“ The Olympus Stylus 7010 is an interesting offering. It is a clear let-down in terms of image noise and details but for typical small prints this should not be an issue. Even the ISO 800 setting will make a nice small print. When we consider the good exposure, natural image colors and corner-to-corner sharpness, the total image quality is nice except for large prints. A lack of custom white-balance though is a problem in mixed lighting though.

The most impressive side of this digital camera is its speed. Every important aspect other than shot-to-shot speed is relatively fast. In good light, focusing speed is also quite good.

The package offered by the Olympus Stylus 7010 is one of simplicity and portability. At that it fullfills its niche. A great deal many competitord except though with wide-angle long-zoom lenses being not so uncommon now but the 7010 is the smallest camera with a 7X optical zoom that starts at wide-angle. An interesing option to consider is the Nikon Coolpix S640 which is also one fast ultra-compact... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 7010 provides a similar balance of dependably good pictures requiring little user input and dead simple ease of use that distinguishes many of today's more popular consumer digicams, but it's smaller, lighter, thinner, has a longer zoom (that starts at the equivalent of 28mm), and it's also cheaper than many of them.

Performance-wise, the Stylus 7010 ends up near the middle of the 12 megapixel ultra-compact digicams pack and like most of its contemporaries, it is probably not a good choice for those who like to shoot indoors or in low/dim light. The 7010 is true shirt pocket digital camera and it should appeal to casual photographers looking for a nifty little gadget to complement their iPhone and iPod, along with hikers, mountain bikers, backpackers, and space weight conscious travelers looking for a P&S digicam that packs lots of photographic potential into a small super-thin package with a long lens.... ”

“ Photo quality is about what you would expect for a camera under $200. It is not what they considered great but on the other hand it was not poor. Pictures taken with the 7010 were a little on the flat side indicated the reviewer however the colors were sharp and were rendered accurately. If you are headed into low light situation you can expect some additional noise in your images... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 7010 is a bit of a mixed bag. While the specification list looks very appealing, with 12-megapixels, a wide 7x zoom, and plenty of exposure options, the average image quality results, increase imager noise, and poor battery life bring this camera down. With a street price of US$199 or less, this camera does offers some nice features for the price, however I feel you will achieve higher quality photos by looking at some of the other offerings in the sub $200 category... ”

“ A camera that can do a lot without the operator knowing much about photography, though the video option is poor... ”

“ The mju-7010 is an interesting looking camera with a decent specification. Build quality and finish are of a high standard, it is versatile and easy to use, and it is capable of producing good results in most normal situations. However its poor low light performance, limited battery duration, lack of advanced features and relatively high price make it less appealing in comparison to some very capable rivals... ”

“ Despite the fact that Olympus has revamped its formerly rather tired looking menu icons and provided users with a funkier if cartoon-ish interface, plus shoehorned in some creative effects filters and user friendly features, the Mju 7010 is an otherwise fairly run-of-the-mill snapshot camera for the money. You can't help coming away from testing the Olympus for a week without feeling that Canon, Panasonic and Sony can all do this sort of thing better (albeit for £50 more if you'd like a model with HD movie capability).

Certainly performance at ISO400 and above is a let down - as are the rather cool, slightly washed out results delivered when shooting on the camera's standard default settings. On the plus side the latest Mju is for the most part responsive and intuitive to use, and shouldn't tax its target audience. Namely, we imagine, those trading up for a camera phone or someone looking for an inexpensive snapshot model to tuck into a shirt pocket or clutch bag when heading out on a Friday night.

Yes, others can do this sort of thing better and the tragedy here is that - without being too harsh - so too can Olympus itself... ”
