“ All in all, were impressed with the Finepix F200EXR. The EXR sensor is a step forward in camera technology and really does help improve image quality, especially in terms of dynamic range. We were disappointed by the lack of RAW, HD movies and more comprehensive manual aperture control - and some of the camera’s operating quirks can take a little getting used to. But these don’t detract from the fact that the Finepix F200EXR offers the more adventurous compact user some handy features to deliver fine results... ”

“ The Fuji FinePix S200 EXR is an innovative new camera featuring a 12-Megapixel, redesigned Super CCD EXR imaging sensor, EXR image processor, 14.3x optical zoom lens and several new and creative shooting modes that really make it stand out. The camera's only major drawback is the lack of its ability to capture 12-Megapixel images in its specially created shooting modes (6-Megapixel max.), which are the most appealing features on this camera in my opinion. With excellent image quality and good performance, the S200 EXR holds it own with the other cameras in this class, despite the lower resolution in some modes. With a MSRP of US $599.95, this is just one of many full-featured, super zoom cameras available in this price range. You might also want to look into the Nikon CoolPix P90, Canon PowerShot SX1 IS or the Olympus SP-590 UZ... ”

“ Seasoned shutterbugs will definitely appreciate the S200EXR for its dSLR-like controls and great picture quality, though its bulk and design may put off beginners. It took us a while to get used to the confusing menu interface, which we hope Fujifilm will correct in the next version of this camera. But all in, we recommend the FinePix to users who want a dSLR-like experience without the hassle of having to change lenses... ”

“ The FinePix S200EXR builds on the successful design of the previous S100FS with the logical addition of Fujifilm's exciting EXR technology, although we miss the tiltable LCD screen and slightly wider-angle lens of its predecessor.

The S200EXR is one of the best bridge-style cameras that we've reviewed, with the manual zoom and focus rings almost replicating a true DSLR experience. If you want the handling of a DSLR but can't stomach the expense of buying extra lenses or the bulk of a comparable system, then the S200EXR is almost the perfect match. It's certainly not the most portable super-zoom around, but that just adds to the general feeling of excellent build quality and well-thought-out design. As with the virtually identical S100FS, the design and layout can't really be faulted, save for that slightly stiff and tricky to turn control for switching between metering modes at the rear, and the larger but less flexible LCD display. Important improvements from the previous model include extended battery life, much faster processing times particularly for RAW images, and the ability to shoot RAW and JPEGs at the same time, although the lack of HD movies is a disappointment.

All of our previous lavish praise about Fujifilm's EXR mode applies equally to the S200EXR - it is as effective in practice as it is revolutionary in principle. The D-Range Priority (DR) mode in particular is literally a real eye-opener, recording much greater dynamic range and preserving more detail in the shadows and highlights than either the S200EXR's own high-resolution mode, or any other compact camera that we've reviewed. The EXR - High ISO & Low Noise mode is admittedly less successful, producing slightly less noisy images at each equivalent setting than Resolution Priority mode, but this is tempered somewhat by the latter mode's excellent results from ISO 100-800, a much more versatile and usable range than most compacts offer. In essence the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR takes both high-resolution photos with relatively little noise at the ISO speeds that you'll use most often, plus the added bonus of smaller 6 megapixel images with dynamic range to die for. Even if you can't decide between the different modes, the camera does a great job of picking the right one for almost every situation that you'll encounter.

In summary the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR brings the EXR success story to a new audience, offering a compelling combination of excellent image quality and handling at a more affordable price than before... ”

“ For the low angle images of the Bugatti, red & white flowers and plants using fill-flash, while the screen was easily visible, I felt as though I was craning my neck which I wouldn't have to do with a pivoting type. I love the sharpness of the images and I think for general viewing of images, noise levels up to ISO800 are acceptable.

I like what the EXR sensor can do and I also like the new pro-focus modes for portrait and landscapes. I think Fujifilm have shown a lot of spirit recently in the releases of their cameras with the EXR sensor and new 3D technology.

