“ In summary, although the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS does not offer the absolute best in every category for its class, it does well enough in most of them. If you are looking for a middle-of-the-line compact digital camera that will produce photos with excellent quality, then you really cannot go wrong by picking this new Canon digital camera... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS is a good-looking, compact point-and-shoot camera capable of capturing quality images. Unfortunately, the frustrating Control Dial spoiled it for me. If you like the design, features and image quality of the SD790 IS, take a look at Canon’s other PowerShot SD cameras. They’ve proven themselves over the years with simple usability and excellent image quality compared to other point-and-shoots. But the poor Control Dial on the SD790 IS makes what might otherwise have been a nice little camera an exercise in frustration... ”

“ With a generous 10-megapixel sensor and a high-resolution, 3-inch LCD, the chiseled Canon SD790 IS ELPH is hard to ignore. Add Canon's Face Detection and Motion Detection technology, all handled by the company's premier DIGIC III image processor, and even what you don't see is impressive. Like all compact digicams it suffers from slightly noticeable corner softening and chromatic aberration at wide angle. But that's forgivable. We're less inclined to forgive the meager 3x zoom, particularly if you do a lot of landscape shooting. But when it comes to image quality, the Canon SD790 IS impressed me with its dynamic range and natural color capture. Small enough to take anywhere, you'll never want to be without it. ... ”

“ The images produced by the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS are generally quite good. Still, I ended up with fewer keepers than normal due to focus issues and noise concerns with the SD790's familiar 10 megapixel sensor.

Some will enjoy the SD790's nonstandard ergonomics, but the unusual control layout may detract from overall usability of this camera for many. Some of the buttons seem superfluous and the control dial spins far too easily. I have used the control dials for years on the Canon SLRs and DSLRs and prefer the sureness and purposefulness of them; unfortunately, the SD790's dial gives a much more disconnected feel that can make the camera hard to manage at times.

Overall, the SD790 is a logical upgrade in terms of resolution to Canon's Digital Elph line, and a great screen impresses. But with fairly conventional specs all around and a few rough edges, the SD790 doesn't always live up to expectations... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH is a well built, easy-to-use ultra-compact camera that produces very good quality photos. Add to that its large, easily visible 3-inch LCD display and optical image stabilization, and you've got a winner. Sure, the SD790 isn't perfect -- it has issues with corner blurriness, a slow charging flash, and the fact that it doesn't tell you the current zoom setting -- but despite those issues, the camera remains a great choice for those who want a small camera with a big LCD.

The PowerShot SD790's design harkens back to Digital ELPHs of old. While most of Canon's newer ELPHs seem to have more plastic than metal, the SD790 has the "metal brick" feel of the original models. The camera feels very solid, and even the door over the memory card / battery compartment is sturdy (though don't expect to open that when the camera is on a tripod). The camera's control layout is a mixed bag. The important controls are easy to reach, though I'm not a fan of the "flush" buttons on the back of the camera. The SD790's scroll wheel takes some getting used to, as well. The SD790's 3X lens is rather pedestrian, with a focal range of 35 - 105 mm (and why can't Canon show the current zoom setting on the LCD?). It does, however, offer optical image stabilization, which reduces the risk of blurry photos. On the back of the camera is a large and sharp 3-inch LCD display. The LCD has some of the best outdoor visibility you'll find these days (I'd say only Panasonic does it better), and it's easy to see in low light, too. As you might expect, there's no optical viewfinder on the PowerShot SD790.... ”

“ Does the world really need another point-and-shoot Digital IXUS? Probably not, but that's not to suggest the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS constitutes a less than worthy addition to the series. Its squarish, tank-like design is something of a throwback to the solid feel, boxy original models in the series at the turn of the millennium, which, although priced a little higher than competitors, felt worth the extra outlay; happily that same impression is the one delivered by the modern day Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS. For me, image noise could be better tackled and the OIS made yet more effective, meaning there are snapshot cameras out there delivering better images under a wider variety of conditions – the latest 10 megapixel Lumix models from Panasonic spring to mind. That said, the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS exudes slightly more class when it comes to overall build and design, and at the end of the day it feels that you really are getting what you're paying for – even if another £100 or so could snag you an entry-level DSLR with the same headline features yet bags more control. Still, it's that old adage of horses for courses and the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS shapes up as a veritable pocket rocket, albeit not quite firing on all cylinders. Its performance though will be more than simply good enough for most, with water resistant casings available for the more adventurous. So, a recommendation then, if not quite the full five stars for the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS is a powerful and easy to use camera wrapped up in an "ultra- compact" body. The combination of quality and performance is nicely complimented by the 10-megapixel imaging sensor and optical image stabilization. As with all Digital ELPH cameras, this camera is easy enough for anyone to use. With a MSRP of US$350, its a good deal for what comes in the box. ... ”

“ The IXUS 90 IS is a very impressive compact camera with a stunning screen, lightning fast auto-focus and a reasonably full feature set. The build quality is also first rate, and exactly what I've come to expect from the Canon IXUS range, while the design is aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing. On the down side, the 35mm wide angle setting of the zoom is slightly disappointing, especially when you consider that IXUS 850 IS, launched back in 2006 came equipped with a 28 - 105mm zoom.

Despite the IXUS 90 IS excelling in many areas, the high price point will place it out of the reach of many prospective buyers. And with the competition in the compact sector getting fiercer every day, there are plenty of alternatives for considerably less cash. That said, if you've got the money, and you can get on with the navigation wheel, then the IXUS 90 IS will make a great "carry everywhere" camera.... ”
