“ There are a few final things to mention before I wrap things up. The menu system on the F70EXR is difficult to navigate at times, and just feels dated. I found the mode dial on the camera to be a little sloppy, just like the one on the F200EXR -- it needs to be more "notchy", if you know what I mean. The door over the battery/memory card slot could really use a lock, and you won't be able to access it when the camera is on a tripod. Finally, in the bundle department, the included Mac software is poor (thank goodness for iPhoto) and the full manual is only available in digital format on an included CD-ROM disc.

If you're looking for a compact ultra zoom camera that excels at low light shooting, then the FinePix F70EXR should definitely fit the bill. It's not the most feature-packed camera in its class, but it delivers better high ISO shots than almost anything else out there (save for a digital SLR, of course). While there's definitely some room for improvement (mostly in terms of features and usability, rather than image quality), the F70EXR is a camera well worth your consideration... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is a stunningly versatile camera, a pocket-sized superzoom that can take superb pictures in any lighting conditions, and is better in low light than anything else in its class. It is well made, handles well, is easy to use, and even offers some creative manual settings. In a market crowded with near-identical long-zoom compacts the F70 stands out as something a bit special... ”

“ I really liked the F70EXR and I had lots of fun shooting with it. We are right in the middle of our fall color peak here in the Ohio Valley and I shot the digital equivalent of dozens of rolls of film trying to capture that once-a-year riot of autumn/harvest hues. The F70EXR did a good job and never let me down (although when the battery icon says Low Battery, it isn't kidding) but in the final analysis this camera just misses greatness.

Almost anyone who buys the F70EXR will like it - the price is right, it is amazingly flexible/tweakable, it produces superb images with bright colors, wide dynamic range, low noise levels, and it is easy to use. So what's the problem with the F70EXR? This camera really could have put Fuji on the map. Add more flexibility in selecting image resolution, add a small EVF, and enable RAW file capture and the F70EXR could have been a baby G11 - with more flexibility and more natural colors... ”

“ The Fuji FinePix F70EXR is an outstanding compact digicam, loaded with exciting new features and shooting modes. The newly designed 10-Megapixel Super CCD EXR imaging sensor captures excellent, high quality images, while the new image processor allows the camera to combine images on the fly to improve image quality. With several "Auto" shooting modes, including EXR Auto, anyone can pick up this camera and capture fantastic images. With a MSRP of US $279.95, this is an outstanding new compact digicam that is suitable for anyone looking for a powerful pocket-sized camera... ”

“ More than most of its ilk, the F70EXR suggests itself as an ideal travel companion best suited to spur of the moment snaps. That said the broad focal range and EXR and film simulation modes do provide a wealth of creative possibilities, ably allowing the photographer to take in everything from landscapes to candid close ups. With the F70EXR suggesting excellent value even at its top UK recommended price of £260, the ultimate winner here is the consumer... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR was a little unexpected, so soon after the F200EXR, it's thinner, yet has an impressive 10x optical zoom lens! As a compact camera it's impressive that so much can be packed into a camera the same size as most other cameras only featuring a 3x optical zoom lens! Whilst the EXR sensor may not be as good as previous Fuji cameras for low noise, it does provide much improved dynamic range, especially when you would normally lose detail in the sky. The menu system has been improved and it's nice to see manual controls, and image stabilisation in such a small camera. Image quality is very good, with low noise, when compared to other digital cameras and the option to capture a wide dynamic range is a very welcome feature, however purple fringing seems to be an unwanted side effect of having so much zoom available. Battery life was lower than I had hoped for. Overall the camera works very well and produces good images in a number of situations, and is Highly Recommended... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR improves on most of the core functionality of the F200EXR camera at a much more affordable price-point, although it's not all good news - obvious purple-fringing and an effective resolution of just 5 megapixels in most of the EXR modes detract from the overall image quality.

The major difference between the F70EXR and the F200EXR is the former's versatile 10x zoom lens. Offering a 27-270mm focal range in such a compact body is a real attraction of this camera, more than making up for the smaller LCD screen and the slightly reduced megapixel count. It also opens up a new market for Fujifilm, with the F70EXR competing directly with other travel-zoom cameras like the popular Panasonic TZ series, Casio EX-H10, Canon SX200 IS and the Samsung WB500. It offers a completely different approach to all of its competitors, with the ability to set the aperture and shutter speed (although slightly limited) in particular marking it out.

All of our previous lavish praise about Fujifilm's EXR mode applies equally to the F70EXR - it is as effective in practice as it is revolutionary in principle. The D-Range Priority (DR) mode in particular is literally a real eye-opener, recording much greater dynamic range and preserving more detail in the shadows and highlights than either the F70EXR's own high-resolution mode, or any other compact camera that we've reviewed.

The EXR - High ISO & Low Noise mode is admittedly less successful, producing slightly less noisy images at each equivalent setting than Resolution Priority mode, but this is tempered somewhat by the latter mode's excellent results from ISO 100-800, a much more versatile and usable range than most compacts offer. In essence the Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR takes both high-resolution photos with relatively little noise at the ISO speeds that you'll use most often, plus the added bonus of smaller 5 megapixel images with dynamic range to die for. Even if you can't decide between the different modes, the camera does a great job of picking the right one for almost every situation that you'll encounter.

The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR produces very good out-of-the-camera JPEG images with low noise and amazing dynamic range at a frankly astonishing price. We've seen the F70EXR advertised for less than £200 / $250, which is fantastic value for such a versatile camera - it's definitely worth snapping one up now... ”

“ It's a mixed bag of performance from the FinePix F70 EXR giving lots of detail and lovely colours but then it's let down with mid to high ISO levels.

I like the design and materials used for the casing and I think squeezing a 10x optical zoom into such a thin camera is a feat in itself.

If you're after a thin camera with plenty of pull in the zoom area, that also looks good then this is the camera for you. In terms of innovative fetaures, it appears to have more to offer than others in the same price bracket... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is a well-designed, compact superzoom, and the EXR sensor technology is spectacularly successful, even though the resolution penalty is disappointing. But it's all spoilt by some truly horrible purple-blue fringing. It doesn't appear in every shot, but it's frequent enough to drive you mad in the end... ”

“ Buy this camera if:
- You're looking for a pocketable long-zoom digicam that is good value for money.
- You take a lot of photographs in bright conditions (beach and/or snow) and need the ability to record highlight details in subjects.
- You'd prefer a camera with useful automated functions.

Don't buy this camera if:
- You require high performance levels in dim lighting, particularly for long exposures.
- You want to shoot widescreen or high-definition video.
- You want to shoot raw files. (The FinePix F70EXR is JPEG only.)... ”
