“ The Nikon Coolpix S630 is definitely an eye-catching compact digital camera boasting a lot of updated Nikon technologies, a good 7x optical zoom lens and a 12-megapixel CCD. Working in its favor are its 4-way VR Image Stabilization, zippy EXPEED image processor, and a host of intelligent automatic functions to help you get the most out of your camera. Working against it are some noticeable blurring issues from lens quality, so-so color performance, slower shot-to-shot times, and less-than-accurate white balance. On the flip side of that are an impressive Sports Continuous shooting mode, useful D-Lighting, and Smile/Blink detection tools, and a very high maximum ISO setting (6,400). While the Coolpix S630 isn't for the enthusiast photographer, it's a pretty good camera for the snapshooter, with a long 7x zoom in a pocketable package. Printed results raise its score quite a bit, with the ability to print a nice 11x14 from lower ISO shots, and decent 4x6-inch images even from ISO 1,600 shots. Not bad from such a small camera with a relatively long zoom. We recommend avoiding the higher ISO settings, though. For its unique qualities and good printed results, the Nikon S630 earns a Dave's Pick... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S630 is an eminently respectable point-and-shoot camera. While not heavy on controls, its still image quality was excellent, with low noise, above average color accuracy, and minimal lens distortion. Where the camera faltered was its image stabilization system, a slow continuous burst mode, and standard definition video with very little control.

While short on manual controls, the S630 does have a very good 7x zoom lens, a wide range of ISOs, plenty of scene modes, solid in-camera editing controls, and a pleasant user interface. There were also a couple of nice little additions, like the interval timer mode, plus the availability of both faster burst rates and higher ISOs at reduced resolution.

The Nikon Coolpix S630 has a 12-megapixel sensor, a 7x zoom lens, an ISO range of 64-1600 at full resolution and up to ISO 6400 at reduced. It's currently available for $280... ”

“ With a recommended price tag of almost £300, the Nikon Coolpix S630 is no budget offering, but when compared with other models in the same price bracket, it doesn’t offer a great deal more. Sure, you get a 7x optical zoom, but we think a model offering a 4x or 5x zoom with a wider angle setting would be a more appealing prospect.

Other than that, there’s not a lot that makes the Coolpix S630 stand out from the crowd. There’s no HD movie recording, limited manual control and there are a number of handling issues. You’ll get decent images in most cases, but little improvement over a camera offering 10Mp performance. This isn’t a bad camera, it’s just we expected rather a lot more from brand like Nikon... ”

“ Nikon's flagship style cam is a bit of a divergence from last year's Coolpix S710, one in which advanced shooters will not dig. The Nikon Coolpix S630 received a significant sensor and features downgrade, with only a 7x optical zoom in return. For 2009, the Coolpix S630 focuses more on ease of use and sexiness than image quality and useful tools. We liked the suave design and simple menus of the Coolpix S630, but felt shafted when it came to low light shooting and intricate field depths due to the minimal shutter speed and tight aperture range. The Nikon Coolpix S630 will fly off shelves based on its beckoning looks, but shooters looking for more out of a typical style cam will not be impressed. Furthermore, the Nikon Coolpix S710 is only a $20 hike and will offer mountains more in the realm of image quality and adjustment. We recommend sticking with last year’s sure shot or checking out Canon’s new PowerShots... ”

“ On paper, the Nikon Coolpix S630 sounds like an impressive camera. It offers a 7X zoom lens in a stylish, compact body that would normally house a 3X or 4X lens. It has all the required point-and-shoot features, including auto scene selection, face/smile/blink detection, and help screens for every menu option. Unfortunately, the Coolpix S630 fails at its most important task: taking a quality photograph. There are numerous other issues, ranging from poor low light focusing to annoyances in movie mode. If you're going to spend $280 on a digital camera, I'd suggest choosing a camera other than the Coolpix S630.

