“ If you are looking for a handy and, especially, a trendy design camera, you will soon spot the Canon IXUS 110 IS. The model stands out from the masses, which gives Canon a small lead over the competition. The quality is fine to excellent and will probably be appealing as a snapshot camera, preferably in good light circumstances. If you want to shoot in a more serious way, you'd better go for the PowerShot G10 or perhaps an (EOS) DSLR camera. The Canon IXUS 110 IS may not be striking, but still features various handy innovative functions to make photography as pleasant as can be. An excellent choice for the trendy or design-sensitive photographer who highly appreciates priority and ease... ”

“ The SD960 is a great choice for high-quality images in a tiny package.

I prefer the no-longer available and slightly bigger SD880 for its larger LCD and better handing, and will most likely prefer the even bigger and even better handing new S90, however the technical image quality of any of these is in the same league as the G9, G10 and G11, too. The differences are all in how well it handles, not technical quality within a class of camera.

For sports, kids and action, you need a real SLR like a Nikon D40 or Digital Rebel T1i.

The newer SD980 IS adds a wider lens (24mm vs, 28mm equivalent) but still has the smaller LCD of this SD960 IS. The newer SD980 also has a touch screen, whose utility I'm still waiting to test.

I may whine about the balky handling and tiny LCD of the SD960 IS, however I had no problems making great images with this as my only camera for over a week of travel 3,000 miles away from home, and you'll never hear me complain about its lighter weight!

You can't go wrong with Canon Powershots (their name for these little cameras). If you like this one, fantastic. If you want a different LCD or lens or whatever, they are all great... ”

“ The Canon IXUS 110 IS is probably destined to be an extremely popular camera. It offers fantastic build quality, an up-to-the-minute range of features, great handling and performance, and image quality matching a camera that costs nearly half again as much. There are a few cheaper alternatives, but none that are better... ”

“ With a wide-angle screen and a significantly simplified set of controls, the Canon 960 IS takes slim pocketability to new levels. It's not that the Canon 960 is so slim front to back, but the widescreen LCD makes the camera so much shorter than most of the competition. The Canon PowerShot SD960 is a good performer in a lot of categories. Image quality is pretty good at wide-angle and telephoto, with strong blurring in only one corner of the frame at each setting, and mild blurring in the others. Lens distortion is also quite low, and chromatic aberration, though moderately high and bright, really doesn't detract much from the Canon SD960's images. Color is quite good, as is exposure, though noise suppression is somewhat high at the mid-range ISOs. Shutter lag is very good, though shot-to-shot cycle times drag a bit. Despite the slower cycle times and some luminance noise at low ISO, the Canon SD960 handled our testing well enough to earn a Dave's Pick... ”

“ The 110 IS sacrifices quite a lot in order to accommodate its curious styling and additional features. To maintain a sleek exterior, functionality and ease of use has been reduced and instead relegated to menus and sub-menus, and while still in keeping with the Canon conventions, it's a little more confusing than the implementation on the 100 IS. Images aren't as great as we'd expect, but that doesn't mean they're not any good — you'll just have to do a bit more tweaking to get the best out of this camera... ”

“ The Canon IXUS 110 IS would be, to be fair, one to mark down as 'just another' point and shoot digital compact if it weren't for gimmicky features like its active rear display (flipping images on playback and advancing frames with a cursory flick of your wrist) plus the rather more useful inclusion of HDMI out port (if no actual lead in the box) and 1280x720 widescreen movies.

In creating a smooth, pebble like exterior finish this Canon has, for us, sacrificed some functionality - less physical controls means more time delving into on-screen menus and toolbars to find what you want. Therefore we only give the IXUS 110 IS a modest '3' for ease-of-use, which surely should have been first and foremost among its manufacturer's considerations. But, since most people in the market that the camera is aimed at buy on looks first and foremost, it shouldn't affect take up unduly.

At £349 though the Canon 110 IS feels expensive given its immediate rivals, and that, coupled with our issues with its operation, means that we can only give it an average score, all things considered. If you want a camera with a small form factor, cute looks and HD movies, we suggest you also seek out the even more compact IXUS 100 IS for further investigation... ”

“ We've been big fans of Canon's Digital ELPH line ever since we reviewed the S100 back in 2000. The SD960 continues on in its predecessor footsteps, offering the latest and greatest of Canon's legendary technologies, powerful features, speedy performance, excellent image quality, and loads of exposure options, all packed in a "Go Anywhere" frame. With a street price of US$329 or less, the PowerShot SD960 IS may be a bit more expensive than a couple of its competitors, however with the quality and features you are receiving we fell its well worth the extra cost... ”

“ So is the SD960 IS worth considering? With a street price of $330, a 12.1-megapixel sensor, and 4X optical zoom range all bundled in a compact and rugged form factor, this camera proved to be a capable point-and-shoot with plenty of features for the beginner or novice. If you don't want to lug a beast around and want a stylish camera, the SD960 is a great option.

Bottom line – this camera is a solid performer, and Canon has done well by their new line of PowerShot Digital ELPHs.... ”

“ The 12-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD960 IS belongs to Canon's motley crue of radically designed PowerShot compacts, including the PowerShot SD960 IS and PowerShot SD970 IS. The PowerShot SD960 IS is marketed as the “girly” version of the pack, thanks to its pastel color schemes and minimal controls, and we found plenty of advanced functionality under the hood. The camera also has one of the best LCDs in its class and rocks Canon's latest swanky menu system. We loved the touch-sensitive Control dial and actually didn't mind the serious drought of buttons. But most importantly, the PowerShot SD960 IS captured great images and 720P videos, and that’s really what matters at the end of the day, right? For most consumers, the camera's unconventional architecture and cute color schemes will be enough to summon the Visa from the Coach purse, but this camera will give you a lot more than you bargained for... ”

“ It's an interesting camera that they've released in terms of design and styling. It has the feel of the old Mju 2 from Olympus and they've stripped a lot of buttons and stuff off the back.

My only concern with this minimalist approach is that to find out what the navigation pad options are only found out by pressing the pad and an icon appears on screen. This isn't very quick and you could accidentally activate a mode without wanting to. It's a shame because I do like it and see it as a positive design.

I can see the appeal for users who like pretty cameras and younger photographers who enjoy funny little features such as Colour Accent... ”
