“ The S500 lacks some features I enjoyed using on the higher spec S600 such as the 3cm macro and wide angle lens. However at £50 less, it's priced accordingly to its bigger brother and its own capability.

It's a camera designed to flatter you and to make sure you look good while you're socialising with friends and family. Frankly this is the only time you'll really use the S550.

This is a camera that won't help you out when the light gets tough but will do it all for you instead. If that's your cup of tea then take a look at the Coolpix S550.... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S550 is an effective, pocket sized digital camera. It takes bright, colourful photos. I would like to have seen greater sharpness in my scenic test shots, but aside from that I have no real complaints. The Coolpix S550 also scores well for ease of use.... ”

“ The CoolPix S550 is a likeable little camera, very simple to operate and producing good results in most normal situations. It is solidly made and sensibly designed, and has very good handling despite its small size. The 5x zoom range gives it greater versatility than typical pocket compacts, and the electronic vibration reduction helps to cope with the longer telephoto end. Overall performance is a bit slow by current standards, and final picture quality has a few problems, but on the whole it acquits itself reasonably well. The only question is how will it measures up to its recent competitors.... ”
