“ The Canon PowerShot A580 is a worthy successor to an entire line of moderately priced, yet capable compact cameras marketed by Canon over the past couple of years. In two weeks of use, I have found basic operation to be highly intuitive, with the controls working efficiently. Thanks to the matured design concept, the camera is largely free of the handling issues typically associated with small digicams. There were a few exceptions, functions I would never have thought existed if I had not read the manual, but these were few and far between. Operational speed was generally faster than one would expect in this class, with only the burst rate and the flash recycle time being a disappointment. Image quality has also exceeded my expectations in terms of detail, colour accuracy, AWB consistency and centre sharpness. A well-exposed and properly focused ISO 80 shot will produce an excellent 30x40cm print, with ISO 800 still enjoyable at the common 10x15cm size. ISO 1600 is best reserved for Web galleries though.

Casual snapshooters who have grown frustrated with the limitations of their cellphone cameras will find the 8 megapixel Canon PowerShot A580, with its sharp 4x zoom lens, above-average feature set, easy-to-use interface, well-implemented Face Detect function, fairly snappy performance and more than respectable image quality a giant leap forward. I am not so sure about more experienced photographers who are in the market for a carry-anywhere compact camera to supplement their main workhorse, or beginners eager to learn the basics of photography. While the PowerShot A580 caters to them with some advanced features such as spot metering, flash exposure lock, custom white balance and a usable exposure compensation function, the lack of direct access to aperture and shutter speed may eventually deter them from buying this model, especially given that Canon themselves offer the PowerShot A590IS, complete with a full set of manual controls, optical image stabilisation and support for conversion lenses, for about 20% more.... ”

“ No entry-level bargain camera is going to score highly on our comprehensive tests, but the Canon PowerShot A580 proved to be pretty scrappy. Thanks to its DIGIC III processor, its performance was nothing to sneeze at. And the same imaging engine gave it some very helpful tools like motion detection and face detection that Canon has harnessed in unique and interesting ways.

The main disappointment was in how the A580 handled highlights under a variety of situations. There was noticeable blooming at the edges of any white object. Corner softness was a bit high at wide angle, too. But, as I said, you've got to expect some issues.... ”

“ Canon's PowerShot A580 is the middle model in a trio of similar digicams that are targeted at family snapshooters. Affordably priced, their RRPs go up in $50 steps, corresponding with increasing resolution, zoom range and associated functions. All three models have 2.5-inch LCDs and are powered by two AA batteries. The two top models have 8-megapixel resolution and 4x optical zoom lenses, while the A470 combines 7.1 megapixels with 3.4x optical zoom. The top-end A590IS model is the only one with image stabilisation.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A580 is a very appealing entry-level digital camera. The combination of performance, quality and ease of use make it a great camera for the home or office. With features like a 4x optical zoom and 8-megapixel imaging sensor, you will be hard pressed to find a camera that compares with a MSRP of US$150. If you love the features of this model, but are looking for a little more manual control as well as Optical Image Stabilization, be sure to check out the PowerShot A590 IS , which can be had for about $30 more. ... ”

“ Ignoring the existence of the PowerShot A590 IS, the Canon PowerShot A580 would be a great point-and-shoot for the money. Unfortunately, for our recommendation, the A590 IS does exist, it offers optical image-stabilization and possibly superior focus-consistency, and it retails for a trifling $30 more. If you're in the market for a Canon PowerShot at this price-point, we suggest collecting your loose change and going for the A590 IS instead.... ”
