“ Fun as these features are, you should probably take a pass on the Nikon Coolpix S230 based on little more than its utterly disappointing image quality. If you're looking for a much better camera in the same price range, the $270 Canon PowerShot A1000 IS is faster and offers terrific image quality... ”

“ Did the S230 deliver the basic image quality and fun-factor we were looking for? With a few reservations, I'd say it did. In good light, it captured some nice images. Colors are slightly saturated, but not to an extreme.

When the sun goes down, though image quality declines and the flash becomes a necessity. Aside from that, the 3.0 inch display brought some flair to an otherwise basic point-and-shoot... ”

“ It's a rare occasion to find a few prodigious faults in a Nikon, but this is one of them, so grab onto your Fendi bags and strut in the other direction. The Nikon Coolpix S230 is a fashion cam, so we weren't expecting anything groundbreaking as far as image performance was concerned, but the lack of overall image quality was substantial, in bright and low light. We've seen better cell phone images for criminy's sake. The Coolpix S230 also skimps on shooting features and throws most of its loot into Scene modes and novelty modes like Draw, the B movie version of Microsoft Paint. We like the touch-screen LCD, but $230 is not worth putting up with the rest of the Coolpix S230's insufficiencies. Consumers will be drawn to the swanky color options and touch-screen LCD like moths to a flame, but we're here to snuff the wick... ”

“ Nikon's S230 is a 10-Megapixel ultra-compact with a feature never before seen on a Style series camera, a 3-inch, 230,000 pixel LCD-touch screen. This size of the screen has eliminated all but two of the buttons on the back of the camera, and is responsible for all of the controls and navigation except for the shutter release and zoom control. Also featured on this camera is a Nikkor 3x optical zoom lens, Expeed image processor, Auto Scene Selector and Electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization.

The 4-way VR image stabilization is made up of several features that assist in reducing the amount of camera shake and motion blur seen in images. Nikon's electronic VR image stabilization and the motion detection adjust the ISO, up to ISO 2000, along with shutter speeds compensating for camera movement. The Best Shot Selector (BSS) takes multiple pictures (up to 10) when pressing the shutter release and saves the sharpest one.

What really makes the Nikon Coolpix S230 stand out is the large 3-inch touch LCD screen on the back. Complimenting the screen is the new Expeed image processor, auto scene select mode, and Nikon's smart portrait system. With a MSRP of US$229.95, this is a very stylish and easy to use ultra-compact camera. If you like the camera but can live without the touch LCD screen, check out the very similar Coolpix S220 for just US$150... ”

“ The Nikon CoolPix S230 is attractively designed, and it is certainly well made, but the trendy touch-screen interface can’t hide the fact that this is actually a very average camera. It suffers from slow performance, a very limited range of features including lacklustre zoom range and surprisingly poor lens quality, especially considering its relatively high price... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S230 is a decent, good-looking, ultra-compact point-and-shoot camera that happens to have the convenience of an intuitive touchscreen interface. If you're very critical of photo quality or need something very fast, this probably isn't the camera for you. But, if you're looking for a camera to keep with you at all times for snapshots, the S230 is a worthy contender... ”
