“ Yes, there's room for improvement in the lab testing, and even after using it for a few weeks the sloppy zoom control is still annoying, but overall this is a camera we really enjoy. It feels great in your hand, delivers photos that stand up well at all but enormous print sizes, and provides enough manual control to satisfy our urges to tweak and fiddle. The controls are well organized for quick adjustments, and the LCD stands up to outdoor illumination better than most (with the electronic viewfinder as a perfectly serviceable backup). The full-resolution burst-mode is pokey, but snagging 5-megapixel images at a solid seven frames a second nearly makes up for that shortcoming, and the rock-solid image stabilization system is a true pleasure, making handheld long-zoom photography literally a snap. We usually grab an SLR when headed out to shoot, but recently we've found ourselves voting for portability and long zoom versus optimal image quality on several occasions, and that's high praise for the 570UZ... ”

“ Just as it did when it introduced the 18x zoom, Olympus has broken the long zoom barrier again with the 20x SP-570. At the same time, the company added a hot shoe (and wireless flash support) and a command dial to bring the SP-570 even closer to digital SLR standards.

While the 20x zoom suffers the optical flaws of all long zooms, including chromatic aberration and soft corners, that isn't the big problem with this camera. The unforgivable sluggishness of the zoom ring, which has been moved from around the Shutter button on the SP-560 to the lens itself on the SP-570, is the deal killer.... ”

“ The Olympus SP-570 UZ is a pleasant camera to use, with some nice handling features such as a decent EVF, good zoom ring and plenty of control. It's Raw capabilities are interesting, but it lacks the finesse of some competitors, particularly when it comes to the images, Apart from exposure, which is easily remedied, the fringing from the lens is appalling, while the noise is average. You may be buying the longest super-zoom available but it's hardly the best.... ”

“ The Olympus SP-570 UZ is a very capable 10.1-megapixel Ultra-zoom camera that offers a variety of very nice features, including an awesome 20x Wide zoom lens. The image quality was excellent both indoors and out. The one disappointment is that its performance has not gotten any better from the previous model. With a street price of US$499 or less, this camera kit offers a decent deal when you consider the features and quality that you getting. It could also be a great choice for those who are not quite ready to take the leap into the dSLR world, but want plenty of options/controls. However, at this price range, you are getting real close to the cost of one of the several entry-level dSLR/lens kits on the market right now. ... ”

“ More than a year after Olympus' introduction of the SP-550UZ, it is clear that the company takes its return to the superzoom segment seriously. The SP-560UZ already resolved some of the issues that plagued its predecessor, and with the SP-570UZ the company has demonstrated that it is willing to improve this line even further. The main selling point of the camera is the huge zoom, and this is one area where the SP-570UZ doesn't disappoint. So long as you steer clear of f/8, the lens delivers excellent sharpness across its entire range. The zoom action can be jerky at times, but ditching the zoom lever in favour of a zoom ring was definitely a step in the right direction. If only Olympus could substitute it with a true mechanically coupled one without sacrificing compactness, they would have a winner on their hands. The other additions, such as the control wheel and the hot-shoe have made the SP-570UZ a lot more serious and versatile camera, which will undoubtedly appeal to advanced photographers. Its operational speed and high-ISO image quality might not be a match for DSLRs, but it makes up for what it lacks in these departments by offering great flexibility in a compact package. So, who should consider buying it? Firstly, those who want full control over how their photographs are made, but have certain aversions to SLRs. Secondly, those who already own a DSLR but do not want to carry it and at least three lenses along all the time. The SP-570UZ, like any other camera, has its limitations – but if you know what they are, you can decide whether you can live with them or not.... ”

“ There are some questions raised regarding the design of this camera: Why is the zoom working in steps when a ring is used? Why can't I access the quick menu from the back screen instead of going into the main menu?

I can't help but think that the camera has been released because Olympus wanted to stick a 20x optical zoom into a camera and raise its profile over the top of the other models that are in the same classification. It's a shame that simple areas are lacking as that has the possibility of sullying Olympus' new found respect in the performance camera arena thanks, in part to the DSLRs doing so well.

If you're looking for a camera that has a stupidly large zoom bolted on the front, then this camera is right up your street, just be careful that the rest of the camera can come up to scratch for your needs.... ”

“ Up to the point when I opened the box containing the Olympus SP-570 UZ, the Canon S5 was my all-time favorite long zoom digicam. Having now spent some time with the SP-570, that's no longer the case. Serious shooters looking for that mythical point-and-shoot digicam that adequately replaces a DSLR and a bag of lenses could do much worse than the SP-570 UZ. The SP-570 UZ has a couple of irritating shortcomings and it's a poor choice for those who like to shoot in low/dim light and those who shoot primarily action, but for just about everyone else (in my opinion) this camera stands head and shoulders above the bloated long-zoom digicam field. ... ”

“ So, should you buy the Olympus SP-570UZ or would it be best to go for a DSLR. Well it all depends on what you want or need from a camera. If your aim is to make photography your hobby, prices of DSLRs are so low nowadays that they would make an ideal start to what can be a fantastic pastime, with the possibility to start a complete system from scratch. Olympus do have some nice offerings in this department as well, and we might make them the subject of another test some other time.

If however, you do not want to carry all that weight around and require a well-designed camera with a compact body and comprehensive features, the Olympus SP-570UZ would not be a bad choice at all. It can capture nice wide angle shots of landscapes or interiors while the tele lens is long enough to capture that bird on a wire as well. Handling is excellent and image quality is very good. Add to this a good image stabilisation system, shadow adjustment and face detection, and lots of manual control.

The Olympus SP-570UZ does have a few flaws however, although none of them serious enough to make this a bad camera, not by any means. Find out if you can live with its limited battery life and slow zooming but also take into consideration that the camera has so many options that a creative photographer will find most things he will need in this camera - and more. Just remember to stick to those lower ISO settings and carry a spare set of batteries and you really can't go wrong. So try one out in the shops, compare it with similar offerings from other manufacturers and then make your final choice. ... ”
