“ Buy this camera if:
- You're looking for a small DSLR camera that can accept a wide range of relatively compact lenses.
- You require sophisticated in-camera image stabilisation and effective dust reduction technology.
- You'd enjoy a DSLR with lots of in-camera adjustments and special effects for JPEG files.
- You want a Live View system that offers extensive preview functions plus support for autofocusing.

Don't buy this camera if:
- You want to shoot video (the E-450 can't).
- You won't take advantage of the higher quality produced by shooting raw files and converting them in Adobe's Photoshop Elements or Photoshop.
- You require faster continuous shooting speeds than 3.5 frames/second.
- You're not prepared to grapple with the complexity of the controls and menu system... ”

“ As a step up from a compact camera, the Olympus E-450 is a strong contender for your cash. Pentax offers the equally appealing K200D, which features the same sensor resolution but adds a very attractive body-integrated anti-shake system. That model uses four AA batteries, though, and is pretty heavy as a result. It also lacks live view and has an even less sophisticated phase-detection (viewfinder-based) AF system than the three-point AF module found on the E-450. Alternatively, you could consider the new Nikon D3000 or perhaps the Sony Alpha DSLR-A230, but both these models are new and, as yet, untested... ”

“ The image quality of the Olympus E-450 is certainly good. Especially for the novice, the Olympus E-450 will be a good camera that allows for easy and effective shooting. The many settings, a pleasant operation and a compact size make the camera combination that can be looked at with pride. We have only one small comment and that is the lack of an optical image stabilizer. Understandable from the marketing viewpoint of Olympus, but that does not make it easier to accept the fact that it is absent. Actually, we expect to find this effective stabilization technique in an entry DSLR from Olympus, as it would also contribute positively to the unnecessary need to use high ISO values... ”

“ Olympus keep releasing cameras that are competing really well with Canon and Nikon. The menus are easy to use and they sport features that comparable cameras from the other manufacturers don't have. In this case it's the Art Filters and exposure compensation giving that extra bit of freedom to expand your creativity.

I like some of the features that Olympus have put on the E-450 and I think it could do well as long as people start to understand that FourThirds isn't a bad system to buy into. It works easily enough I can just see a lot of newcomers to photography being turned off because of all the buttons on the body.

Image quality is great, though, as is noise control and colour rendition. If you can see past the complexity of the buttons then you will bag yourself a lovely little camera... ”

“ Although the E-450 is a budget model, it's not been dumbed down and keen photographers will find it gives them all the hands-on control they want, without burying the technicalities, and that's a large part of its charm... ”

“ The Olympus E-450 is a very compact, lightweight yet fairly robust feeling little DSLR that comes with a lot of features for an entry-level camera. Not only does it offer manual exposure and focusing modes for the advanced user; it also has features like highlight-, shadow- and midtone-based spot metering, user-configurable mirror lock-up (Anti-Shock), wireless TTL flash control, Shadow Adjustment Technology and contrast-detect auto-focus in Live View.

Other features, however, are notable by their absence. These include image stabilisation, LCD articulation and video recording. The controls also leave a bit to be desired, as there are no dedicated buttons for changing the focusing mode, ISO sensitivity, white balance and metering mode. This is regrettable even if there is a customisable Fn button and a reprogrammable drive mode button – I would really have liked to see these functions mapped onto the four-way controller. Finally, the E-450 makes do with the small finder and rudimentary 3-point auto-focus of the E-420, both of which seem frankly obsolete for a 2009 model. To be fair, if you are really bothered by any of these, you can opt for the Olympus E-620 instead, which has everything you may miss from the E-450 except video.

The advantage of the E-450 over the E-620 is its lower price and weight – not that the E-620 is terribly heavy but the E-450 is lighter still, and costs considerably less. A more important question is what the E-450 offers over the E-420, which can be had for even less? A subtly different LCD screen and processing engine aside, the difference is limited to the three Art Filters, present in the E-450 but absent from the E-420. The Art Filters are well implemented and admittedly fun to use, but are they enough to sway you away from the cheaper E-420? Only you can tell... ”
