“ Canon's IXUS range of high-spec compacts continues to set the standard for the rest of the industry. The 960 IS has pretty much everything you need except a wide-angle lens. It is relatively expensive, but with superb design and bomb-proof build quality, exceptional performance and class-leading image quality you really do get what you pay for. The 960 IS is easily the best 12MP compact on the market, and a sound investment for anyone who can afford it.... ”

“ The SD950 IS offers an interesting mix of features that at times seem at odds with each other – a wonderfully compact and lightweight camera wielding a big 12.1 MP sensor matched with a somewhat pedestrian 36-133mm focal length lens with image stabilization, but no manual controls. Truth be told, Canon has improved this camera over its predecessor by the addition of image stabilization, as well as a higher resolution sensor with comparable noise performance. The lens won't get you close to distant subjects, but it does now cover the 85 to 135mm focal length range many 35mm film shooters favor for portrait work. Image and color quality remain first rate. Focus acquisition and shutter lag are reasonably quick, and flash performance is good, with normal recycle times of only a few seconds.

Outside of the big sensor, there may not be any particular category that the SD950 IS leads the pack in. Image stabilization and a 2.5-inch monitor, for example, are as common as fleas on a dog's back. It's when you add up the sum of its parts that the true worth of the 950 begins to shine through. This camera doesn't do anything poorly, and does a host of things quite well. That should be enough for most folks. ... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SD950 IS digital camera packs a lot of punch in a pocket-sized point-and-shoot. The 12-megapixel sensor is for real with 4000 x 3000 pixel images and great image quality. The excellent metering and image stabilized lens mean you can trust the SD950 IS to come through with great pictures in most circumstances. The camera does fall short for action photos, with noticeable shutter-lag and poor shot-to-shot time. And I wish Canon included a sports scene mode to help people get better photos of their kids playing soccer or the family dog chasing a Frisbee. My biggest problem with the camera is the wide end of the lens. The 35mm (35mm camera equivalent) wide end just doesn’t cut it. It’s ok when you have plenty of room. But when space is tight it’s frustrating.... ”

“ Featuring a 12.1 megapixel CCD, 3.7x optical zoom lens, and well-designed user interface, the PowerShot SD950 IS Digital ELPH has a compact body style that is well suited for travel. Exposure remains under automatic control, and its 11 pre-programmed Scene modes help with more tricky subjects. The Canon SD950 IS is a very responsive camera, with low shutter lag in daylight conditions, and excellent shot-to-shot speeds. It also sports very good battery life, a capable Movie mode, and excellent download speed. Finally, Canon makes a line of accessories including a slave flash, and even an underwater case for it as well, expanding your options beyond what you'd normally expect from a compact digital camera. The bright 2.5-inch color LCD monitor is excellent for framing and reviewing shots, and the overall design and layout of the SD950 is user-friendly and hassle-free. Printed output is astonishingly good, producing impressive 16x20-inch prints, and even ISO 400 shots are good at 11x14. If you're looking for a good, take-anywhere camera with great versatility and good color and tonality, the Canon SD950 deserves a close look. No question, the Canon PowerShot SD950 is a Dave's Pick.... ”

“ The SD950 continues in the tradition of the S100 that was started back in 2000, leading the way in the digicam market. A stylish and durable camera, with an outstanding 12.1 megapixel imaging sensor, 3.7x optical zoom and image stabilization, make this an incredibly versatile camera. Great performance and excellent image quality just add to this already outstanding package. This said, the price of US$450 is reasonable for this model. If the top performance from an ultra-compact is what you are looking for, then this is the camera for you. ... ”

“ The new flagship Canon Digital IXUS 960 IS is one of the first Canon compacts to feature a 12 megapixel sensor, helping the company to keep up with the megapixel race. Despite the slightly larger than normal 1/1.7” CCD sensor, this megapixel increase comes at a price, principally in the form of noisy images at the relatively slow ISO speed of 200. The inclusion of an excellent optical image stabilisation system does allow you to use slower ISO speeds than you normally would on a camera without anti-shake, but this doesn't totally compensate for the noise issue, making the Canon Digital IXUS 960 IS poorly suited to low-light shooting conditions. On the other hand, if you routinely make large posters out of your pictures or you like to aggressively crop them, you'll welcome the 4000 pixel wide/high images, but don't expect to see any benefit if you only print up to 8x10 inches in size. Otherwise images are colourful and sharp straight out of the camera, requiring little if any post processing which is a blessing for the point-and-shoot brigade.

Pick the IXUS 960 IS up for the first time and there is an undeniable sense of quality which exceeds most of the competition, but this only partly justifies the seriously high retail price. The LCD screen is clear enough to be able to compose images in sunshine without recourse to the alternative optical viewfinder. Indeed I quickly forgot the viewfinder was even there, so small and murky the view through it. ISO Auto Shift is a useful feature in theory but is seriously let down by the quality available at ISO 800, whilst beginners will love the Face Detection feature which provides well focused and exposed family pictures. For those who don't already own an IXUS but are seduced by its enticingly curvaceous lines, titanium body and sophisticated finish, the IXUS 960 IS is as good a place as any to get introduced to the family. We'd suggest looking beyond the headline-grabbing 12 megapixel resolution and opting for the much cheaper IXUS 860 IS, which has the added benefit of a 28mm wide-angle lens, larger LCD screen and most importantly less noisy images.... ”

“ Combining style with substance, the IXUS 950 performed extremely well in all parts of the test. Stylish, compact and easy to use, the camera provided good results throughout all tests. ISO results were excellent, as were performances in burst mode, and the Macro mode gave super sharp and detailed pictures from as close as 2cm. Features such as Image Stabilization, Advanced Digic III Processor and Face Detection all contribute to giving high quality results and make taking high quality photographs a doddle. Simple enough to use, even for newcomers to digital, the IXUS 950 is a good all rounder that comes highly recommended. ... ”
