“ The 10-megapixel Kodak EasyShare Z1085 IS offers up a reasonably price-to-feature ratio, produces good, though occasionally overexposed, photos at ISO 200 and below, and offers uncomplicated operation. But while the 5x optical zoom is nice to have, performance is merely average for its class... ”

“ The Kodak EasyShare Z1085 is an inexpensive camera that offers a 5X zoom, optical image stabilization, and an easy-to-use interface, all in a fairly compact body. It also offers a high definition movie mode, which is impressive given the price of the camera. Unfortunately, the Z1085 has a host of flaws, including heavy noise reduction and redeye in photos, poor low light focusing, and below average battery life. The negatives end up outweighing the positives on the Z1085, so I think you're probably better off looking at another camera.

The Z1085 IS straddles the line between compact and midsize. It's not going to fit in your jeans pocket (at least, not easily), but it's easy to carry around with its wrist strap, or in a small camera bag. It's made mostly of plastic, with a little metal here and there, and feels pretty solid considering its price tag. The only real weak points are the plastic tripod mount and a mode dial which feels cheap. The camera is easy to just pick up and use, with buttons logically labeled (though they're on the small side). The Z1085 features a 5X optical zoom lens, with a focal range of 35 - 175 mm. Inside the lens is a somewhat noisy, but still effective optical image stabilization system, which helps reduce the risk of a blurry photo. The camera's flash is quite powerful, though its proximity to the lens makes the Z1085 a redeye machine. On the back of the camera is a standard-issue 2.5" LCD display, with average outdoor visibility. In low light, the screen brightens automatically, so your subject is still visible. There's no optical viewfinder on the EasyShare 1085 IS.

While it has several manual controls, the EasyShare Z1085 is mostly geared toward the point-and-shoot crowd. The feature that illustrates that best is called Smart Capture, which is the auto shooting mode on the camera. It'll automatically select a scene mode for you (and it does this fairly well), look for any faces in the frame, and brighten the shadows -- all on its own. There's also a panorama mode that will help you line up the photos side-by-side, which are instantly stitched into a single image. If you're confused about any of the menu options, a help screen is available. One of the hallmark features of Kodak's cameras is their EasyShare system, which allows you to tag photos for printing and e-mailing by pressing the Share button... ”

“ Kodak's EasyShare Z1085 is a decent but not outstanding advanced compact camera. It has some nifty features, but the images aren't quite up to scratch and it can get slow when the small buffer fills up... ”

“ As a concept, the Z1085 is interesting. Smart Capture and Perfect Touch aside, the camera isn't loaded down with the scores of soft features that have become commonplace in this class of devices, making the Kodak look a little underspeced on paper. As a photographic tool, however, this streamlining is a welcomed change, making the Z1085 easy to navigate and easy to use. Beyond this, everything on the Z1085 feels intentional – this isn't a cobbled together budget cam, but a generally well thought out device.

The newest EasyShare does a lot of things right. What unquestionably hurts it most is the fact that the few compromises that were made seem to directly impact what serious shooters look to first – image quality. All in all, this camera still deserves to be taken seriously, and if you like the truly excellent color reproduction that the Z1085 is capable of, its prospects look better and better. Heavy-handed sharpening and too much visible noise reduction across the board are the big hurdles, but if you can come to terms with these issues the EasyShare Z1085 IS brings a surprising helping of good stuff to the table... ”

“ The 10 megapixels don’t necessarily deliver a better photograph and the likelihood is that images taken will be used for standard display or online sharing, rather than producing full sized prints, which begs the question of why you’d want to go this high?

Overall we can’t help feeling a bit disappointed with the package delivered. It feels as though the numbers have been increased to offer people 10 megapixels and HD video but without rounding off the package. Yes, price needs to be considered, but with so many options on the market, this just isn’t a model we’d want to go for.

The lack of a chargeable power pack or even a memory card in the box is disappointing, so consider this when comparing prices... ”

“ With its relatively low price and 10-megapixel resolution the EasyShare Z1085 may look like a bargain, but as usual you get what you pay for. Build quality and design are reasonably good, the image stabilisation system works well and the camera is certainly easy to use, but it has a limited range of features and its overall performance leaves a lot to be desired. Image quality too could be a lot better... ”

“ No camera is without its errors, but the Kodak EasyShare Z1085 IS has a bloody good bash at being an excellent entry level compact - and is successful for the most part. It's got easy to use menus, an abundance of modes (including manual), a good zoom range, HD options and a decent image stabilisation sets all for 150 quid.

Fundamentally the only reason to look for a different compact at the price would be if you require a decent super-macro mode or a wider lens. The lack of rechargeable battery is understandable given the quality of the camera at the price, but it's hard not to think that if Kodak popped a rechargeable battery in the box this compact would entirely dominate the competition.

Bottom line is that the Kodak EasyShare Z1085 IS doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. Although the market at this level is saturated with hundreds of other compacts fighting for space, many of them come with feature-sets that are much more talk than substance. In the case of the Z1085 you get a decent, useable compact that does exactly what it says on the box - it even throws a bit of fun into the works, so a highly recommended compact all in all... ”
