“ The A720 IS comes from a long line of successful cameras and, while it is hardly the most exciting upgrade we've ever seen, it does nothing to detract from a popular and successful recipe. And this makes it quite hard not to damn the thing with faint praise because it's hard to say anything about the A720 IS beyond the fact that it's a really good little camera.

Finding fault with it is a pretty awkward task. It also has one of the most stupidly placed tripod mounts that we've ever encountered but that's hardly a fatal flaw and one that will be an inconvenience for only a tiny proportion of users. But beyond that we're struggling. Its weaknesses (ISO modes whose ambition outstrip their image quality and an optical viewfinder that wouldn't be out-of-place on something that fell out of a cereal packet), are present in its competitors too. And, poor though compact optical viewfinders tend to be, they're still handy to have in bright or very low light when the LCD is hard to see.... ”

“ Photo quality was very good in most respects. The A720 took well-exposed photos with saturated colors, pleasing sharpness, and lots of detail. Purple fringing was not a problem. The camera keeps noise under control until ISO 400 in good lighting, but you'll see noise and noise reduction artifacting start popping up a lot earlier in low light. Redeye is also a problem, though you can remove it easily in playback mode.

As you can see, there isn't much to complain about when discussing the PowerShot A720. The only thing I missed is a comment about the tiny memory card included with the camera. Otherwise, the PowerShot A720 IS is a great choice for those looking for a budget, mid-zoom camera with all the trimmings -- I highly recommend it.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot A720 IS is an ideal camera for anyone who wants a bit more creative control than most pocket compacts can provide, and would be an excellent choice for anyone who wants to learn more about photography. Build quality, design and performance are all first rate, image quality is superb and the range of features is hard to match at the price. Battery duration could be a problem, but the ready availability of AA batteries offsets this somewhat.... ”

“ The Canon A720 IS stands out for its usable ISO as high as 1,600 (for small prints, or larger with noise reduction software) and excellent image stabilization so useful you'll always want it active. Considering you get that for under $250, it's a bargain, too. Digital zoom was a bit of a disappointment on the 8.0-megapixel Canon A720 IS, but otherwise the DIGIC III image processor provided above average performance yielding some wonderfully natural shots in a variety of settings. The Canon A720 IS's Movie mode can deliver broadcast quality video in a 4:3 aspect ratio while Still mode a offers 16:9 wide screen option I find a lot of fun. Operation is straightforward once you learn Canon's hierarchy of controls, but I was delighted to see a programmable Print/Share button on the Canon A720 IS.

From the optical viewfinder to the manual modes to the variable power flash, whenever I looked for a feature a photographer would appreciate, I found it on the Canon A720 IS. There isn't a gaudy LCD (with no room for a viewfinder) or extravagant zoom range (with big compromises in optical quality) or any of the frills (frames, in-camera presentations) of many less capable digicams. But if you want a mid-size digicam with a fairly long zoom that can take pictures like a real camera, this is it; and it's an easy Dave's Pick.... ”

“ There is no denying that the Canon Powershot A720 IS is a capable camera and will cope with nearly every outcome that you may need it for.
The only thing that really annoyed me about the Canon Powershot A720 IS was the download time when out and about.

Should you find yourself in the market for a compact that is designed like a prosumer, fitted with all the stuff that a prosumer has, but without the build quality or price, then this camera has plenty of good features to keep you happy.... ”

“ With its 6x optical zoom with optical image stabilization, updated face detection system, and abundance of manual functions, the Canon PowerShot A720 IS makes a strong case for new point-and-shooters.

Like almost all Canon point-and-shoots released this year, the Canon A720 IS has fantastic color accuracy, and, as an added bonus, excellent white balance accuracy using either the auto or preset settings. The accurate colors coupled with the solid resolution performance make this camera a great value in terms of image quality. The image quality isn’t perfect, however, as photos will be plagued with noise at high ISO settings, as well as limited dynamic range.

Unlike other competitors, though, the PowerShot A720 IS lacks the sleek design of flat 3x optical zoom cameras in favor of a protruding right hand grip that allows users to comfortably shoot for extended amounts of time. The camera is also missing the range of built-in editing functions, characteristic of other point-and-shoots.

If users can sacrifice looks and editing controls, the A720 IS’s virtues, namely the long optically stabilized lens and excellent color reproduction, are too good to pass up. Overall, the Canon PowerShot A720 IS is worthy of its price and should be considered a strong contender.... ”

“ The Canon Powershot A720 IS provides excellent images and excellent features for an equally excellent price. Image quality is top notch as far as compact point and shoots go. The inclusion of a 6x optical zoom, with image stabilization, is a great selling point, especially for people buying their second or third digital camera who are looking for a bit more than the typical 3x optical zoom. With the exception of the flash cycle time, camera performance is good and battery life is good and even excellent if you use high-capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries. There are other cameras that will beat the A720 in particular situations, like low-light shots, but this Canon can handle a wider variety of shooting conditions, overall, than other cameras in its class. Bottom line, even with the 8 second flash cycle time, the Canon Powershot A720 IS is an excellent all-around compact digital camera and excellent value... ”

“ Combining beginner-friendly AUTO and Scene settings, along with the full Manual mode and everything in between, makes this a terrific consumer digicam. The 6x optical zoom and Image Stabilization add to its versatility, let alone the overall fun factor. It is perfect for the home or office as it is easy enough for anyone to pick up and start shooting. With a MSRP of US$230, this is an outstanding value for a digicam that offers power, functionality, and quality all wrapped up into one compact package.... ”
