“ Going into this review, I didn't have terribly high hopes for the Casio Exilim EX-V8. How could Casio possibly stuff a 7X lens into a compact body without major compromises in return? After spending literally months with the camera, I came away with a favorable impression of the V8. Sure, it has its compromises (some of which are rather annoying), but Casio has done a very good job of putting a big lens into a small package. If you don't mind the anemic flash, mediocre high ISO performance, and reliance on its dock, then the Exilim EX-V8 is worth a look.

The Exilim EX-V8 is a compact camera made mostly of metal. It's not the thinnest camera out there, but it packs a lot more zoom than the competition. The camera's build quality is very good, with the important controls in the right places (though the zoom controller is a bit unconventional). I'm not a fan of the sliding lens cover (which doubles as the power switch), which makes it too easily to accidentally turn the camera on (like when you're putting it in a pocket or case). The V8 packs a whopping 7X zoom lens into a body that would normally house a 3X lens. The lens isn't terribly fast (F3.4 - F5.3), which is one of the tradeoffs that comes from having a 38 - 266 mm lens in a 1" thick body. The V8 also has sensor-shift image stabilization, which lets you take photos at slower shutter speeds than you could otherwise. Do note that you cannot use mechanical IS in movie mode. On the back of the camera is a sharp 2.5" LCD with good (but not great) outdoor and low light visibility. The EX-V8 lacks an optical viewfinder... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-V8 does offer something different to the majority of digital cameras with extra zoom in a compact body. Although the camera is capable of bright photos, picture quality is a bit patchy in places... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-V8 is an extraordinary ultra-compact digicam. With a full set of manual, and automatic controls, a slew of pre-programmed "Best Shot" modes, and the one of the best sets of video features, it is definitely one of the best quality and most powerful ultra compacts on the market at this time (10/2007). What makes it even more appealing is the MSRP of US$299. Combined this is one outstanding camera with a price to match... ”

“ The Casio Exilim EX-V8 is a capable ultracompact ultra-zoom camera, but mainly outdoors. The 7x optical zoom lens is nicely stabilized and performs well for being such a compact lens. The YouTube video mode worked well and the stereo sound capture was a nice feature. Image quality was very good outdoors. If you need to use flash indoors, results weren't as good, with the weak flash and red-eye showing up way too often. Battery life was very good and the camera operated very quickly overall. If you're in the market for a compact ultra-zoom, definitely give the EX-V8 a look... ”

“ Most every point-and-shoot is capable of recording movies. What Casio does is uniquely partner with an exciting, successful business – YouTube. The popular video-sharing website appeals to everyone from the Star Wars Kid to presidential candidates. For better or worse, Casio effectively matches its customers with an already recognizable brand name. Even more, the camera model name, itself, is already recognizable – who hasn’t heard of V8 drinks or V8 engines? The V8 is much easier to remember than the four-numbered product numbers that modify Casio’s earlier Z-series cameras (eg. the Casio Exilim EX-Z1080). It is genius on its part, making good on a strong coupling between the digital still camera world and the popularity of the website dedicated to personal video.

As many pros as there are with branding, there are as many cons with imaging performance. The Casio V8 gets props for matching a 7x zoom lens on portable body, but the camera produces weak focus during zoom. While having an extra assist light for movies is nice, the assist lamp is overpowering during stills. General image parameters prove weak, with average color and resolution, and too much noise.

As for its virtues, its mid-range zoom with image stabilization, face recognition system, 10 Movie modes, and 34 Scene modes make the V8 especially tempting for the 7x zoom market. Consumers should know, though, that most other current 7x optical zoom cameras are less expensive.

Kudos to Casio for getting to YouTube first, but the Exilim EX-V8's average image performance makes the $329.99 price tag a bit too high. For the money, there's a host of better performers out there... ”
