“ Priced at just £80 the Kodak M893 IS stands out among other very cheap digital cameras because of its mechanical image stabilisation, but in most other respects you get what you pay for. Overall build quality and design are of a rather low standard, and while start-up and single-shot speeds are adequate, other aspects of the performance are quite poor, especially autofocus and low light capability. Poor image quality and serious noise problems are the final nails in the coffin. When you can get much better cameras for only £20-30 more, why spend £80 on something you won't enjoy using?

“ Recently, modern digital compacts have been utilising the ISO rating to give an effect of image stabilisation. The Kodak doesn't use that or it would have adjusted it for the stabilisation test.

The EasyShare M893 IS is by no means a cutting edge camera. There are few features that you won't have seen on all other cameras out there. The price, size and overall colour rendition makes it a decent camera to go for. Just don't rely on the camera to give a decent picture without flash in the dark because you'll be sorely disappointed.... ”

“ At around £110 the M893 isn’t bad value for money. You get a highly portable camera with a fair sprinkling of features - although not too much on the manual side - and a reasonable performance, with a few caveats. The M893 is not bad, but it will hardly get your pulse racing when you use it. ... ”

“ Sporting an 8.1-megapixel sensor, the M893 IS's photos are suitable for small and medium prints for the most part, if you can put up with a few issues. The worst of these is the colour balance. This model has limited white balance presets (there is no cloudy option for example) and the automatic mode struggles in indoor conditions.

While the Kodak EasyShare M893 IS carries a relatively low price tag, it can be slow at times while the image quality leaves a little to be desired at times.... ”

“ The Kodak EasyShare M893 IS provides nice features within a tidy, pocketable design but image noise and sluggish performance don’t do it any favours.

If you are after a reasonable snapper and you’ll print images at modest sizes you’ll be happy, but don’t buy this camera if it is 30 x 40-inch prints you’ll be wanting on a regular basis, as it might just leaving feeling disappointed. ... ”
