“ The Finepix F100fd isn’t going to win many awards for design or innovation, even though it packs some pretty useful technology. But then again, it sure isn’t a contender for turkey of the year. If you’re the sort of person, who essentially wants a point and shoot camera, but quite fancies having some extra features and advanced technology thrown in, then the Finepix F100fd won’t disappoint. It’s a friendly camera to use and will produce pleasing results in most situations... ”

“ Image Quality: Image quality is very good with good colour, good skin tones, good detail and generally low noise. Red eye in photos was well detected and removed and focussing in low light was not a problem. It has a good success rate at taking shake free photos due to the built in image stabilisation. There are a wide range of picture resolutions available and a few compression options, although there is no 16:9 mode. Auto white-balance and manual white balance are excellent. The camera gives good control over image quality, and allows some changes to the image afterwards, including cropping and preparing for website use. Purple fringing was also very low. (8.5/10)

Everything else (the camera as a whole): The camera is available in black and silver and has a strong body. The screen is large (2.7") and easy to read, and has additional options to help in bright sunlight and difficult angles. The camera feels well built and is reasonably comfortable to hold. It is simple to us and quick to access the most commonly used options. The layout of buttons and controls is good but could do with a scene position dial. The camera speed is good, with good switch on time, quick focusing, excellent shutter response, quick play back mode, quick menus, reasonable continuous shoot and good flash recharge. The camera has plenty of features to suit most people such as face detection focus, anti-shake, many scene modes, wide dynamic range, reasonable video mode, and good macro mode. It would be great if this camera had the option to select aperture or shutter speed manually – but other Fuji cameras with these options are available like the F60fd. (8.5/10)

Value for Money: The Fujifilm Finepix F100fd from around £160 is very good value for money. This is one of the cheapest cameras available with 12 megapixels and a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens. The closest competitors are the Canon A2000 IS (6x zoom) or the Ricoh R10 (7.1x wide angle zoom)... ”

“ The Fujifilm Finepix F100fd is very much like its predecessor, the F50fd, offering a number of significant improvements, but at the same time also taking a serious backwards step in one key area. This time around Fujifilm have improved the image quality, with performance at ISO 800 equalling ISO 400 on the previous F50fd. It's still not as good as the even older, 6-megapixel F31fd, about which we commented "this compact camera still has no rivals in terms of low-light performance", but it's very welcome none-the-less, and you do get double the resolution into the bargain. The F100fd also ups the ante by offering a 5x zoom lens, and a wide-angle 28mm one at that. This is an important step by Fujifilm as more and more compact cameras move away from 3x zooms, and it really makes the F100fd a versatile, take-anywhere camera. Unfortunately, Fujifilm have inexplicably decided to remove the one key feature that made the F-series cameras appealing to serious photographers, namely the A / S / M creative shooting modes that allowed you to control what the camera was doing. Canon also did this recently on their A-series - we hope this isn't a growing trend of manufacturers dumbing down their value-for-money ranges in order to persuade us to buy their DSLRs. The loss of this significant advantage means that the Fujifilm Finepix F100fd is now a fairly run-of the mill compact digital camera that's no longer the de facto pocket camera for the aspiring photographer. As an all-round package the Fujifilm Finepix F100fd still comes recommended, mainly thanks to the imporved image quality, but if creative control is your number one priority, then you'll need to look elsewhere.... ”

“ Though it doesn't have the high ISO abilities of earlier F-series models, the F100fd still produces very good quality photos for a compact camera. They're generally well-exposed, with pleasing (though not terribly saturated) color. Images are quite sharp across most of the frame, save for the edges, where there's often blurring. The camera keeps noise under control all the way through ISO 400, save for some mild smudging of fine details (a SuperCCD trait). The camera produces better quality photos at ISO 800 than the competition. Above that, things are disappointing: photos are quite noisy at ISO 1600, and a far cry from what the old F30 could produce. The highest ISO settings are far too noisy to be usable. On a more positive note, the camera keeps purple fringing well under control.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about the FinePix F100fd. It's a nice enough compact camera, with good photo quality and a host of user-friendly features (though it has its share of annoyances, too). At the same time, as someone who has used all of the models in the F-series, I'm disappointed with the direction Fuji has taken the line in recent years (in terms of low light shooting, battery life, etc). The FinePix F100fd earns a somewhat hesitant recommendation from me, though I'd take a close look at the competition.... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is capable in a variety of situations, typically getting good color and exposure even under harsh lighting conditions. Its performance is limited indoors, however, with poor low light results and limited flash range. Still, as an outdoor camera, the FinePix F100fd records some amazing resolution for such a small camera. I'd like to see the maximum shutter time in the Auto modes extended beyond the 1/4-second limit (the camera can go as long as 8 seconds in Night mode with Long Exposure mode enabled), but the availability of high ISOs and the Dynamic Range option definitely push the Fujifilm F100fd up a notch for enthusiasts wanting a little more from a consumer digital camera. That it can output ISO 400 shots at 13x19 inches makes the Fujifilm F100fd a unique pocket camera, regardless of its shutter speed limitations. Though we don't give it a full recommendation for consumers for its insufficient low light performance, we think it's a good enough option if you agree to use flash indoors. Those sharp corners are worth the effort of bringing a small tripod to avail yourself of the quarter-second shutter speed and that 12-megapixel resolution. With its 5x optical zoom lens, wide 28mm lens setting, 12-megapixel resolution, Face Detection, and host of well-apportioned shooting tools, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is a pretty good choice for the enthusiast, and a Dave's Pick in that category, with the qualifier that you should take care to use flash in low light.... ”

“ FujiFilm's FinePix F100fd is a very solid high-end compact camera. It combines good quality 12-megapixel images with a lot of cool features such as ISO 12,800, a wide angled 5x optical zoom lens and dynamic range options to make an enticing overall package.... ”

“ After reviewing the Panasonic FX35, I was sure I'd discovered the compact to get for my sister who wanted to take photos without any real involvement other than being there, but now comes the Fuji F100fd and the decision is up in the air. The Panasonic was a favorite because of its excellent lens, but the Fuji's got a lens that's pretty close. Decisions, decisions.

The F100fd lost the aperture and shutter priority controls of the F50fd, but gains the latest generation sensor and processor, as well as a wider and longer zoom lens. Color and image quality is first rate, and while the F100fd may perform a bit better with higher contrast images than earlier models, that's not the only reason to consider the Fuji: in fact, I'd rate it as one of the less compelling reasons. Good shutter performance, stabilization, that 28mm wide angle lens, still the best high ISO performance I've come across in current production point-and-shoots, and a simple, fairly intuitive layout and operation make this camera easy and friendly to use. Consider the wider dynamic range as icing on the cake.... ”

“ This camera probably won't many win plaudits for style, it looks quite bland, with little wow factor, but it produces the goods. It's well made, easy to operate and has a feature set that appeals to the photographic savvy. However it would be nice to have some more manual control such as aperture and shutter, and a histogram would also be nice. It's a little too high end for the average snap shooter and just a little to basic in operation for the enthusiast, despite having features that the enthusiast would love, especially the dynamic range function.... ”
