“ While the Exilim EX-FH20 is an attractively designed and well made camera with superb handling and outstanding performance. It has some almost unique features, and although the high-speed continuous shooting is great for action photography, the 1000fps video mode is little more than a novelty. Image noise is also a major problem... ”

“ Casio has really pulled ahead of the pack when it comes to high speed shooting with the FH20. This camera is like no other on the market (well, other than the Casio Exilim F1) and, in that regard, is a star.

Unfortunately, as a high speed camera and as an ultrazoom, the FH20's image quality – both still and video – isn't great. But if capturing action is your thing, then you should definitely check out the FH20.... ”

“ Visible noise at relatively low ISO, loss of detail caused by the noise reduction of the camera, visible chromatic aberration, a limited dynamic range and an average performing zoom lens reduce the image quality of the Casio EXILIM EX-FH20. This obviously influences the final conclusion of this camera review. The camera or perhaps the entire Hi-Speed concept is not yet sufficiently developed. Clearly the market is ready for the Hi-Speed functionality and there is a demand for it; we also acknowledge the application possibilities for this kind of function. However, a corporation can’t lose sight of the image quality, and this is unfortunately what happened with the Casio EXILIM FH-20. We will patiently await the next, hopefully improved generation of Casio's Hi-Speed Megazoom cameras!... ”

“ There are two final things to mention before I wrap up this review. Casio includes absolutely no photo editing software with the EX-FH20. The only thing you get is an uploader for YouTube, which isn't really necessary in the first place. Second, the documentation situation is a real mess. The only printed manual in the box is a short and very confusing basic manual. If you want more details, you'll have to load up the full manual in PDF format, and it's nothing to write home about, either.

In conclusion, the Exilim EX-FH20 does a great job at continuous shooting and recording movies, but it lags well behind the competition in many areas, with photo quality being the most important. If you need the ultra high speed modes that the FH20 offers, then check it out. Otherwise, I think you can do better, and for a few hundred dollars less... ”

“ the Casio Exilim EX-FH20 was a bit of a mixed bag. While it produces very pleasing images and offers some of the fastest burst speeds available, the EVF and AF system problems I encountered hinder my full recommendation of this camera. Plus, with an MSRP of US$599, this model is priced $150 to $200 more than its competition; like the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS which is US$399, Olympus SP-590 UZ at US$449 or Panasonic FZ28 at US$349. At that price, we are crossing over into entry-level dSLR territory, and for the performance and features you are getting from the FH20, it will have trouble competing... ”

“ What does this all mean for practical use? Not too much. Most of us use a camera for capturing the moments of life, not filming hummingbirds at close range. If you can bring the EX-FH20 along on a photo trip and use it with your primary camera, you can rely on it as a good burst mode camera or for shooting slo-mo video and high-def movies. Otherwise, we'd be hard-pressed to use it as a primary camera because the bracketing settings are hard to find. It's too expensive as a throw-away pocket digital, and doesn't take the most awe-inspiring casual shots, especially indoors... ”

“ In the high-speed still mode, after capturing the 40 screens, you need to wait until it saves all the images before it can capture another one, a process that takes about 10 seconds. So if you pick the wrong moment to shoot, you might miss the picture altogether. More important, in still mode, I thought the photos the camera took were good, but not great. In particular, I didn't find the image stabilization or low-light features to be quite as good as I've seen with other cameras in this price range. Still, that's not what makes the FH20 special.

Instead, you should choose the FH20 if you're looking for a camera that for photographing sports. The high-speed modes really let you capture images that you won't get with other cameras... ”

“ With its curved slopes and matt black finish recalling a baby DSLR, from the front Casio's EX-FH20 looks not only attractive but, for the consumer electronics brand, unusually sophisticated too. It is also to be commended for including less well-traveled features that set it apart from the competition – even if they don't go quite far enough to raise it above. It feels like the EX-FH20, though a bargain compared to the trail-blazing F1, could do with a further price drop of £50 to £100. As it stands, priced at £399 at the time of writing, there's almost no way a photo enthusiast is going to otherwise choose it over a premium brand like Canon. Photographically speaking, there's nothing that exceptional about the Casio. However if you're a YouTube junkie and as keen on video as you are shooting stills, and being able to capture slow motion footage as well as widescreen vistas floats your boat, then the Casio EXILIM Pro EX-FH20 is worth further investigation. Pity though that the optical zoom is disabled in video mode. The EX-FH20 isn't a bad camera by any means; in fact it's rather fun. But average images and performance means that some of its individual scores have to reflect that, even if overall it just scrapes a four for usability and daring to be different... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-FH20 essentially delivers a couple of absolutely amazing features, but can only muster mediocre image quality, and comes with a stiff price tag. Deciding whether you should purchase it or not boils down to how useful you'll find those features. The camera fared poorly in all our image quality tests except for white balance and was slow to focus. The construction feels low-quality and the camera chews through batteries. However, if you need 40 frames per second, this camera will give it to you in a significantly less expensive package than the F1. For wildlife and sports photography enthusiasts, the ability to take photos so quickly, and then chose the best one will allow you to get some amazing shots. If you're shooting out-doors in good light, you'll probably be able to get some good color in the pictures to. The video functionality, on the other hand, was more gimmicky than usefulthough undeniably lots of fun to play with... ”

“ With the exception of its immediate predecessor the F1, the Casio EX-FH20 is literally a camera like no other. It opens the dimension of time to photographic exploration to a degree never before accessible to amateurs (or to all but a precious few professionals, for that matter). For so many subjects (sports action, active children, wildlife, candid street photography, to name just a few), having a camera that lets you pick just the right 1/40 second slice of life will result in vastly more "keepers" than could be produced with any other photographic tool out there. And if you really need to get down to the nitty gritty of time and space, the FH20's video modes reaching well into the hundreds of frames/second can provide amazing images and insights.

To find this level of time-stopping ability in the same package as a very credible long-zoom digicam, all for under $600 at retail represents an extraordinary bargain. We think the FH20 will be a huge success for Casio, if they can only communicate its advantages through the US retail channel -- a channel that's shown itself to be almost incapable of communicating anything other than the concept that more megapixels are better. We certainly wish them well on this task, and hope that our meager efforts here will be of some assistance: There are tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of people out there who need this camera: Hopefully this review will help at least a few thousand of them find it!... ”
