“ If you need this type of high speed performance out of an ultra compact camera, the EX-FS10 is a great option, especially because you probably can find it for around $225, much less than the $299 MSRP. However, those beginning photographers seeking an easy-to-use camera probably will want to pass on this model... ”

“ Looked at as a whole, the Casio Exilim EX-FS10 is a technical marvel on the one hand, while on the other, it would seem to be an overpriced mediocre ultra compact.

Still image quality is not good enough; other makers' similar models can produce better still image quality at a more affordable price; the movie and high speed systems, while clever and neat to have, just might not be worth the premium price.

The Casio Exilim EX-FS10 is an attractive, well made and technologically advanced ultra compact but the prominence given to that high-speed technology seems to have been at the price of the final still image quality and its price point... ”

“ Rounding out Casio's Exilim "F" series is the ultra-compact EX-FS10. Featuring a 30fps burst mode, 1000fps high-speed video capture, 9.1-megapixel imaging sensor, 720p HD movie mode and a 2.5-inch LCD screen, this is one nicely equipped ultra-compact camera. It also includes an internal 3x optical zoom lens and Casio's Best Shot (BS) selection of scene modes, including YouTube movie mode.

Holding and operating this very thin camera can be done easily with just one hand by bracing it with two fingers in the front, just be careful not to block the flash. This will even allow you to search the cameras menus and playback images while keeping your other hand free. There are 4 buttons or switches that make the major features of the camera instantly accessible. On top of the camera are the Slow and 30fps buttons, the latter of which allows you to instantly put the camera into burst mode. On the back you will find a dedicated button for video recording and next to that is a switch to toggle between normal and high-speed video capture modes. As for the rest of the controls, they have the same layout as most other compact Exilim models.

Bottom Line - Casio's ultra-compact addition to the Exilim "F" series, the FS10 is an outstanding performer and is packed full of fun and useful features. It does however, lack a little in the image quality department, with softer images than we'd like to see. With a MSRP of US$349.99, you can get the same performance and better image quality with the Casio Exilim EX-FC100. The only major differences are the EX-FC100 is a little bigger and features a larger 5x optical zoom and 2.7-inch LCD... ”

“ The truth is that Casio has set themselves at the top of the high speed market and can't even be touched by the competition. The EX-FS10 has a remarkable technology behind it, much like the EX-F1, minus the hefty price tag. Although it does have its quirks and limitations, the high-speed movie modes are enough to draw in someone looking for this effect.

If you're just shooting casually, this camera will provide you with sufficient image quality and performance. But if you're looking to catch the action, the 30 fps mode is impressive and works great, allowing you to slow down the action and always get the shot. With the combination of slow-mo video, HD video and extremely fast burst rate for stills, this camera is for the photographer who needs all this in one body... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-FS20 is an interesting and technologically impressive camera with some almost unique abilities. It is well made, attractively designed and even handles reasonably well, but unless you have a pressing need for its high-speed abilities it is actually a fairly mediocre ultra-compact which is outclassed by cameras costing half as much... ”

“ The Casio EX-FS10 shares most of the key features of its bigger, more expensive brother, the EX-FC100 model, but it ultimately falls short in a couple of key areas. The battery life is much worse, recording just 125 shots and a couple of movies before needing to be recharged, so you'll need to budget for a spare. While the 3x folded optic lens allows the camera to be incredibly slim, it's also slow at either end of the rather limited zoom range - again the FC100 is a lot better in this regard. The position of the lens tight in the corner of the camera body also makes it easy for your left forefinger to inadvertently appear in your photos.

On a more positive note, the ability to shoot 30 images in one second at the touch of a button is amazing for any camera, DSLR or compact, and if you can't choose the best shot, then the EX-FS10 can do that for you too. The only downsides are the reduction in resolution to 6 megapixels, which applies to all of this camera's high-speed still image functions, and despite that, the fact that memory cards quickly fill up if you regularly use the burst mode. On the video side, the EX-FS10 can record both 720p HD and super slow-motion movies, although both modes are somewhat hampered by huge file sizes, poor or no sound, the inability to optically zoom, and in the case of slow-motion, drastically reduced resolutions. Still, having all of this functionality in such a compact and well-built camera puts the Casio EX-FS10 at the head of the action pack.

As with the FC100, the FS10's image quality doesn't quite match the feature list, suffering from less than stellar images in low-light due to obvious noise appearing at ISO 200 and faster. Most of this camera's recent main rivals also suffer from this problem, but they typically offer 12 or more megapixels, rather than the 9 megapixels of the EX-FS10. The fastest shutter speed of 4 seconds limits what you can do after dark, although the innovative High-Speed Night Scene mode partly makes up for this by allowing you to successfully hand-hold the camera in relatively low-light conditions. Anti-shake is only of the electronic software-based kind, which adversely affects image quality, and the 10cm macro mode is also disappointing on a 2009 camera.

$349.99 / £299.99 is a high price to pay for what is essentially a point and shoot compact with merely good image quality, so you really need to ask yourself if you will make full use of all those high-speed shooting options. If the answer is yes, then the Casio EX-FS10 is clearly one of the best cameras around for capturing all of the action. We'd still opt for the EX-FC100 though, which offers better battery life, a bigger LCD screen, mechanical image stabilisation and a closer macro mode, unless you really need the ultra-portable dimensions of the FS10... ”
