“ The Olympus Stylus 1050 SW is a handsome, practical camera that will serve hard-charging outdoor enthusiasts well. I happily took it with me on most of my trips to the ski resort this winter and have lots of great photos to show for it. It has a few faults, namely the too easy to open sliding lens cover, poor battery life in the cold and less than stellar image quality. Tap Control is neat but mostly hype until it can be used to access exposure compensation. If you want a wider lens you can step up to the 1030 SW, which has a 28mm equivalent. Even though you can buy point-and-shoot cameras with better image quality, you might be tempted to leave them at home when the going gets rough. Trading some image quality for the 1050 SW’s shockproof, waterproof build is a fair compromise in my book. In the end I’m pretty pleased with most of the photos I took with it. They take a little more work in Photoshop than another camera might, but they’re good once I’m done with them. The most important thing is I don’t worry about dropping the camera or getting it wet or snowy. Those things are non-issues with the Olympus Stylus 1050 SW. And that’s really what it’s all about... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 1050 SW is ultimately disappointing. I really like the Tap Control, so it's great to see it carried over to newer models. But everything else about the camera, save for a few features and its "-proofing," is comparable to an average point-and-shoot camera that you can find for less. So if you don't need the Tap Control and extra protection, go elsewhere. And if you do want those things and can afford a little more, check out Olympus' Tough series instead... ”

“ On the one hand, Olympus has done something truly impressive with the Stylus 1050 SW: build a meticulously crafted ultracompact that's capable of going anywhere, and bring it market at a price well below what's been expected for an extremely rugged ultracompact. Reliability and, for the most part, even usability are top notch, making the 1050 an attractive option for adventurous snapshooters who don't want to worry about their camera – whatever the weather, or the day's activities, may bring.

But even with the compromises that have to be made in the name of ruggedness, it's not too much to ask to expect the camera to also focus quickly and reliably (even indoors!), take usable ISO 1600 pictures, and offer decent battery life. Unfortunately, these performance and image quality issues form a contingent of concerns that will likely steer many advanced shooters away from the otherwise capable Stylus 1050. Olympus deserves kudos for building a serious all-weather camera, and casual photographers should be very happy with the value and durability that this camera represents. But the 1050 comes up just short on the promise of offering both great go-anywhere performance and excellent – and not merely just acceptable – shooting speed and image quality... ”

“ Over the past few generations, Olympus has carved out a real name for itself in the tough, waterproof digital camera market, stealing the thunder from arch rival Pentax. The Olympus SW range – now rebranded as TOUGH – became the models to go for if you had an active lifestyle where knocks, splashes or complete submersion were common.

The 1050 SW doesn’t mess too much with a winning formula, taking the earlier 850 SW, slightly boosting its resolution and screen size, while adding tap controls. That’s essentially about it though, and while it may have been sufficient without serious competition, Pentax has really taken the bull by the horns with its latest Optio W60. Rather than resting on its laurels, the Optio W60 boasts a more flexible 5x optical range which zooms both wider and longer than the Olympus. While it’s thicker, the shorter height makes it look much smaller, and despite not sharing the shock and freeze-proof credentials of the Olympus, it coped with some pretty rough handling in our tests. So while the Olympus 1050 SW is a perfectly capable compact with decent underwater credentials, the Optio W60 out-features it.

At this point it’s important to note while both models deliver better quality than many previous underwater cameras, a good terrestrial model like the Canon IXUS 870IS / SD 880IS will still out-perform them in still and video performance, while crucially offering stabilisation and a much nicer screen to boot... ”

“ This is definitely a niche camera, but one that is very good at what it does. For shooting in extreme weather conditions, or simply surviving everyday bumps and scrapes, the Stylus 1050 SW delivers excellent photo quality with little fuss... ”

“ This is a well-constructed metal-body camera that looks stylish and sophisticated while boldy going where a less ruggedized model would fear to tread. We like the multitude of scene modes, the high-speed still mode (albeit at reduced resolution) and the panoramic photo modes, which are easy to use and turn out fun results. However, image quality isn't what it should be for $300, and there are other ruggedized cameras (including Olympus' own Stylus 1030 SW) that outperform this one at very similar prices... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 1050 SW has undergone a redesign. Still "the toughest compact digital camera on the planet," it now features Tap Control technology that makes the 1050 SW sensitive to a tap to almost any part of its body. Selecting the most common menu settings is now just a matter of tapping the top, back or sides of the camera.

The 1050 SW has 10.1MP resolution, a large 2.7-in. LCD (230K dots) and is shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, and dustproof. It can withstand a drop from 1.5 metres (5 feet) with its shock-absorbing technology, which minimizes the impact on the lens and circuitry. It will keep operating in freezing snowstorms down to -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). Its lightweight, aluminum exterior is matched with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings to seal out the elements and allows it to be fully submerged to depths of approximately 3 metres (10 feet). It also features a water-repellant lens coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens... ”

“ The 1050SW is both pretty and tough, but this leads to compromises. In normal use it's not as slick or as elegant as, say, a Sony T-series CyberShot, and in more extreme environments you're going to want something fat and grippy, not a slippery little superslim like this one... ”

“ The 'Lifeproof' Olympus Stylus 1050 SW is made for the individual or group that is always on the go. With a very easy user interface and latest “Tap Control” technology, this is one of the easiest cameras to operate in difficult or extreme conditions. With good image quality and all of the great features offered from the "SW" line, the MSRP of US$299.99 is reasonable. If better performance is critical, then you might want to check out the other "SW" models with varying specs and prices, to find one that meets your needs... ”

“ Unless you're dead set on a ruggedized or waterproof camera, there are plenty of options that will deliver sharper 10.1-megapixel shots and a lot less shutter lag than the Olympus Stylus 1050 SW, including the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS or the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300. If you need a waterproof shooter, the Stylus 1030 SW offers better-looking images (but for a steep $400). If you've been holding back on taking shots on the ski slopes or just want more nimble controls, however, the 1050 SW's innovative tapping controls might appeal to you. Just don't expect speed or stellar shots... ”
