“ Canon's PowerShot A2100 IS is a good value compact with a longer than average zoom range, excellent image quality and very effective image stabilisation. Although it lacks the wide angle coverage of the Sony Cyber-shot DCS-W270 / W290 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS25, it has a broader overall zoom range and a longer telephoto equivalent of 216mm.

Though larger than many compacts, the PowerShot sits well in the hand and it's controls are easy to use, providing fast and intuitive access to the important settings. Rechargeable AA batteries also provide a more flexible alternative to a proprietary Lithium Ion pack, although flash recycling can be slow.

The 3in / 230k pixel screen, like most compact LCD panels is difficult to see in bright sunlight, but in all other respects provides an excellent view for both recording and playback.

Though it has no manual exposure controls, there are plenty of options for manual setting of ISO, white balance, auto focussing and other parameters, and for point and shoot operation the auto and easy modes have been augmented with effective scene detection.

The Canon PowerShot A2100 IS produces very high quality images in terms of detail and exposure in a variety of conditions. At low ISO settings detail is sharp edge-to-edge with little evidence of noise in the shadow regions and only minimal fringing in demanding conditions. At higher ISO settings the Powershot's images benefit from subtle noise reduction that maintains image detail whils removing the worst, (though by no means all) of the noise.

So if you're after a solid compact with good automatic performance, decent image quality, the convenience of AA batteries and a broad zoom range (albeit lacking true wide angle), then the Canon PowerShot A2100 IS is a great choice and represents good value for money. Like its predecessor, it's easy to Recommend... ”

“ If iconic French candid/street photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau had carried Canon PowerShot A2100 IS cameras, rather than Leica rangefinders with 50mm lenses, I doubt their images would have suffered much and their creative possibilities would have been increased exponentially.

The A2100 IS makes an almost ideal first digital camera and it is an excellent choice for the primary family camera. It is also a very good choice for travelers who want a tough, lightweight, "go anywhere" camera that runs on universally available AA batteries. I carried the A2100 IS with me (pretty much everywhere I went) for two weeks and I was consistently impressed - just like I have been with every other "A" series Canon camera I've used to date... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A2100IS compact camera is beautifully designed, providing a wealth of possibilities to the beginning photographer. Ease and comfort have precedence, and with minor improvements that bring the image quality to nearly the same high level as its predecessor, we can say the camera is a successful successor. Although the A2100 IS is not perfect and feels more at home in good weather and broad daylight, the camera offers a lot of shooting fun and we certainly see the camera playing a big role in enhancing Canon’s market share of Canon in this segment. The A2100 IS camera is definitely worth your while!... ”

“ For a pure point-and-shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot A2100 IS is a good deal providing very good photo quality with the benefits of some extra zoom range and optical image stabilization. You'll just have to overlook its somewhat slow performance... ”

“ If you’re on a budget, but looking for a compact that will allow you to grow as a shooter, the Canon PowerShot A2100 IS is the answer. Right off the bat, we experienced another great image performance from Canon’s chief of the entry-level heap, even in low light. The PowerShot A2100 IS is stuffed with useful features like Long Shutter mode, which allowed us to shoot at night without the flash, and multiple Scene modes for an eclectic array of shooting environments. We weren’t too jazzed about the added bulk the PowerShot A2100 IS brings to the table, but its stealthy all-black color scheme lured us in. With a great interface, easy to use menus and an Auto mode that takes the cake, Canon delivers yet again, and the PowerShot A2100 IS is another solid addition to the PowerShot fleet for 2009... ”

“ The Canon Powershot A2100 IS builds on the key strengths of the previous A2000 model by adding even more beginner-friendly features. The A2100 is a fairly compact camera that produces excellent images in good light, covers a large focal range thanks to the 6x zoom lens, and has a massive 3 inch LCD screen on the back that can be easily viewed from a wide angle. The wealth of different scene modes on offer are now accompanied by the ultimate point-and-shoot Smart Auto and Easy modes, which really do take the guesswork out of using the A2100 and make it suitable for all the family. Other beginner-friendly features include Face Select & Track, which is a great way of focusing on who really matters in your photos, and FaceSelf-Timer which easily allows you to take part in those all-important family group shots.

The move to more megapixels - up to 12.1 from the A2000's 10 - thankfully hasn't come at the cost of image quality, although the A2100 still suffers from less than stellar images in low-light due to obvious noise appearing at ISO 400 and faster. Other key disappointments include the continued lack of any hand-grip which makes it difficult to hold, and an even slower continuous shooting speed of 1.1fps - thankfully the annoyingly slow flash-recycle time of the A2000 has been slightly improved on this model. Disappointingly for UK buyers, the launch price has shot up from £199 to £249, although to be fair to Canon comparable price rises are happening across the industry as Sterling struggles against the Yen.

Overall the Canon Powershot A2100 IS adds a number of improvements to an already solid and easy-to-use design, making it even more ideally suited to its family target audience... ”