Now they need to keep moving while the spotlight is on them to release more ground breaking technology and they could well become an even bigger contender in the market.

I found it just as easy to use as all other Fuji cameras although the lack of the FinePix button confused me slightly. I'm also surprised to see a film bracketing option still so easily accessible because I wonder how many really use this feature?

I can't argue the image quality, it's very good and I think in the right hands, it'll produce sterling images. At the current price, it's a bit steep compared to other cameras on the market but bear in mind that it's innovative technology and there's a lot more features on it. If you're looking for a camera that can reproduce images that remind you of the heady days of film, then this is the camera to get... ”

“ So does the Fujifilm S200EXR offer pretty much all that a DSLR does, whilst saving the need to swap lenses or invest in additional optics? No, but it gets a fair degree of the way there, the combination of Super CCD EXR sensor and bolted-on Fujinon branded lens delivering an impressive degree of sharpness under most conditions.

That said, as we usually find with Fujifilm cameras with the camera left on its default settings, colours can look a tad wishy-washy, particularly on overcast days. Therefore we welcomed the added punch provided by selecting the Velvia film mode, which for us often delivered results closer to those seen by the eye.

So, while results straight out of the camera at times benefit from further tweaks in the image-editing package of your choice, the Fujifilm’s intended audience of photo enthusiasts who’ll want to get hands-on shouldn’t be dissuaded from purchase – even if the suggested retail price still smarts... ”

“ The FinePix S200EXR costs around $530 at legit online outlets, putting it in the range of DSLR kits such as the Nikon D60 and Sony alpha DSLR–A230. However, the supplied lenses of that pair are basically 3x zooms, a fraction of the 14.3x wide-angle Fujifilm digicam. It’s a huge difference, and a key selling point for the S200EXR. The FinePix also has many DSLR features, including fast response and many tweaks for those who’d like to make them. The Super CCD EXR chip is a good one, but isn’t nearly as large as the APS-C sized sensors found in DSLRs, which accounts for the noise issues. Now, if the S200EXR were around $100 cheaper, we’d be cheering. But it’s not, and that’s why it won’t get an Editor’s Choice designation. Still, this is solid digicam with a wide focal range that delivers good images in the proper light. It’s worth checking out, especially if you don’t want to drop a bundle on interchangeable lenses... ”

“ Buy this camera if:
- You're looking for an ultra-zoom digicam that can capture raw files as well as JPEGs and RAW+JPEG pairs.
- You take a lot of photographs in bright conditions (beach and/or snow) and need the ability to record highlight details in subjects.
- You're prepared to forgo access to aperture and shutter speed adjustments to achieve dynamic range control.
- You want plenty of adjustable controls and image stabilisation.
- You'd enjoy taking very close ‘macro' shots.

Don't buy this camera if:
- You want a pocketable camera. (The FinePix S200EXR is DSLR sized.)
- You require high performance levels in dim lighting, particularly for long exposures.
- You want to shoot widescreen or high-definition video.
- You want to shoot fast-moving action. (The AF system isn't up to it.)... ”

“ When Fuji USA announced the S200EXR, they referred to the camera as a "bridge" unit offering a long zoom and excellent image quality without the bulk associated with the DSLR and its interchangeable lenses. They then went on to say users of the S200 would find their results "equal or superior to" DSLRs.

The S200EXR is an excellent camera and I would have to say the best ultrazoom overall that I've tested. Image quality is very good and no one in the class has better ISO performance. The camera offers a full range of manual and automatic shooting modes, and a host of user established settings to manipulate images in just about any conceivable way. Shutter lag is minimal. AF performance is on a par with the class competition.

As good as the S200EXR is, it still falls a bit short of many DSLR performance standards, particularly in the ISO noise arena. But as an ultrazoom that packs a modest wide angle to long telephoto capability in a package sized like an entry level DSLR with a short zoom lens, this Fuji is pretty hard to beat... ”
