“ Virtually identical to its year-old predecessor, the new Canon PowerShot SX120 doesn't represent a worthwhile upgrade for current SX110 owners, but it does remain an affordable and well-specified super-zoom that should appeal to both beginners and serious photographers alike.

The Canon PowerShot SX120 is slightly cheaper than the precious model and offers an extra megapixel, new Smart Auto mode, slightly faster processing thanks to DIGIC 4, and an improved face detection system. Pretty much everything else remains unchanged, with the same appealing combination of 10x zoom, large LCD, easy operation for the inexperienced, and manual modes for those looking for a pocketable alternative to a DSLR.

The negatives are that the Canon PowerShot SX120 eats up alkaline AAs in a couple of afternoons of shooting, the optical zoom still can't be used when filming video, there's no stereo sound or HD movie option in line with some recent competitors, the zoom mechanism is very audible, the wide-angle zoom setting is not really wide-angle by modern standards, and images can be noisy if you stray above ISO 400.

The Canon PowerShot SX120 is a cheap and more than cheerful super-zoom that delivers consistently good results, although slightly more expensive rivals do offer more bang for your buck... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SX120 IS builds on the success of its predecessor to deliver a decent range of features and a long zoom range in an affordable and fairly compact body that's well-styled and comfortable to use. With a range of exposure options from 'Easy' to full Manual, it will suit novices and experienced photographers alike.

If you're looking for a budget compact with a long zoom and accessible Manual controls, the SX120 IS represents excellent value for money. Existing SX110 IS owners won't feel a burning desire to upgrade, but it's a good buy for new price-conscious shoppers, particularly if you're a fan of Canon's functional exposure modes and easy menu system. Do compare closely with Sony's H20 though, and the models above if you have a little more to spend. The SX120 IS offers a big zoom at a very low price, but spending 50% extra will get you many more capabilities... ”

“ The SX120 IS is almost exactly the same camera as the SX110 IS that was released last year at the same time, minus the processing chip, resolution and features like advanced face detection. It has the same body size and design, the same construction, operation and controls, and the same focal length.

It also shares the same purple fringing problems, ISO performance, and maximum aperture ratings at wide angle and telephoto. So is it worth the upgrade for SX110 IS owners? That's a tough call. But if you don't currently own an SX110, and you're looking for a camera with great optics, excellent image quality, full manual control, and a reasonable price tag, then the SX120 IS is a no-brainer... ”

“ The SX120 offers a lot for the price: you get a 10x zoom with a decent wide angle, a big screen and an easy to use camera for about $220. But there are a few rough edges: the quality of the captured images is generally good, but does fall off somewhat at the longer end of the zoom range. The videos it captures also look good, but they are standard definition, while many other cameras capture high def video.

On the upside, the SX120 does provide a great amount of control for the user; it's one of the few point and shoot cameras at this price point that offers a full manual mode that really lets the photographer take control.

Overall the SX120 is a great little camera that provides good value for money, and would be a great pick for the photographer on a budget who wants to point and shoot and shoot creatively... ”

“ Overall we found the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS performed well in terms of image quality for its class. The 10 megapixel sensor offers good image quality from 80 to 200 ISO, with digital noise (grain like effect) becoming more noticeable from there on.

The PowerShot SX120 IS does deliver 'usable' image quality even at 800 ISO depending upon conditions, as seen in the shot of the two football players in our SX120 IS sample image gallery. The camera does experience approximately 0.6 sec shutter lag (the time from when you press the shutter button to the time the camera takes the picture), so a little forethought and anticipation is required to capture the exact movement in a situation like this.

If you are looking for a value priced long-range zoom camera, offering solid performance and a reasonable feature set, while delivering sharp and vibrant images under most conditions, we would definitely recommend the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS as a practical solution... ”

“ Canon's PowerShot SX120 IS is an affordable compact super-zoom that performs very well and features descent image quality. Noise and chromatic aberrations are something to watch out for with this camera. Featuring a 10-Megapixel imaging sensor, 10x optical zoom lens with IS, a shooting mode to suit anyone in the family or office and a powerful flash, it will have no problems handling any shooting situation that you throw at it. With a MSRP of US $249.99, it is worth considering if you are in the market for an affordable super-zoom as there are not many in this price range. You can also check out the Kodak EasyShare Z950 for $279.99... ”

“ Overall, we think the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS is a very good value camera for anyone who wants something small and compact, yet a camera capable of taking good shots in most scenarios. It provides good range with its 10x optical zoom, and it’s also performed well in night settings. We found a couple of issues with its build quality, but nontheless it has a reasonable price tag, it is easy to use and will suit anyone from an inexperienced user to a traveller who wants versatility in a small package... ”

“ The Canon PowerShot SX120 IS is a serviceable pocket megazoom camera. Its feature set, design, and performance are lagging behind models like Sony's H20, Panasonic's ZS1, and Kodak's Z915. And while Canon still tops them in photo quality, the difference is getting smaller and smaller and less significant if your prints aren't larger than 8x10 inches or just for viewing on a computer screen, TV, or digital photo frame... ”

“ Canon's PowerShot SX120 IS hits the market as the third in a series of affordable digicams with 10x optical zoom lenses and P, A, S and M shooting controls that began in 2007 with the release of the SX100 IS. Each update has involved a minor increase in sensor resolution plus some small tweaks to the body design and functionality. The on-going market position is unchanged; this camera is targeted at consumers who want a cheap, long-zoom camera... ”
