“ The Nikon Coolpix S640 is everything the recently tested S570 is not, particularly in terms of speed. However, its price may raise some eyebrows. But when you bear in mind the clever automated features and technology that are ensconced within the S640’s svelte frame, and then perhaps the price is a little more understandable.

High ISO image noise is perhaps the perennial problem here, but at least you can mitigate its vagaries by limiting the highest ISO range used and the fact the noise does not intrude until higher up the sensitivity scale.

The speediness of the S640 is nice to have but it’s not as fast as Nikon make out when you factor in the slow menu usage, the fact the AF is not always on target and the slow write speeds of those large 12.2-megapixel files... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S640 is just a little above a basic point-and-shoot ultracompact. It's not a bad camera, but it doesn't excel in any one or more areas. Its shooting performance is improved over other Coolpix cameras; however, that only puts it in line with the competition. It does take good photos at ISO 200 and below and to some degree ISO 400. Also in its favor is that it's simple to operate and looks and feels good. If you don't want HD-quality movie capture, the S640 is a fine wide-angle, 5x zoom ultracompact... ”

“ Although it doesn't live up to Nikon's extravagent marketing claims, the CoolPix S640 is still a very competent camera. Build quality is good, it handles well, performs briskly and takes a decent picture in a wide range of situations; low light performance is especially good. It's not quite a bargain, but it is a nice little camera... ”

“ With the S640, Nikon has raised the bar for this type of camera. The additional of a speedy auto-focus and improved image stabilization means better pictures for the average photographer. The ease of use, Smart Portrait mode, and good battery life add to the enjoyment of using the camera.

A good wide angle lens, adequate megapixels, and good zoom combine to make the Coolpix S640 a camera that does a good job across the board. It’s a camera that you can use indoors or outdoors and can take from birthday party to soccer game and be sure of always producing good solid photographs.

We set out to find out if the Nikon Coolpix S640 was a winner and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was not just a winner, but an all-around winner... ”

“ Compact cameras have always been popular (at least in part) because they're unobtrusive and not intimidating to subjects. The inconspicuous little Nikon Coolpix S640 should fit right in - it does a remarkably good job across the board and it's tough enough to go just about anywhere. Auto focus speed is on par with many entry-level DSLRs and the S640 is as fast or faster than any camera in its class. Image quality is dependably very good to excellent with balanced contrast, bold bright colors, and acceptable noise levels up to ISO 800. Chromatic aberration (purple fringing) is very well controlled, and the 0.8 inch macro shooting capability is very useful. The S640's triple threat VR system is also a welcome feature.

The Nikon Coolpix S640 provides users with an impressive mixture of versatility, ease of use, and operational speed to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of a surprisingly diverse group of shooters. The S640 is an excellent general-use digicam that is so simple to operate that even absolute beginners can capture stunning images. The S640 is tiny, it's fast, and it consistently delivers first-rate images of both static and active subjects - making it a great choice for family photographers and casual shooters looking a stylish ultra-compact digicam capable of capturing great images outdoors and indoors.

Unlike most of its competition, the Coolpix S640 will also appeal to candid/street/documentary shooters looking for a low-profile picture machine with a little extra reach that's quick enough to capture the decisive moment. The S640 also offers hikers, backpackers, off-trail bikers, extreme sports fans, and adventure travelers lots of photographic potential in a small, light-weight package... ”

“ The S640 delivers good, but not excellent pictures for the price. It's a speedy performer in most accounts, apart from the lengthy delay between starting up and being ready to shoot. For the same money and similar specifications, the Canon has the added bonus of HD video and punchier pictures, making the decision between the two a little easier... ”

“ I recommend the Nikon S640 for those of you looking for something simple, yet capable. It’s a decent point and shoot camera, but not necessarily one that will stand out in the crowd.

Probably the biggest gripe I have about it is the slow startup time. Once you get it up and running though, it’s quite the shooter and will help you get over the shutter-delay phobia produced by your last point and shoot camera.

Obviously, there are a number of features in the S640 that I didn’t cover here (video, in-camera retouching, etc.). If you want to see a full spec and feature list for the camera, you can find it at B&H or Nikon.com... ”

“ The Nikon Coolpix S640 is one of the fastest compact cameras currently on the market, quickly starting up and finding focus in good light and bad. An inexplicable 5 second delay after the S640 is powered on and a rather average feature set detract from an otherwise accomplished camera.

Nikon are pushing the speed of the S640, and it certainly doesn't disappoint in this regard. Focusing is on a par with most entry-level DSLRs, quickly locking onto the subject without too many misses. The S640 also bursts into life very quickly, although it's best to leave the camera turned on to avoid that puzzling 5 second "freeze". Other features are a little more mundane, with the versatile 5x optical zoom the pick of the bunch.

Image quality is very good, with more than acceptable results in terms of noise from ISO 100-800, although the faster settings of 3200 and 6400 aren't worth using. Chromatic aberrations are well-controlled, the 2cm macro is very useful, as is the built-in anti-shake system. Only a slightly under-powered flash and disappointing maximum shutter speed of 4 seconds spoil an otherwise appealing performance.

In summary, the Nikon Coolpix S640 is a simple-to-use point-and-shoot compact that won't leave you hanging around, being fast and clever enough to take sharp pictures of both static and moving subjects - exactly what most family snappers want from a camera... ”

“ The Nikon CoolPix S640 is a surprisingly fast and very versatile ultra-compact digicam. Sporting a 12.2-Megapixel imaging sensor, Nikkor 5x optical zoom lens, Lens Shift image stabilization and Auto Scene Selector mode, this is a camera that anyone can pick up, turn on and capture beautiful, high-resolution images just by pointing and shooting. The only major drawback is a noticeable amount of edge softness in most of our sample images. With a MSRP of US$249.95, this is a serious contender in the market for ultra-compact digicams under US$300. You may also want to look at the Samsung TL225, or the Canon PowerShot SD940 IS... ”
