“ With its tiny size and useful features, the Nikon Coolpix S600 is a well-rounded trim-compact digital camera. Though exposure is automatic, users can adjust everything else from metering mode to white balance, with useful post-capture editing capabilities as well. The Coolpix S600 captures good-looking images under a variety of conditions, thanks to its range of preset Scene modes, and options like Face-Priority AF improve portraits. The Nikon S600's 10-megapixel CCD underperforms when compared to other sensors of this size, however, producing acceptable 11x14-inch images that actually look better printed at 8x10. If that's all you'll print, the Nikon S600 will serve just fine, and it's not a bad deal if you can get it for under $200; but there are better cameras out there, even in the 8-megapixel range, that produce more detail at higher print sizes, so we recommend looking around a bit before settling on the Coolpix S600.... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S600’s lightening fast start-up belies an average (overall) performance elsewhere in the camera, so it is a bit of a mixed bag. And yet, the decent design and build and good image quality might just sway it for you.... ”

“ The styling suggests a camera designed for the happy snapper while some of the features such as the build quality and 3cm macro feature lean towards the user looking to get that bit extra out of a camera.

As a camera for family snaps, the colours are good and it shoots portraits well including when the flash is used. For more serious use, you have the 3cm macro feature with a great depth of field but it falls short on the landscape mode.

If you have a couple of hundred quid to spend on a compact and you want a good looking unit with decent features and a good brand name, then give this a try.... ”

“ The Nikon CoolPix S600 is a great-looking camera with a good practical list of features, especially its useful zoom range and outstanding monitor screen. It is well made, simple to use and takes superb pictures. However it very expensive, and its fiddly controls and less-than-stellar performance don't compare well to its main rivals. Nikon still has some way to go to catch up with Canon, Sony or Panasonic in the luxury compact market.... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S600 packs 10-megapixels, but compared to cheaper 8-megapixel compacts from Nikon, it lacks zoom, manual controls, and dynamic range. The interface is clean, the camera itself looks nice, and the inclusion of optical image-stabilization is always a plus, but it seems that the main selling point of the S600 is its aggrandized megapixel-count, and that simply isn't justification enough for its high price. If image quality and size are tantamount, then we recommend saving up a bit for a prosumer with a larger sensor; if point-and-shoot functionality are most important, then other cameras may better fit the bill. Release: April 2008. Price: $250. ... ”

“ With all the emphasis in Nikon's S600 press release about fast performance, and a good shutter lag response from its low cost sibling, the S210, I was prepared to be impressed by the S600. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting. For some reason, the S600 didn't get the excellent shutter lag performance of the cheaper S210 (and the now-discontinued S500 remains my personal favorite compact digital for shutter lag), so it's not like Nikon doesn't have the means to provide a good shutter response in this class of camera. Frankly, the shutter lag takes the luster off an otherwise fairly capable camera, especially when you realize Nikon can (and has) done better.

There's still a lot to like with the S600 – good color and image quality, optical VR, good ISO performance, a novice-friendly layout, and a wider than usual 28mm lens to capture sweeping vistas or big subjects up close. It would just be more likeable with a dose of S500 genes in the bloodstream, or at least an S210 shutter lag transfusion.... ”

“ A solid compact camera from Nikon, if you have a bit of money to spend the S600 offers a few nice features such as vibration reduction and in-camera red-eye correction on top of some fairly good 10 megapixel images.... ”
