“ With superb build quality, a huge range of features and options, fast performance and - at its best - outstanding image quality, the Canon PowerShot G9 is certainly one of the best compact cameras on the market, and a very good creative tool for the enthusiast photographer. However it does suffer from the usual limited dynamic range and noise problems of super-powerful compacts, and considering it is nearly the price of an entry-level DSLR, one has to ask if it's really worth the money.... ”

“ If you really loved the old rangefinder film cameras from 30 years ago, with their metal bodies, precision feel, and good heft, the Canon G9 is going to be your idea of a compact digital camera. It has the manual control you expect and the Raw format enthusiast photographers increasingly want to work with. But if you like the slimmest, most automatic camera on the market that you can take with you everywhere, the Canon G9 might not be your best choice in a digital camera.

Sure, I wish the Canon G9 were just a bit smaller to fit in a shirt pocket without strangling me. But at least the Canon G9's large body contains a lot of good stuff. With above-average performance, a 6x optical zoom, image stabilization, and that gorgeous 3.0-inch LCD, the Canon G9 is the G-series reborn. Though it's still lacking the swivel screen, I found the Canon G9's big LCD useful enough that I didn't miss it much. Though I'm one reviewer who will take the noise at ISO 1,600 and work with it later, I do wish ISO weren't stranded out on that dial, retro-cool as it is.

These are mere quibbles, when you come right down to it. I reached for the Canon G9 when I wanted to worry about the pictures not the camera, and it never disappointed me. I got some great shots of the Fall and the family and some nice lettersized prints to prove it.... ”

“ I should start by giving Canon a little credit for so quickly responding to at least some of the criticisms of the G7; the G9 may be a relatively minor upgrade but it does knock a few of the rough edges off its predecessor and - most importantly - brings RAW capture (and highly usable RAW capture at that) back to the G series. The new screen is nice too, and the handling performance tweaks might not be enough, but they do bring a noticeable improvement.

And everything we loved about the G7 is still here; the superb build, lovely retro styling, expansive feature set, comprehensive manual control and unusually wide range (for a compact) of expansion options. The build quality and sheer weight of the thing give a real feeling of 'quality' in the hand, and it has that certain something that makes everyone who sees it want to pick it up and use it. And - unusually for a compact camera - it positively encourages you to get out there and take some pictures.

But a camera that seduces you with its indulgent styling and solid build is only half the story; the G9 is a wonderful 'gadget' and a powerful photographic tool, but is it a great camera? The sad truth is that the one area where we'd really like to have seen Canon making significant changes - the image quality - hasn't really changed at all. Not that it's poor - anything but; it's just not outstanding (and I have to say, using the default settings and shooting JPEG, occasionally disappointing if you stray over ISO 100).... ”

“ Canon has produced yet another awesome "G" series Prosumer model. The G9 continues the traditions of this line, offering a slew of manual functions, great image quality, blazing fast performance, a durable exterior, and class leading specifications (12-megapixels, 6x optical zoom with OIS, Face Detection AF, etc.), not to mention plenty of automatic controls for novice users. The addition of the RAW mode is very appreciated, especially since I felt it tended to use a bit more color saturation than I would normally prefer. With a street price of US$499 or less, we feel it offers a good value for those who want all of the control over the exposure process of a dSLR, but don't want to carry around a bulkier camera and a bag of lenses. The Canon PowerShot G9 is a worthy adversary in the prosumer category (if not the top contender), and it's sure to be a very popular model for the 2007 holiday season.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot G9 is a very powerful compact which will greatly appeal to enthusiasts or anyone looking for a pocketable backup for a DSLR. It features a wide array of manual controls which unlike many compacts are sensibly implemented and on the whole, unrestricted. The quality lens offers a useful 6x range and sports both optical stabilisation and impressive macro facilities. On the top is a fully-featured hotshoe which supports Canon’s Speedlites (complete with in-camera control over the 580EX II) and even its wireless transmitter. And the icing on the cake is support for RAW recording.... ”

“ There were two key features missing on last year's PowerShot G7 that turned off both myself and the Canon G-series faithful: the lack of a rotating LCD, and no support for the RAW image format. On the new PowerShot G9, Canon has rectified the second issue, but I think there are still plenty of people holding out for a G-camera with that handy rotating LCD. The PowerShot G9 brings several new features with it, most notably a larger LCD display and RAW support. It offers a host of nice features, but it has more than its share of flaws. Still, for a full-featured fixed-lens camera it's pretty good -- as long as you don't let the ISO get too high.

The PowerShot G9 looks a whole lot like its predecessor, with the only noticeable changes being its larger LCD and different-colored lens ring. It's not a small camera by any means. In fact, it's sort of the antithesis of Canon's stylish and curvy Digital ELPHs. The G9 is square, heavy, and not what I'd call pocketable. The G9 is well built, with a rangefinder-style body made mostly of metal. While it doesn't have much of a grip, the camera is still easy to hold, even with one hand. My only ergonomic complaints are that the zoom controller and shutter release button are too small, and that you cannot swap memory cards while the camera is on a tripod.... ”

“ The Canon Powershot G9 is both a worthy upgrade to the previous G7 model and a real alternative or backup to an entry-level DSLR camera, thanks largely to the return of RAW mode. It offers the ultimate control over image quality for those prepared to spend the time refining their images post-capture, and a wealth of advanced features that will satisfy most photographers needs. At the same time, the less experienced shooter can choose Auto mode and JPEG and still get excellent results, with the camera ready to explore when you get more adventurous. The Canon Powershot G9 is the kind of camera that not only makes you feel like a better photographer, but helps you become one too, mixing both comprehensive and happily reliable hand-holding features with a plethora of real photographic controls that, along with build quality, at times exceeds that offered by many – if not most – budget DSLRs. This model handles well, and feels like its built to last more than six months – indeed it's one of the weightiest, most brick-like compacts out there for the amateur market. Yet you can still slot it comfortably into an inside coat pocket, meaning, unlike a DSLR, it's also a carry anywhere camera.

The new 3 inch, PureColor LCD screen is a great addition that almost makes it possible to ignore the small optical viewfinder, although it's reassuring to have that on standby for really bright conditions, or if you prefer composing a picture with the camera at eye-level. Less satisfactory is the new 12.1 megapixel sensor. Although this offers 4000 pixel wide/high images that can easily be printed up to A3 size and beyond, or to make severe crops, it comes at the notable cost of noisy images at ISO 400, and virtually unusable ISO 800 and 1600 modes. The excellent image stabilisation system does help to ensure that the G9 can handle most common shooting situations, but don't expect stellar results when using the camera handheld in very low-light. In all other respects image quality is excellent, so you may want to overlook the noise issue. So overall, and even more so than the previous G7 model, the Canon Powershot G9 is an excellent back-up compact for an SLR owner, and a great camera in its own right.... ”

“ Canon has re-introduced raw file capture to its top-of-the-range digicam, the PowerShot G9. This alone makes it a significant upgrade to the G7 model, although the G9 has slightly higher resolution (12.1 megapixels vs 10 megapixels) and a larger, 3.0-inch LCD screen. The viewfinder has been shrunk, however, to provide space for the LCD, which adds just over five grams to overall weight... ”
