“ The Exilim EX-FC100 is a unique high-performance ultra-compact with HD video capability and some entertaining and potentially useful high-speed functions. The 30fps continuous mode could be useful for action photography, but the HS video is a bit of a novelty gimmick, especially on such an expensive camera... ”

“ The Casio Exilim FC100 is a very good compact camera offering a 9 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation, a 2.7" screen, and HD video recording. All this in any ordinary camera would be quite good, however, the Casio uses a 9 megapixel CMOS sensor that allows high speed shooting, much like the Ricoh CX1, however, by reducing the resolution to 6 megapixels the FC100 can shoot at an amazing 30fps! It also lets you record videos at 210, 420 or 1000fps, letting you see things that you wouldn't normally be able to see, although at a much lower resolution. If you want high speed photo shooting, or extremely high speed video then this is probably one the the cheapest cameras available with these features. The camera also provides good image quality, and is a fun camera to use. Recommended... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-FC100 is an utter speed demon of a camera, to the extent we're tempted to put chrome rims and a spoiler on it. The ability to capture still photographs at 30 frames per second, and slow-motion video at up to 1000 fps, in a far more affordable package than the previous Casio high speed models, is a powerful drawing card.

However, there are major drawbacks to some of these speedy tools. Shooting 30 fps photography lowers the resolution from it's usual nine megapixels down to six. The video at 1000 fps is so low-resolution (224x64) and artifacted as to be near useless, though it improves at slower speeds. Both high speed video and still photographs inherently require a large amount of light, and so are far better suited to sunny outdoors settings. This does make it ideal for shooting sports and wildlife, assuming the sun is shining.

The camera has other issues too. Its resolution performance was underwhelming, mostly due to low sharpness, and it doesn't have very good color accuracy (on the plus side, image noise was quite low). The controls aren't laid out well, given the size of the camera, and the menu system is frustrating. However, if you want the speed this camera can provide, at a relatively low price and slim form-factor, then you can probably look past those flaws... ”

“ If all you want is a decent compact with a 5x zoom, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives. But, if action photography is your bag, you'll be amazed by what can be achieved with the Casio Exilim EX-FC100's High-Speed Continuous Shutter technology. This is what you're paying for in the end, so be aware of that before you buy... ”

“ Casio has expanded their High-Speed Exilim series line with the addition of a new ultra-compact model. The EX-FC100 has apoted some very similar features from the EX-F1 and EX-FH20. Just slightly slower than the two cameras above, it has the ability to capture images at an astounding 30fps. Also carried over is the ability to record video at up to 1000fps, a 720p HD movie mode, slow motion view and a 9.1-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor (same imager that's found in the FH20). Other features you will find on this model are a 5x optical zoom lens, 2.7-inch LCD, Eye-Fi compatibility and CMOS image stabilization.

Bottom Line - one of several compact additions to Casio's Exilim "F" series, the EX-FC100 is an impressive ultra-compact digicam. As with the other High-Speed cameras in this series, there are several great shooting modes for capturing burst shots and slow-motion movies that are not found on other digicams. To go along with these creative features, the EX-FC100 provides you with speedy standard shooting performance, and very good image and HD video quality. With a MSRP of US $349.99, this camera is well worth the money, especially if you have kids in sports or you are a fan of slow motion or HD video... ”

“ I really like this camera and it's such a shame that the noise reduction isn't as good a version as it deserves. It's great to have all the uber-fast features of the Casio speed series in a compact as I think it brings this amazing technology to more people.

If this Casio can sort out the noise issues that the FC100 displays then it's certainly a compact I'd consider investing in. However, that said I still really like it and it still scores highly... ”

“ The Exilim EX-FC100 is a very capable point-and-shoot still camera, offering all of the features you’d expect in a compact, pocket-size camera. It’s the high-speed shooting features that really set this camera apart. Whether the camera is right for you depends on the type of shooting you do. For shooting sports and other fast-moving activities, these features will allow you to capture very specific moments, assuming you can get close enough to frame a good shot. (Bear in mind that the camera does not have a superlong zoom lens.)

The slow-motion video is lots of fun, and a great way to jazz up your movie projects, especially when shooting action. Be warned, though, that the camera does have some troublesome issues when shooting regular-speed video. For users who often shoot action, the EX-FC100 presents a great solution to difficult shooting issues... ”

“ At $349, Casio’s Exilim EX-FC100 is a solid high-end point-and-shoot but with a couple of drawbacks. Macro mode is a pain to access, and this camera is on the heavy side, even though it has a generous 5X zoom. What makes the EX-FC100 a gem is its fast speeds, slow-motion video, and HD shooting, a unique combination of features you’ll get only from Casio... ”

“ The Casio EX-FC100 is certainly one of the most innovative compact cameras of 2009, with an obvious focus on capturing fast-moving subjects and helping you not to miss that decisive moment. The ability to shoot 30 images in one second at the touch of a button is amazing for any camera, DSLR or compact, and if you can't choose the best shot, then the EX-FC100 can do that for you too. The only downsides are the reduction in resolution to 6 megapixels, which applies to all of this camera's high-speed still image functions, and despite that, the fact that memory cards quickly fill up if you regularly use the burst mode. On the video side, the EX-FC100 can record both 720p HD and super slow-motion movies, although both modes are somewhat hampered by huge file sizes, poor or no sound, the inability to optically zoom, and in the case of slow-motion, drastically reduced resolutions. Still, having all of this functionality in such a compact and well-built camera puts the Casio EX-FC100 at the head of the action pack.

Add in the 5x optical zoom lens (though sadly not a wide-angle one), decent LCD screen and intuitive design, and the Casio EX-FC100 seems to be one of the most well-appointed point-and-shoots on the market. Unfortunately the image quality doesn't quite match the feature list, with the EX-FC100 suffering from less than stellar images in low-light due to obvious noise appearing at ISO 200 and faster. Most of this camera's recent main rivals also suffer from this problem, but they typically offer 12 or more megapixels, rather than the 9 megapixels of the EX-FC100. The fastest shutter speed of 4 seconds also limits what you can do after dark, although the innovative High-Speed Night Scene mode partly makes up for this by allowing you to successfully hand-hold the camera in relatively low-light conditions.

$399.99 / £349.99 is a high price to pay for what is essentially a point and shoot compact with merely good image quality, so you really need to ask yourself if you will make full use of all those high-speed shooting options. If the answer is yes, then the Casio EX-FC100 is clearly one of the best cameras around for capturing all of the action... ”

“ The Exilim EX-FC100 is a unique camera, combining a well-made and nicely designed high-performance ultra-compact with HD video capability and some entertaining and potentially useful high-speed shooting and video recording functions. There's no doubt that the 30fps continuous mode could be useful for action photography, but the HS video is a bit of a novelty gimmick with resolution too low to be genuinely useful. It's also a very expensive camera... ”
