“ The Canon PowerShot A590 IS is a good all-around digital camera, capable enough to perform well under most shooting conditions. Its range of manual and automatic exposure modes will set any user level at ease, and its healthy selection of shooting tools and image adjustments will keep experienced users from getting bored. The A590 IS performs well in low lighting, with its maximum 15-second shutter time, and its range of preset Scene modes is useful in normal day-to-day situations. With advanced Face and Motion Detection technology, the A590 IS is a good option for people shots, though its timings aren't quite fast enough for sporting events or high-speed action. At an MSRP of $179.99, the PowerShot A590 IS definitely deserves a close look. There are cameras on the market with higher image quality and faster performance numbers, but with a street price touching $150, the Canon A590IS is a considerable bargain, and an easy Dave's Pick.... ”

“ Would the world be any poorer without the existence of the Canon PowerShot A590 IS? Since it offers little that's revolutionary, the answer is: 'very probably not'. However, it's cutely styled if overall a bit business-like, inoffensive in operation and to use a well-worn adage, the A590 IS 'does exactly what it says on the tin'. Also, for a model aimed at beginners, features are surprisingly comprehensive, its response times – save for that rather sluggish zoom – pretty good, and it's nice to see true optical image stabilisation included as standard on a camera that costs what it does. The mainly plastic build is well disguised by a more professional looking finish overall, while, once batteries and card are inserted, the whole thing feels reassuringly solid and robust. The Canon PowerShot A590 IS is the sort of camera you could entrust the kids with, with the dial twisted around to 'Easy' mode for convenience. So, in summing up, the A590 IS might well not inspire you to leap photographic boundaries, but does offer a tad more than the average point and shoot, allowing room for growth once you've got bored with pure snapshot photography. And £160 won't break the bank if you're looking for a mostly reliable, good value pocket camera for this summer's holiday.... ”

“ Considering its low price, the PowerShot A590 IS offers an amazingly complete list of features, with high-performance optical image stabilisation, a useful range of manual controls and exceptionally good performance, especially in low light conditions. Build quality and handling are also well above the average for this price bracket. The only real disappointment is the slightly inferior image quality, especially when compared to the next model up in the range, the A720 IS. However for under £120 it is still a major bargain.... ”

“ Photo quality was excellent, in most situations. The A590 takes well-exposed photos with vivid, accurate colors. Like most of Canon's cameras, images have a "smooth" appearance, while still retaining sharpness. In normal lighting, noise isn't a problem until you pass ISO 400, though noise reduction creeps in sooner (but stays relatively low). The same can't be said for low light situations: images start off with noticeable noise reduction artifacting, and things go downhill rapidly. Purple fringing wasn't a major problem, nor was redeye, as the camera removes it automatically.

I pretty much hit on all the negatives about the A590 in the preceding paragraphs, but here's one more. I really don't like how the camera doesn't display the current zoom setting on the LCD.

If you're looking for a budget camera that takes great pictures, and has all the features you could possibly desire (without too many gimmicks), then the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is absolutely worth a look. The only people that I'd caution are those who take a lot of movies or long exposures -- you might want to find a camera with a 30 fps frame rate and better low light noise performance (respectively) instead... ”

“ Much like the A570 IS, the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is an excellent compact digital camera. With an 8-megapixel imaging sensor, 4x optical image stabilized zoom lens and shooting modes that include auto, manual and everything in between, this is a camera that anyone will be able to use and enjoy. With all of the features, performance and quality from this camera it is an excellent choice and highly recommended with a street price of US$179 or less. ... ”

“ Canon has another winner on its hands—this camera will sell by the shipload. At less than $179 USD, the 8MP PowerShot A590IS takes the type of shots casual photographers need captured (landscapes, people and so on) and does the job well. Although there are a few flaws such as a limited high-end video mode and some loss in shadow detail, this digicam does what it’s expected to do with a minimum of fuss and bother. Other camera companies are going to have a tough time competing with this baby. ... ”
