“ Easily the greatest bargain among pocket cameras, the Canon SD1100 has it all: small size, sleek design, optical image stabilization, a good lens, face detection, custom modes, and a low price. Though it's an improvement over last year's incredibly popular SD1000, the Canon SD1100 retains the impressive image quality, despite a slight increase in resolution from 7.1 to 8.0 megapixels. The Canon SD1100 increased in thickness just a little, probably due to the addition of image stabilization, but it's still quite comfortable to hold, and it slips discretely into most pockets. High ISO performance was reasonably good, with ISO 1,600 still producing a decent 4x6-inch print; and ISO 80 and 100 maintained surprisingly good quality at 13x19 inches. Overall, the Canon SD1100 is an improvement to an already impressive camera, and well worthy of a Dave's Pick.... ”

“ The Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS can perhaps best be summed up as an undemanding snapper for the unpretentious imagemaker – and as such is largely beyond criticism, save for some fiddly controls inherent in a camera with a height and width (if not depth) equivalent to a credit card. The build quality is very impressive, as is speed of operation and overall ease of use. And the fact that you get a 32MB card bundled with the IXUS 80 IS out of the box so you get start snapping straight away will find favour with its non-enthusiast target market. The only real shame here is in the levels of noise apparent in the mid to high ISO range. Though most of its intended audience will doubtless be using the Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS for the occasional sunny holiday snap or activating the flash for party shots, and so that won't be an issue, it's an area that nevertheless detracts from the positive overall picture and knocks a star off its score. At the time of writing, as we've noted, Canon had announced a bigger brother to the 8 megapixel IXUS 80 IS in the 10 megapixel IXUS 90 IS, which adds a high ISO setting equivalent to ISO 3200 and a 3-inch screen, a review of which is to follow very soon.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH is a competent ultra-compact camera that is a worthy follow-up to its predecessor, the SD1000. It offers a sleek design, optical image stabilization, snappy performance, and good photo quality. And, with a street price of around $230, you can cash in that "stimulus package" check and have money leftover for a tank of gas. While it's not perfect, the SD1100's positives easily outweigh its negatives, and it's a camera I can recommend without hesitation.

The PowerShot SD1100 is an ultra-compact camera made almost entirely of metal. The camera is well put together, with the one exception being the "el cheapo" plastic door over the memory card and battery compartment. While last year's SD1000 had a bit of a "retro" look, Canon has gone back to a more familiar "perpetual curve" design on the SD1100. Along with the less boxy design, the camera is now available in five colors: silver, blue, pink, brown, and gold. The SD1100 has a standard-issue 3X optical zoom lens, with a focal range of 38 - 114 mm. Inside the lens is Canon's optical image stabilizer, which effectively reduces the risk of blurry photos (it can smooth out your movies as well). On the back of the camera, you'll find a 2.5" LCD display with 230,000 pixels. The screen has an anti-glare coating, which allows for a wide viewing angle and good outdoor visibility. The LCD is easy to see in low light, too, as it brightens automatically in those situations. The SD1100 also has an optical viewfinder. It's tiny, but in this day of LCD-only cameras, I'm glad to see it. ... ”

“ Canon has introduced yet another stylish and appealing ultra-compact model in their Digital ELPH line. The quality, performance and ease of use make it a great camera for the home or office, and the ultra-compact size and multiple color choices make it a fashionable accessory. With a street price of US$249 or less, this is a good camera for anyone who likes to keep an easy to use "pocket-rocket" handy at all times. ... ”

“ This is a camera designed to appeal more to the fashion conscious than the connoisseur, and as such it serves its purpose. It's well made and very attractive, but is at the lower end of the IXUS range in terms of specification, features and price. Image quality is passable but I sometimes feel manufacturers try to impress too much with the gimmicks rather than get the fundamentals right first. The IXUS 80 IS is a case in point.... ”

“ I liked the SD1100 IS Digital ELPH since it does what it’s supposed to do for a reasonable price. Is this the greatest camera to come down the pike? No, but as I said, it does the job. Point-and-shoot portrait pictures are good and outdoor shots are spot in typical Canon style. Optical image stabilization helps eliminate blur in most instances and let’s you shoot in available light. Focusing is fast and there’s barely any shutter lag (with the flash off, though). It does fall down with excess digital noise at high ISOs and the battery could use some extra oomph. And setting tweakers should pass this one by. That said I still have no problems telling friends—even those friends looking at this monitor—to buy Canon point-and-shoots like the SD1100 IS.... ”

“ The SD1100 is a 'typical' IXUS/SD in many respects. It is compact, well built and sports a reasonably attractive design. It offers good output quality in most situations - straight out of the cam - only requiring minimal user intervention. It is also typical in so far as you won't find any groundbreaking innovations on the spec sheet. As usual Canon has chosen the safe route by sticking to what they know best. If it is the extraordinary you are after, go and look somewhere else.

The SD1100's Image quality is good for a camera in this class but not outstanding. The results at base ISO are reasonably clean and detailed but images get visibly softer at the long end of the lens. It's also obvious that Canon, like most of its competitors, has not found the magic potion yet to get rid of the two evils that haunt small sensor cameras: limited dynamic range (clipped highlights) and excessive noise at high sensitivities. In high contrast scenes parts of your image will almost certainly blow out and noise and noise reduction are visible even at base ISO.

The former you can mitigate by carefully applying some negative exposure compensation and/or reduce contrast in the MyColors options. The latter you'll simply have to accept, there isn't anything you as a user can do about it.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS makes quite a fashion statement with its multiple color offerings and body that is so compact it could get lost in your pocket. This Digital Elph makes some common sacrifices that all compact cameras make: handling isn’t very comfortable, the buttons are generally small, and the components are crammed together so the flash can be easily covered by the fingers.

The Canon SD1100 is physically attractive, but its images aren’t always as beautiful. Images look good when taken in bright light with the ISO set low, but images taken with high ISO settings are noisy and can look somewhat unpleasant. They are hardly suitable even in low-resolution formats for blogs and e-mails – much less for prints that will sit in an album for years to come.

The $249 price tag is inexpensive for a trendy 8-megapixel Canon digital camera, let alone one that has an optical image stabilization system. But the image quality is the big trade-off here; in anything other than bright lighting, you get images that have a serious amount of noise. Whether the portability of the camera is an acceptable trade-off for this is up to you, but it does detract from the attractiveness of the camera. ... ”
