“ The Olympus FE340 is a simple 8 megapixel camera for casual point-and-shoot purposes. The camera is powered by a lithium-ion battery (thus the thin design) and packs more zoom than you'll typically find on a camera like this. That'll be 5X optical zoom, though the FE340 could use some sort of 'real' image stabilization as opposed to the digital version which merely boosts ISO (you can do that yourself too).

There's a mode dial and generally not too many buttons to confuse the average user. And for those who are just starting out (or don't bother reading the manual), there's always the built-in guide feature. The Olympus FE340 is designed more for snapshots without fuss; it has various scene modes and no manual controls, at all. Perfect Shot Preview shows you the effects of photos before you hit the shutter button and there's smile detection which automatically takes 3 shots without you lifting a finger when the camera detects a smile.

Unfortunately some corners were cut while loading up the camera with fancy auto features like that, and the edit functions in playback... the Olympus FE340 lacks a burst mode and operates in a lackluster manner in terms of performance, that includes low-light auto focus and below average battery life.

Bottom line is, the Olympus FE340 is a very much automatic mode camera which can take some decently good shots straight out of the box BUT is not for the impatient or for snapping pets, kids, sports or anything that's moving quickly. If you're attracted to the fairly slim design with an above average 5X zoom lens, then fine. If you're looking for a budget camera that's good in all areas, then there are other (better) options out there, some even with 5-6X zoom lenses although not as compact as this camera.... ”

“ The Olympus FE-340 may be very cheap, but it lacks a number of features that would be considered standard on most other cameras, such as continuous shooting, colour adjustment and image stabilisation. The build quality is good, and the LCD monitor is outstanding, but the styling is awkward and ungainly and the handling could be better. Low-light performance is below average, but the camera is redeemed somewhat by good image quality. Still, there are much better and more capable cameras available for not much more money.... ”

“ The Olympus FE-340 is pocketable and user friendly, and boasts a very nice selection of preset scene modes, auto modes and useful in-camera guides and correction tools. It's an excellent choice for novices who want to learn slowly, and for anyone who takes primarily portraits. Its 8.0-megapixel CCD captures fairly high resolution images, with good overall detail, though finer details are a bit on the soft side. Our sample also produced soft images in the lower left corner. Image noise plays a part here, particularly in the higher ISO settings. Still, useful tools like Face Detection and Smile Shot will attract many consumers, and the camera's flexible range of presets are useful in a wide variety of situations. All in all, not a bad camera at US$199.99 MSRP -- and its fun selection of body colors will turn some heads.... ”

“ The Olympus FE-340 provides a respectable 8 megapixels of resolution with acceptable levels of performance across the board. If you are looking for a well built, slim, entry-level camera that's easy to use, the FE-340 makes a good choice. However, the average image quality and smeared flash photos make this camera fall short of perfection. There are a lot of good things about the camera – easy-to-use interface, stylish build, great colors, and a good lens with a little more range than is the norm at this price point. Unfortunately, you'll have to accept the good with the bad, which means soft details, aggressive NR in high-ISO performance, and average battery life.... ”

“ The FE-340 is an easy to use, ultra-compact camera, with an 8-megapixel imaging sensor and above average 5x optical zoom lens. It offers some very nice features and innovative shooting modes such as "Smile Shot," along with descent all around quality images. However, the performance, 10 second max VGA (30fps) movie mode and lack of continuous capture features are disappointing. With an MSRP of US$200, this is not a bad camera for someone that takes the occasional pictures at family gatherings or on vacations. If you are looking for a similarly priced model with better performance, image quality, and longer movie recording, check out our review of the Canon SD1100 IS, which can be had for just $50 more. ... ”
