“ The Finepix S8100 is a good all round super zoom camera. It does not have quite the same number of advanced features that some super zoom cameras offer. This is reflected in the price and you should find this camera a bit cheaper than the top of the range models from Canon, Sony and Panasonic... ”

“ As with the model it replaces, the S8100fd really does hit just about all of the right notes. Limitations of and problems with this camera show themselves to be minor as a rule: in terms of basic performance, the S8100fd is a solid package that's capable of quite a lot.

So what's left to wish for in a possible forthcoming S8200fd? A bigger sensor would really make a difference here, bringing the S8100fd's merely acceptable noise performance back up to the level of some of Fuji's more hallowed offerings and helping with the camera's slightly compressed dynamic range as well. More than anything else, these two hurdles separate the image quality and use experience of the FinePix from that of an entry-level DSLR.

This twofold concern about the imager aside, there's very little else not to like about the Fuji, and for this price the camera offers easily portable photographic power in spades. Even with strong competition from several other makers, refinements to the basic FinePix formula help keep the S8100fd right at the top of our list of current ultrazooms.... ”

“ The Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd sets itself up as a jack-of-all-trades device for a very reasonable price. On that claim it very nearly succeeds – though it's not perfect. White balance is variable, there's some softness at maximum wide-angle and maximum telephoto zoom settings – though neither ruins the shot – and it's really not worth straying above ISO 800 despite the fact that up to ISO 6400 looks good on paper. However, the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd does offer some interesting and useful hand holding features that make it easy enough – almost – for your mother to use, whilst throwing a few enthusiast pleasing, or at least intriguing, gimmicks into the mix. Coming to this camera straight after I'd been playing with the S100FS showed that its more expensive bigger brother is in a different class – although, since it's roughly twice the price, that's to be expected. The usefulness of having a whopping 18x optical zoom at your disposal shouldn't be underestimated however, and for the price the solidly built S8100fd, though it's not the prettiest camera around, literally feels like pretty good value at £299. On that note the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd comes recommended. There may be better performing bridge models or super zooms out there, but not many in the S8100fd's class.... ”

“ It's fair to say this camera is designed for the user moving up from compacts and wants more creative control but doesn't want too much fuss. The manual controls will allow just that and the large zoom in the compact body ensures you have more diversity at your fingertips without lugging a load of gear around.

It's still a bit basic compared to what some other cameras offer but the user friendliness of the camera is something that Fuji have excelled at for years and the S8100fd doesn't disappoint.

It's unusual to harp on about face detection now it's pretty much a standard feature on compact cameras but I suppose they need a marketing angle. And that's the problem with this camera: It has no outstanding features to set it apart from the rest. ... ”

“ There's not much to recommend the Finepix S8100fd. As a replacement for a DSLR, it offers a lightweight and compact alternative, without the added expense of the price of lenses to match the focal range offered. However I dislike the EVF on this camera intensely, and the handling in manual shooting modes is fiddly at best. Image quality is hit-or-miss, with horrible high ISO images and some aggressive sharpening. At lower ISOs images are better, but I find the majority of images too digital looking, lacking the finesse of some other models.... ”

“ At this price point the feel the dial quality could have been better and the F button is in a stupid place, but that’s not a deterrent to buying the camera. It is something of a hybrid, providing at one end some technical options and at the other, options for your eBay gallery. We do like the range of options presented by the S8100fd but the controls lose it marks.

Image quality on the whole is ok and certainly this is a super zoom in a compact form giving you a wide range of options from the one camera.... ”
