“ As an outdoor photographer who’s out shooting in all kinds of conditions, I think the Olympus Stylus SW cameras are really, really cool. If it seems like I am judging this camera harshly, it’s only because I want it to be awesome. With its near-indestructible pocketability, the 1030 SW could be the best point-and-shoot ever. But it isn’t, yet. At a bare minimum, it needs better image quality. And I’d really like an optical viewfinder so I can shoot better action photos with it. Mechanical image stabilization would push it over the edge. Make those three changes in the next top-of-the-line Stylus SW and it will be a hands-down, no-questions-asked, kick-ass point-and-shoot.

In the end, the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW is what it is - a one-of-a-kind outdoor point-and-shoot digital camera. You can carry it in your pocket all the time and use it to get good photos in the worst of conditions; you can even safely take it snorkeling in salt water. It’s a great camera because it’s so durable and will be there for you when other cameras won’t. But you have to compromise a bit on image quality for that all-conditions performance. And that leaves me with mixed feelings. I want to love the Stylus 1030 SW but I just can’t. I do like it a lot and take tons of pictures with it. But love would require - at a minimum - image quality I can count on. ... ”

“ This tough little point-and-shoot camera can withstand conditions -- and handling -- that would wreak havoc with other cameras. The Olympus Stylus 1030SW also offers a nice selection of features that are helpful for novices and snapshooters. You won't find the best image quality, although if you don't look too closely you'll be happy with prints up to 8x10 inches at lower ISOs; and you can still get decent 5x7's as long as you don't go above ISO 800. You don't have to be an outdoor enthusiast to benefit from this camera's ruggedness, though -- think beach, pool, boat, or the slopes in winter. The Olympus Stylus 1030SW is small enough to take anywhere with you and strong enough to hold up under any conditions.

Olympus gets points for again producing a very rugged digital camera with a 28mm wide-angle lens, but they should have been able to improve the image quality over the last two years; unfortunately, despite the increased resolution, printed output is actually worse in the 10-megapixel 1030SW than it was in the 7.1-megapixel 720SW. So though it doesn't earn a Dave's Pick, the Olympus Stylus 1030SW is a decent choice for rugged conditions.... ”

“ Undoubtedly, the Stylus 1030SW's weak spot is its photo quality. On the positive side, the camera took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, saturated colors, and it also keeps purple fringing at bay. The bad news is that these photos have heavy noise reduction, and substantial blurring around the edges of the frame (no doubt due to the lens design). Now, if you're mostly printing at 4 x 6, then this won't matter. But if you're willing to give up the build quality of the camera, you can certainly do better in the photo quality department. Redeye is also a problem on the Stylus 1030SW, though there's a tool in playback mode that gets rid of it for you.

There are a few other issues that I want to mention before I wrap things up. First, I'm not a fan of the plastic tripod mount (on such a well built camera, no less) or the fact that you can't get to the memory card while the Stylus is on a tripod. Second, the amount of built-in memory is tiny, holding just three photos at the highest quality setting. Finally, while I'm pleased that Olympus provided the manual in printed form, its quality leaves much to be desired.

Do you need a camera that can stand up to whatever you throw at it? Then the Stylus 1030SW is worth a look, as long as your photo quality expectations aren't terribly high. If it's an ultra-compact camera you're after, I'd consider something better, and just get the underwater case if you want to take it swimming.... ”

“ Make no mistake, this is a genuinely tough camera, suitable for genuinely tough expedition work -- as well as family daytrips to the beach. It's easy and fast to use in most conditions, has a lovely wide-angle lens and just enough modern photo smarts (such as face detection) to hold its head up in company. Image quality doesn't quite reach the heights of similarly priced rivals -- but then those cameras can't literally reach the heights (or depths) that the 1030SW attains with ease.... ”

“ If I was looking for a tough, family camera then this Olympus digital camera is the one I would go for. It is very hard to break, works in just about any environment and fits into a pocket too. There is not a lot else to look for really.

The MJU 1030 SW is a tremendously tough and rugged camera. It is small enough to slip into a pocket and takes a good snap shot too. This camera is well worth considering if you are looking for a robust, take anywhere camera.... ”

“ For those possessed of an adventurous spirit, such as skiers, gap year backpackers or snorkelling enthusiasts, the Olympus mju 1030 SW could be the answer to their dreams. The build of this camera is fantastic and a remarkable feat of engineering in what is usually a delicate electronic instrument.

The image quality lets it down a little, but compromises must be made somewhere, and I imagine this is an area sacrificed for the convenience of robustness. That said, if you are climbing a mountain, for example, it's better to have a tough camera that takes average pictures than a perfect camera that's broken.... ”

“ Though you'll find some good deals online, you're not going to buy an Olympus Mju 1030 SW unless you also buy into its exterior toughness – as it's obviously costing you a little extra over similarly specified competitors. At a time when a lot of rivals shout about features that amount to little more than gimmicks, however, it's good to find Olympus providing the consumer with a unique selling point that is more than just a conversation piece and is genuinely useful. Even though it's boxy and business like in design, the mju 1030 SW is not unattractive. Also in its favour, this is a camera that is fast in operation and as easy to use as it is sturdy – as it should be if you're hurtling down the slopes with it or diving into the pool at the villa. The negatives are those unimpressive (at this price point) plastic controls at the rear, and an image performance that is just above average, though the shadow adjustment is a nice touch that provides better results with minimum fuss. The Olympus Mju 1030 SW comes with a two-year warranty, providing peace of mind should you indeed test it to breaking point. Recommended (just).... ”
