“ Nikon's CoolPix S52c is a good option if Wi-Fi connectivity sounds useful for you. However, it is extremely slow at times, which becomes frustrating in some shooting scenarios.... ”

“ It's beautiful. It's faithful. But it's crippled. The lovely design, among the most striking of all digicams, with WiFi that only talks to Nikon's my Picturetown server, only marginally updates the S50c that preceded it. Take the WiFi issue away (as on the S51) and what do you have? A camera that can't hold a highlight in sunshine and has a less-than-responsive Shutter button.

On the plus side, the Nikon S51c has a VR lens, D-Lighting, and In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, all automatically activated by Face Priority autofocus in Portrait mode. The scroll wheel is a pleasure to use, as is Nikon's menu system. The large LCD flatters your images (particularly macro shots) and ISO 1,600 performance is among the best I've seen.

The Nikon S50c was a very disappointing revision of one of the most attractive digicam designs ever and the S51c only modestly improves upon it with a larger sensor and slight price decrease.... ”

“ The S51c looks very neat,
But its performance was a bust.
It seems this release is incomplete;
Future improvements are a must.

Resolution is poor.
The colors aren’t true.
Starting up is a chore.
The noise levels grew.

Bad pics from this camera abound;
Cheap components are partly to blame.
The only good quality to be found
Is the big LCD – what a shame!

The $299 price is a temptation
But the poor-quality images are more than a few.
The slow Wi-Fi causes aggravation.
In the end, the Coolpix S51c won’t please you. ... ”

“ While there aren’t many serious concerns with the S51c, it’s hard to say that it offers significant improvements – in terms of image and build quality, usability, or style – over the S50/S50c. Obviously, one of the big selling points here from a tech perspective is WiFi capability, but given the limitations of the system, Nikon still hasn’t created a device that will have broad usability and appeal on this front. If the S51c appeals to you, the standard S51 (sans WiFi) or even the S50 may be better choices. The bottom line, then, is that with lots of serious competitors in the compact market, it’s hard to strongly recommend the S51c.... ”

“ It looks nice, and it produces good results. The Wi-Fi connectivity relies on either an open access spot, or being provided with the encryption key, which does limit where it's going to be used. There's not much point in using it at home. The LCD screen is large and provides a good viewing platform, though it doesn't update that quickly if moving the camera. The controls are all on the small side, and while there are some decent photographic features, a camera like this is one for the point and shoot market. Here the operation could have been simpler, but it's not exactly liquid-fuel driven, vertical propulsion science is it.

There's noise at ISO100 and while it gets worse throughout the ISO range, it doesn't go mad unlike some compacts. It's only at ISO1600 that detail is obliterated and the colours shift. Image quality in general tends to be quite good, with sharpness in landscape images and detail in portraits. It's easy to get a good result on an automatic scene mode.

Most cameras in this kind of bracket have some kind of USP and in the case of the S51c it marries good looks with Wi-Fi, a portrait mode that brings in face detection, and offers optical image stabilisation as well. The handling isn't the best but the results are good and that, combined with the stylish appeal, make the S51c worthy of your consideration.... ”
