“ Keeping in mind that this camera has a MSRP of around $160.00, which puts it in the entry-level market, the Olympus FE-5020 gets a "C" from me. I never really connected with this camera. Little things like a very short battery life, tons of waiting for images to process and a slow proprietary xD storage card contributed to this. Bigger issues include a weak flash, and in my opinion a lack of any vibrancy in our sample images, along with a good amount of noise that found its way into a lot of our spontaneous snap-shots. The FE-5020 can capture nice pictures, but this involves some work; like carrying around a monopod or only shooting subjects in near perfect lighting... ”

“ As a low-cost ultra-compact the Olympus FE-5020 does offer a greater zoom range and a wider wide-angle than anything else of comparable price, but its awkward handling, limited range of features, poor performance and lack of low-light ability, as well as its disappointing overall image quality limit its appeal... ”

“ Those looking to get a better quality of image than their current camera phone will allow, whilst retaining a capture device with a small form factor, could do worse than further investigate the 12 megapixel Olympus FE-5020. However, a better overall image quality and consistency of capture can be found elsewhere - namely among rival snapshots from Canon and Panasonic. Yes, the Magic Filters are fun and help the 5020 stand out from the crowd, but surely no one buys a camera for funky effects alone.

Though Olympus has been innovative at the higher end of the market with its E-series DSLRs and the exciting digital Pen, its compact cameras seem to be suffering. It's a shame as its all-metal Mju cameras at the start of the decade were small truly objects of desire. And whilst the FE-5020 undoubtedly looks good if you choose the white and chrome combination we had, there's not as much substance behind the style as there could be.

To end on a positive, in the FE-5020's favour it features a broader focal range than a camera this slender and relatively inexpensive has any right to have. For its price we also believe this model - all things considered - to be a better value bet than its flashier sibling in the simultaneously announced Mju 7010 model, also 12 megapixels... ”

“ So, can an inexpensive pocket snapper really be that much cop when it comes to delivering images? Actually no. Although the FE-5020’s light sensitivity range is broader than you’d expect from this class of camera, in stretching from ISO64 (instead of the usual ISO100) to the more predictable ISO1600, noise intrudes visibly upwards of ISO400, plus, with this model, image stabilisation is electronic rather than the more desirable mechanic.

Since the surface of the slender camera is slippery and shutter speed seemingly sluggish, we managed to get the occasional instance of camera shake even under what should have been a perfectly adequate amount of daylight.

Tricky exposures commonly lead to blown highlight detail, while instances of pixel fringing are readily apparent when zooming in on detail. In truth, this is the sort of performance we’d expect to get from a budget model, and perhaps it seems extra disappointing because the camera’s polished exterior suggests it might have been capable of more.

Despite our nit-picking reservations about picture quality, the camera’s beginner target market will be less fussy, so the FE-5020 remains a decent investment for those within the region of £150 to spend. Alternatives from Panasonic, Sony et al are however looking a better bet for those with slightly more cash-in-hand... ”
