“ While our test shots were a little disappointing, the compact and well-designed Nikon Coolpix S510 was an immediate hit with me. I packed it along to three trade shows where it caught the action with ease, whether it was a dimly lit ballroom, a close-up of a small LCD or just a quick portrait. There was nothing it couldn't handle.

The Nikon S510's menu system is particularly noteworthy, enjoying the same well-organized and easy-to-read menus of other recent Coolpix cameras. The Help system was also a treat, particularly valuable for understanding some of the more sophisticated options on the Nikon S510 like Vibration Reduction and High ISO shooting.

Printed results weren't as good as we expect from an 8-megapixel camera, unfortunately, so though we can't give the Nikon S510 a Dave's Pick, we can say it's an easy to use, well-designed little pocket camera, great for snapshots that you don't plan to print bigger than 8x10 inches.... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S510 makes a rather unexciting entrance into an already dense market of similar cameras with 3x optical zoom lenses and small portable bodies. The Coolpix S510 has some noteworthy qualities, including optical image stabilization and an innovative rotary dial for easy menu navigation and playback. In general, though, the camera has a bland feature set.

The S510's image performance isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great, either. While the Coolpix point-and-shoot has accurate white balance, a quick startup time, and low noise levels at low ISO speeds, it suffers from extremely high noise levels and poor dynamic range at higher ISO speeds, poor low light performance, and disappointing resolution. Simply put, the Nikon Coolpix S510 does not have much to set it apart from the slew of similar point-and-shoots available on the market. If you’ll settle for a mediocre camera, consider the S510. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.... ”

“ Overall, the S510 marks a small step up in terms of performance, image quality, resolution and processing but it is also a step down in terms of user control but there’s an ace in the hole that I’ve not mentioned yet. And is its price. At £199.99, it is £50 cheaper than the introductory price of the S500 and makes it a very competitive camera indeed.

Brilliant build and pricing, big fat dollops of image quality and great features but with a few demerits in terms of user control, the Nikon Coolpix S510 is nevertheless well worth the money for anyone in the game for a well made high resolution compact digital camera.... ”

“ General screen readability was good in indoor lighting and average outdoors, where the wide viewing angle provided little real advantage. Good menu design, with a clear, legible typeface, made the LCD usable for changing camera settings in bright outdoor conditions. Playback quality was good enough to confirm exposure accuracy in indoor lighting – but not good enough in bright conditions... ”

“ We suspect most people will stick on one mode and use this camera as a point 'n' shoot, something the Nikon S510 excels at. If you can cope with the dinky-wee buttons and dials on the back and never want to delve into manual control, it's a great go-anywhere camera, and it is what the best-dressed handbag will be wearing this Christmas. ... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S510 is a decent little compact for everyday shooting and will satisfy those happy snappers who just need a camera for going out and looking good with. The flash range is great and coupled with the metal body, high ISO capability and image stabiliser suggests it is geared up for going out with.... ”
