“ Photo quality was very good. The SX100 took well-exposed photos with vivid colors. Sharpness was right about where I like it -- not too soft, not too sharp. Noise isn't really a problem until the highest ISO settings, though noise reduction artifacting is visible a lot sooner. While you can see some evidence of NR at ISO 80 (mostly in the sky), it doesn't really degrade image quality until ISO 200 in low light and ISO 400 in good light. The ISO 800 and 1600 settings are best left alone, as there's quite a bit of detail loss and noise at those sensitivities. While purple fringing popped up here and there, it was kept under control in most situations. The SX100 does have a big problem with redeye, though there is a tool in playback mode that does an effective job of removing it.

With the PowerShot SX100 IS, Canon has produced another solid ultra zoom camera. It's not as impressive as its big brother, the PowerShot S5, but the SX100 costs quite a bit less. As semi-compact, entry-level ultra zooms go, the SX100 is a good one, and definitely worth a look.... ”

“ The SX100 IS is a bit of a wallflower, both in terms of design and specification. It is not ugly, but it certainly won't turn any heads either, it has a fairly good spec and feature set but nothing that we haven't seen somewhere else before. 'Solid' is probably the best way to describe the performance of this latest addition to the Canon Powershot range. The SX100 IS performs well in (almost) all areas but there is hardly anyhing exceptional about it.

Canon describes the SX100 IS as a camera for all members of the family in its press material and although this is some of the most overused marketing blurb you could possibly come across, there is some truth in it. The SX100 IS' well designed user interface makes it easy to find your way around the camera in a relatively short space of time. The long zoom range of the lens makes the SX100 IS a viable camera for a number of photographic applications, rather than a specialist tool that excels in one particular field. Relatively little distortion at its widest setting means the SX100 IS works well for landscape shots (although the lens could be a little wider) and at 360mm equivalent focal length at the long end of the zoom you can get up close to your kids on the soccer pitch (although the AF might struggle to keep up with them if they're fast runners).

There is no need to discuss image quality in too much detail. Again, it is very 'solid' without being exceptional. Under the usual circumstances (high contrast, brightness) there is some evidence of fringing and in lighting conditions other than bright sunlight noise reduction artefacts are visible in dark parts of the image even at base ISO. Users of the SX100 IS will also inevitably experience some of the highlight clipping that is typical for compact cameras with small sensors. None of these issues are deal-breakers though and it is very unlikely they will have any negative impact on your prints unless you print at sizes larger than A4.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SX100IS offers a great value in an affordable, feature-rich long zoom digital camera that's user friendly and still reasonably compact. With an 8.0-megapixel CCD image sensor, the Canon SX100 IS has great image quality so long as there's plenty of light. Things get a little rougher in poor lighting as you need to ratchet up the ISO sensitivity, but is no worse than most of the competition in this respect. The combination of full auto for beginners and and full manual for the more experienced photographer, plus a really powerful zoom lens that has minimal distortion and great sharpness, combine to let you get in touch with your creative side. The lens is not perfect, to be sure. We'd like to see better control of chromatic aberration and a little more on the wide angle end (even if that means sacrificing some telephoto performance), but overall it's easily the equal of long zoom lenses from competitors at this price point. While the PowerShot SX100IS' performance is not quite up to Canon's claims in all areas, it is still a fairly responsive camera, and its Burst mode is likely to be plenty for most users shopping at this price point. The Canon PowerShot SX100IS is a really enjoyable camera to use, and if you're looking for a long-zoom, fairly compact digital camera that lets you roll your sleeves up and tweak each photo to your satisfaction, it is definitely worthy of a place on your shortlist, and worthy of a Dave's Pick.... ”

“ So does the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS live up to its billing as a super zoom for all the family? OK, so it eats up batteries in a particularly greedy fashion and images can be noisy if you stray above ISO 400, but the build, the ease of use, the range of family-orientated features and that £299 price point – bound to drop to £250 with a little hunting around – should ensure it wins fans among those who want that extra zoom range, but don't need all the bells and whistles of an enthusiast-targeted super zoom along with it. There are a few niggles – namely the inability to adjust the zoom when in video mode, and that flimsy control dial that can slip between settings – but, even when you factor in the power hungriness, these aren't quite enough to have you anywhere close to dismissing the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS entirely. In fact overall the SX100 IS adds up to one of the more competent performers out there in this price bracket, boasting just the sort of shot-to-shot reliability you want when it's potentially being passed around everyone from little Agnes to Grandma. I was expecting a performance that was OK and was pleasantly surprised when the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS exceeded it. So that's another recommendation from the PhotographyBLOG crew for those wanting an all-singing, all-dancing big zoom compact, but without too many distracting specifications or a hefty price tag in tow. ... ”

“ For a relatively modest price the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS offers a good range of features to accommodate both novice and more experienced photographers. Its long zoom range gives it added versatility, and its fast performance, superb AF system and high image quality are capable of producing excellent results in a wide range of situations. Its only disadvantages are its bulk and weight, and its poor high-ISO noise reduction.... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SX100 IS makes a solid impression. As the first in Canon’s new line, the SX100 IS performs well with its optical image stabilization and updated face detection. Even more, Canon earns major innovation points for the Face Select Tool, which utilizes a unique rotary dial that puts a spin (literally) on an old function. While most manufacturers have by now included face detection on their newer cameras, Canon took the face-finding technology a step further by allowing users to select which face to focus and expose. If the sensitive rotary control dial were improved in the next SX camera, it could easily one of the leaders in the niche 10x point-and-shoot category.

In terms of image quality, the SX100 IS is an excellent lower-priced option than the Canon PowerShot SD-series, but not significantly better than lower-priced options in the PowerShot A-series. In other words, most PowerShot point-and-shoots released this year have very similar image quality, with the exception of the PowerShot TX1 hybrid and PowerShot G9. PowerShot image quality this year has been marked by excellent color accuracy and white balance performance, nice-looking videos, but also lots of noise and low dynamic range at high ISO speeds. The SX100 IS has the added bonus of performing very well in low light. This camera would be an obvious choice for a relatively inexpensive 10x zoom camera, if it weren’t for the Panasonic Lumix TZ3, which has even better image quality.

In general though, the PowerShot SX100 IS makes strides in this class of cameras. It’s a good option for consumers looking to upgrade from a 3x optical zoom. The Canon SX100 IS isn’t revolutionary, but, all features considered, its $299 price tag makes it an attractive option.... ”

“ Canon's PowerShot SX100 IS has many of the features of the popular S5 IS model but boasts a smaller, lighter body and significantly lower price tag. Boasting an 8-megapixel CCD imager and 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, the SX100 IS sports the latest DiG!C III image processor, which includes Face Detection technology plus support for ISO 1600 sensitivity. The 2.5-inch LCD monitor is fixed and has 172,000-pixel resolution and the camera has obviously been designed to provide performance and functionality at an economy price... ”
