“ The Canon IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS is a small, light and very stylish ultra compact camera that will appeal to people who place a premium on looks, portability and ease of use at an affordable price. But its beauty is more than skin deep. It's a capable little compact that produces great quality photos with the minimum of fuss. Its automatic mode features scene recognition, ensuring that even tricky subjects like backlit portraits and night shots come out looking good.

Sure, the zoom range could be a little longer and some manual exposure controls might be appreciated by those who share a passion for advanced photography as they do for stylish gadgets. HD video would be nice too, or failing that, at least the ability to optically zoom during video recording. But those aren't features you'd realistically expect to see on a camera in this price bracket. For our money, Canon has got it right where it matters - style, portability, ease of use and great picture quality. The IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS is one of the best affordable compacts right now and comes Highly Recommended... ”

“ Small, very user-friendly and capable in most situations, the Canon SD1200 upholds the ELPH reputation for style and quality. With a 10-megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens, the PowerShot SD1200 IS gets high-resolution images with good quality. Its Smart Auto mode is trustworthy in its ability to assess most common shooting situations and gets better images than you would with a straight autoexposure mode. Plus, features like automatic Optical Image Stabilization and Face Detection help you get good images under more difficult circumstances without even thinking twice about it. Another plus is that the Canon SD1200 provides some manual controls when you want them, such as metering mode, white balance, and ISO. Performance is generally good, though some distortion on the lens at wide-angle makes its way into a few shots, and anti-noise processing affects detail at all ISOs. However, overall performance is quite good, with believable color and good image quality. In short, though most enthusiasts should take a look up the price range in the PowerShot line, the Canon SD1200 is a great pocket camera for most consumers looking for quality at a low price, and merits a Dave's Pick... ”

“ Most of the 2009 camera lineups start with a 10-megapixel compact with a 2.5-inch LCD and 3x optical zoom. The PowerShot SD1200 IS is that camera for Canon. It doesn't offer much more than the competition in terms of features, with the exception of a viewfinder, but it probably has the best photo quality of the bunch (though not by much). Then again, the competition is also selling their models for less. You'll have to decide which is more important... ”

“ If you’re looking for a camera you can take anywhere, which is easy to use and looks smart, then the Ixus 95 IS is a strong candidate. However, you can find better specified compacts for less, offering superior performance, although, admittedly, you’d be hard pressed to find a more compact model. Still, with that £219 price tag, the Ixus 95 IS faces some pretty stiff competition, which you should keep in mind before you flash the cash for this model... ”

“ This is a camera that fulfills my need for a small pocketable camera - and I mean shirt pocket or jeans - that takes good images, has quick performance, and is built to last. Let me tell you this camera is tiny and light weight. It’s has the same dimensions as a credit card and is under an inch thick. Wow! This is another gem in the continuing Canon ELPH series... ”

“ At a price of $230, this camera is definitely worth considering for all of the features it comes with. It is a reasonably priced point-and-shoot that gives the photographer plenty of options.

With a 12x combined zoom, Smart Auto mode, 10.0 megapixels and a sleek, small body, this camera packs much of the versatility of a larger camera into a phone-sized unit. It has its pros and cons, but on the whole I would endorse the purchase of this camera for the casual or beginning photographer... ”

“ Like its predecessor the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS can best be summed up as an undemanding snapper for the unpretentious photographer. Again the sturdiness of its build quality is very impressive, as is speed of operation, design, and overall ease of use. There's no media card bundled with the camera this time, but since SD or SDHC cards can now be found in your local supermarket it's hardly a deal breaker.

We can't even nit pick this time about the levels of noise apparent in the mid to high ISO range. The IXUS 95 IS acquits itself in this area better than many of its competitors and indeed appears improved on its forebear. Shame its colours are slightly drab when the camera is left on its default settings, but as we've noted, by switching to Program mode and selecting the 'Vivid' colour option, such grumbles are silenced.

In many others respects the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS seems almost a carbon copy of the earlier IXUS 80 IS, so if you can find a good deal on that earlier model, go for it. If on the other hand you're truly looking for the most portable compact around, can I recommend also the IXUS 100 IS for its inoffensive loveliness, HD movies and HDMI out connectivity at just £50 more. It's also a recent recipient of a Photography Blog Recommended award.... ”

“ The Canon Powershot SD1200 IS continues with the winning formula of Canon ultra-compact cameras with its sturdy metallic body, well-rounded feature set and good overall performance. There is not much not to like about the SD1200, although its image quality does not approach the famous Fuji F-series' high-ISO nor the F200 EXR's high dynamic-range, it produces images of good quality and performs admirably well in all areas except exposure with its tendency to over-expose in order to produce a bright image at the expense of highlight details... ”