The Coolpix S630 is a compact and stylish camera that comes in five colors (the red is especially sharp). The body is made of a mixture of metal and plastic, and it feels fairly solid, except for on the bottom. There you'll find a very flimsy door over the memory card and battery compartment, plus a plastic tripod mount. And, since the two are so close together, you won't be able to access the memory card slot while the camera is on a tripod. Nikon did a good job at making the S630 easy to hold with one had, with plenty of room for your thumb. The buttons are on the small side, but it didn't bother me very much in the real world. The S630 features a 7X optical zoom lens, with a focal range of 37 - 260 mm. As is often the case with compact lenses, the one here is on the "slow" side, with a maximum aperture of F3.5 - F5.3. The camera uses a very noisy sensor-shift image stabilization system, which does an effective job of reducing blurry photos. Do note that you cannot use it in movie mode, though. On the back of the camera is a 2.7" LCD display with 230,000 pixels. I found the screen fairly easy to see outdoors and in low light situations. Like all compact cameras, the S630 lacks an optical viewfinder.

Bottom line - The Coolpix S630 is one of those cameras that I really wanted to like, but after spending a few months with it, I was disappointed. I like the design and the big zoom in a small package concept, but the photo quality and performance leave much to be desired. There are certainly better cameras out there for your hard-earned money, and I'd suggest taking a look at them instead (see below for some starting points)... ”

“ For a little compact I don't think it's too bad. I think if you had this as something to stick in your pocket on those family days when the bag you're carrying will have sandwiches in, then it'll do the job nicely. It seems to prefer sunny days, but then don't we all?

One thing it will be useful for is those quick reaction times due to it's fast response. Candid shots, airshows, motorsports would all benefit from a camera will fast reactions.

It's let down in the noise area and the battery lid being really flimsy but if you can look past this then you've got a nice little compact... ”

“ Nikon's Coolpix S630 is a compact, 12-megapixel, digicam that is full of top-of-the-line features. The 7x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization, smart portrait system and new Expeed image processor really make this camera stand out when compared to other digicams in its price range. As always you get the ease of use and good image quality that we have come to expect from Nikon. With a MSRP of US$279.95, we feel this camera will make a great choice for anyone looking to get a little more versatility than your typical compact digicam has to offer... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S630 is a small camera with a lot of zoom and resolution. There’s optical image stabilization, a really, really nice, ergonomic grip (I can’t stop talking about it because it’s that good) and numerous point-and-shoot features. The camera has decent performance (some areas are above average) and very good LCD visibility. However, battery life and movie mode on the Coolpix S630 are not so great.

There are lots of features which appeal to those who want a simple camera. You’ll get the whole bundle of Nikon goodies and more in their Smart Portrait system (face, blink, smile detection, redeye fix and D-Lighting) as well as Motion Detection and scene selection which automatically pick an ISO value and scene mode respectively based on different conditions. The S630 has no manual controls though.

The Nikon Coolpix S630’s downfall is pretty anti-climatic, just about everything was smooth sailing (except battery life and movie mode) until we reached image quality. What’s the use of having good ergonomics and a decent set of point-and-shoot features when a camera can’t take good quality photos? If you actually do buy the Coolpix S630, remember to get an extra battery and be prepared to do cleaning up of images on your computer... ”

“ If you were considering an average compact point-and-shoot with a more typical 3x zoom, the Nikon Coolpix S630 is a nice (there's that word again) step up. It's not particularly fast and the photos are merely good, but it is an excellent design, has a very good feature set, and it's easy to use... ”

“ Although it's a bit expensive for a point-and-shoot automatic, the Nikon CoolPix S630 does offer excellent handling, Nikon's impeccable build quality, a big 7x zoom and very good picture quality. It copes well with most lighting conditions, and is ideal for holiday snaps and social situations. Performance is a bit slow, and it lacks some of the latest features, but it's a nice camera to use and takes good pictures... ”
