 Megapixel sensors and the A2000 IS arguably delivers the most consumer-friendly output of the three. So if you prefer the longer 6x zoom of the A2000 IS and the convenience of AA battery power, it’s recommended for the money – just compare the prices closely and try to forget the manual control of its predecessor... ”

“ I've been using A-series digicams since the introduction of the groundbreaking little A20, and the redesigned A2000 IS is substantially different in terms of looks and usability from its predecessors – clearly targeted toward casual photographers rather than photo enthusiasts. I suspect that many loyal A-series fans are going to be very disappointed, and that's too bad because the A2000 IS is a first rate general use digicam: easily pocketable, feature rich, relatively quick, and capable of producing near pro-quality images.

I've been carrying the A2000 IS around for about six weeks now. I've used it to shoot the marine fish catalog for an on-line aquarium store, portraits (formal, informal, and environmental), action (skateboarders and BMX bikers), my neighbor's new litter of puppies, and several autumn events (parades, festivals, and a farmers markets). The A2000 IS handled all outdoor image-making chores with aplomb and amazingly good results. Indoors and in low/dim lighting, the A2000 IS starts to show a few warts like blocked up shadow areas, burnt out highlight areas, and muddy loking images due to increased noise levels at ISO 400 and higher.

Canon's A-series digital cameras have always dominated the middle ground between entry-level point-and-shoots and more expensive prosumer digicams like the Canon PowerShot G10, but not anymore: the A2000 is definitely more entry-level than advanced, and serious shooters will probably dislike the A2000's dearth of manual exposure options, lack of an optical viewfinder, and the disappearance of the trademark A-series handgrip. But with a long focal range for a pocketable camera, a huge 3.0 inch screen, amazing ease of use, and dependably impressive images in good light, beginners, casual photographers, family photographers, and weight/size conscious travelers will love the A2000... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS is a little expensive for a mid-level compact, and the overall build quality and low-angle monitor may cause some disappointment. The lack of the usual A-series manual exposure options and optical viewfinder may also put off some potential buyers. However the camera is extremely easy to use, the wide zoom range is very versatile and the performance and picture quality are well up to the high standard we’ve come to expect from Canon. ... ”

“ Depending upon your level of experience, the new Canon Powershot A2000 IS will either be an attractive proposition or a disappointment. Beginners will love it - the A2000 is a camera that produces excellent images in good light, covers a large focal range for such a small camera thanks to the 6x zoom lens, and has a massive 3 inch LCD screen on the back that can be viewed from a wide angle. The wealth of different scene modes is accompanied by the ultimate point-and-shoot Easy mode, which really does make the A2000 suitable for all the family.

The more experienced photographer, however, should look elsewhere. Canon's high-end A-series have traditionally bridged the gap between cheap compacts and more expensive and complicated cameras, offering a full-range of creative shooting modes, but not anymore. Both the new A2000 and A1000 models have completely dispensed with the key feature that attracted owners of DSLRs looking for a second pocket camera, or those who wanted control over what the camera was doing. It's almost as if Canon have crippled their A-series cameras to encourage more people to buy one of their entry-level DSLRs instead - not that I'm cynical or anything.

The A2000 IS also suffers from less than stellar image quality in low-light due to obvious noise appearing at ISO 400 and faster, the lack of any hand-grip which makes it difficult to hold, annoyingly slow flash recycle times, and a slow continuous shooting speed. Which leaves us with a solid mid-range camera that still comes recommended, particularly to its new family target audience, but not to the aspiring photographer that it once appealed to...... ”
