“ Looking at the spec sheets of the S610 and the camera it followed (at least in the numerical sequence), it seemed perhaps Nikon wanted to offer a 10 megapixel compact S-class camera with a 3.0 inch monitor for this market segment – to provide a platform for its wireless camera development if nothing else. The S600 isn't a year old on the market, and aside from the larger monitor and a couple of shooting modes it pretty much matches hardware with the S610. Whatever the reason(s) for it coming out, the S610 offers good image and color quality and a fast AF acquisition time in good light, along with ISO performance on a par with most competitors in the class. This is tempered by shutter lag that is a disappointment – it's not overly bad, but as the S560 demonstrates, it could be much better.

Nikon has clearly fashioned another compact for folks who don't want to sweat the details of image capture. There are some user-defined settings available for those who care, and for those who don't the camera does an admirable job right out of the box. There probably aren't enough changes incorporated into the S610 to attract a lot of S600 users, but someone looking for their first compact or moving into a larger resolution camera could do worse than the S610... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S610 is not the most flexible digital camera around. If you are shooting landscape shots you can get some improvement if you use the landscape scene mode. It is a shame this camera struggles with more distant scenes as I have few complaints with other, closer in photos and the shutter lag and start up times are impressive... ”

“ The Nikon S610 finds itself in the sea of high-resolution ultra-compacts with wide-angle lenses. At least 25 such cameras exist and, despite being slim and well-built, the S610 does not distinguish itself well. Not that it performs poorly, but one must ask why this model rather than another one.

What this digital camera has to offer is a slim body and reliable image quality with below average image noise. Nikon is pushing the idea of ultra-compacts taking the picture for the photographer and this one certainly has its share of automatic modes including Auto-Scene, Smile-Shutter, Face-Detection and Active-Child. The problem with this approach is that it still requires user-intervention to find the right mode and that the camera is only reliable if all the correct settings are set, even when there are so few. Case in point is the S610's white-balance which is only accurate in custom mode.

Performance is reasonable with an unfortunate slip in terms of shot-to-shot speed and shadow details. The latter is actually easier to forgive for intended users who probably do not need 10 megapixels for the typical size of their prints. The former is harder to avoid for subjects in motion, particularly when photographing children.

As a hint for the next review, below is the Nikon Coolpix S610 next to another 10 megapixels point-and-shoot designed for simplicity, the Canon Powershot E1. Note how much smaller the Nikon is. As for competitors that have already been reviewed, check out the superior 12 megapixels Fuji Finepix F100fd with its 5X wide-angle optical zoom and incredible high-ISO performance... ”

“ Nikon's CoolPix S610 would have been quite an impressive unit if it wasn't for its extremely slow shutter speed and shot-to-shot lag. As it stands it still captures fairly good snaps and has some nifty features, but can be irritatingly slow at times. ... ”

“ Overall then, the Coolpix S610 is a mixed bag, superb image quality and clever kit disguised by a deceptively simple design, but the whole in this case is not quite the sum of its parts.

Just like the S600 before it, The Nikon Coolpix S610’s lightening fast start-up belies an otherwise very average overall performance, and so it remains a bit of a mixed bag despite the enhancements. The decent design and build are pluses and so is the image quality which is a big step-up over the S600 but it is not as complete a camera as it should be. ... ”

“ The CoolPix 610 is neat, compact and well-finished. Its start-up and autofocus speeds are quicker than some Nikon compacts of old, too. And as a technological talking point, it's great. As a camera, though, it doesn't really deliver anything new and, if anything, all the new features which sound so intelligent are going to make the basic principles of photography more opaque to beginners than ever before.... ”
