“ Armed with 10 megapixels, a 5X zoom lens with optical image stabilization and a large 3.5 inch touchscreen, the Nikon Coolpix S60 is set to compete with the plenty of ultra-compact cameras in the market, creeping closer to its direct rival, the Sony T900 in terms of feature set.

The Nikon Coolpix S60 does several things right – such as the great touchscreen interface, decent feature set, plenty of scene modes with auto scene selection and the big bunch of retouch features in playback. Unfortunately, there are some negative points as well, such as the low resolution LCD, disappointing battery life and the lack of manual controls.

Image quality, however, was disappointing due to high noise levels (noise starts to become visible at ISO 100), color fringing and some image softness. Noise starts to get really bad at ISO 200 and pictures look very muddy at ISO 400.

The Nikon Coolpix S60 has a decent feature set and well implemented user interface; but the camera is letdown by its image quality (high noise levels and slightly soft results) and crummy battery life. It COULD have been an overall fantastic touchscreen camera, but unfortunately, it is not. Well, at least you now know what Nikon’s touchscreen interface looks like… perhaps it’s worth waiting till September when the Coolpix S70 (another touchscreen camera) comes out to see if that camera produces better images... ”

“ Nikon have certainly succeeded in making the Nikon Coolpix S60 stand out from the point-and-shoot digicam crowd, with a distinctive look and feel that extends to its almost completely touchscreen operation. Ultimately, though, this is also the most frustrating aspect of the camera. It initially feels liberating, if also a little bewildering, to be able to focus, zoom, scroll and select using nothing more than your forefinger or the more accurate supplied stylus. After a while, though, you'll start to grow weary of having to press the screen six times just to tweak the exposure compensation, or accidentally hitting the wrong icon, or waiting for the sluggish interface to catch up with your thought process. Comparisons to Apples' iPhone are obvious, but the Nikon Coolpix S60 is certainly not an iPhone in camera clothing, lacking its finesse, speed and overall intuitiveness.

Image quality is fine if you take pictures in well-lit situations, with largely accurate colours and white-balance, hardly any signs of unwanted colour fringing, plus effective built-in flash and vibration reduction systems. Stray into more dimly-lit environments, like your local pub, however, and the Nikon S60 exhibits obvious noise and softening of detail at ISO 400 and faster, rather negating the ability to freely pick from the range of ISO speeds on offer. The rather poor macro mode, limited shutter-speed range and inability to change the in-camera sharpening level are also frustrating. Beginners will love the plethora of hand-holding technologies on offer, with the Scene Auto Selector especially noteworthy, but if image quality is top of your hit-list, the S60 will only disappoint.

Thankfully this appraisal doesn't apply to the camera as a complete package. The Nikon Coolpix S60 is still a fun camera to use that produces good results in the majority of places that its target audience will use it. If you don't expect too much from it, then the Coolpix S60 is a stylish, if rather expensive, beginner's camera with a twist... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S60 will appeal to those looking for a stylish and easy to use ultra compact digital camera that features a touch panel LCD. There is currently a wow-factor associated with touch screens and the S60 has it... ”

“ As an ultra-compact digital camera, the Nikon Coolpix S60 lives in the category with the most models. Luckily, this model does several things to distinguish itself. To start, its 3.5" LCD is the largest which can fit in an ultra-compact. Add a non-protruding slightly wide 5X optical zoom lens with stabilization and the S60 shows itself as a unique offering. The cost of this uniqueness is a touch-screen interface which can frustrate users trying to use the camera beyond pointing and shooting.

Overall image quality and speed is average with some good points like color, sharpness and shutter-lag. Not so good points include high noise and low details from ISO 400 up, pronounced optical distortion and relatively slow auto-focus on average. Battery life, probably due to such a large and bright LCD, is very low, something to keep in mind.

Zoom and camera size can be extremely important for many, more so than megapixels and LCD size. Those people will appreciate the S60's ultra-compact size and combined 5X optical zoom. There are only a few such cameras, including the excellent Fuji Finepix F100fd with its 5X wide-angle lens and its stellar performance in low-light. For even more optical zoom, the Pentax Z10 and Olympus Stylus 1010 both offer more narrow angle 7X optical zoom lenses... ”

“ Don't get me wrong: The snazzy Coolpix S60 isn't a horrible camera; it just falls short of the competition on all counts. The big touch screen is fun, but basic menu navigation and camera operations are much simpler on the also attractive, but less expensive touch-screen Sony Cyber-shot T77 ($300). Also, both the Sony and Nikon's own Coolpix S610c pump out better-looking images. And if you're looking for high-def video capture, you're out of luck with the S60... ”

“ For the casual user, Nikon's Coolpix S60 is a fun camera to use, especially with all its built-in settings for specific shots. It's the perfect party companion — but if you take it home with you, you'll probably wind up being disappointed... ”

“ Nikon has produced a camera that is not only easy to use, but also takes better than average pictures. However, picture quality isn't the best around: Nikon do a better job themselves with other models, but this is a model still worth looking at.

The large touchscreen, which is surely the interface all digital cameras will eventually embrace, gives you a glance at the future and while the screen resolution needs to be improved, and improved as soon as possible, the ease of use will appeal to the iPhone generation.

The design is a tad on the bulky side (just like an American car) and the 33mm starting point on the lens makes this impractical for shooting in close situations, like down the pub. However if neither of these are an issue for you, and you like the idea of loosing all the buttons, this is certainly one to check out... ”

“ There's no denying the Nikon Coolpix S60 is a hot camera design. It would be great if the touch-screen interface was a little snappier in areas and a physical zoom rocker or at least moving the onscreen one higher on the display would be welcomed. Finicky snapshooters will definitely find menu navigation frustrating and the photos not up to par with its price; if you fall into that category, look at our list of best compact cameras for better options. But if you're itching for a stylish pocket/purse camera for casual use, the S60 is just that... ”
