“ One real downside to the 790 SW was that you are locked into using xD memory cards and because of that you can not use state of the art cards like the Eye-Fi wireless card. One thing that surprised the reviewer was how the camera when switched into auto mode how well it could handle difficult lighting situations. Image quality was good however dynamic range tended to fluctuate shot-to-shot... ”

“ There's a lot to like in the Olympus Stylus 790SW, beginning with the fact that it has been specifically toughened to be taken everywhere: dropped on the ground, submerged in the water, left in the sand -- as the maxim goes, the camera that gets taken is the camera that gets used, and this camera is definitely designed to be taken. It is well-fitted with scene modes, and attempts to initiate a novice user with its guided shooting mode functionality, but in practice I found the textual shorthand that's used to guide the user to be a little too mysterious at times. Olympus has added some interesting touches to the camera, such as the ability to turn on the LED light and check the time while the camera's not switched on, and the "my favorites" selection is useful for showing off up to nine photographs. Its overall image quality, however, is consistently poor across the entire ISO range, with printed results at the lowest ISO only acceptable at 4x6. We've tested two samples and come up with the same unacceptably soft results. If you really need a rugged camera, and will only print 4x6 images, this is an okay choice, but we'd more strongly recommend the Olympus Stylus 770SW, whose images were closer to what we're used to seeing from a 7.1 megapixel camera, and it's even more rugged than the 790SW... ”

“ One of the main problems with this camera is that when Olympus built this rugged point-and-shoot it’s durability features seem to have created a situation where it is more difficult to perform basic camera functions. Soft images may be attributed to the protective lens covering plus under exposing in low light environments and the flash has a tendency to over expose... ”

“ Looking at the Mju 790 SW overall performance we are satisfied. I can imagine that the Olympus Mju 790 SW will do perfect for an active target group. This group highly appreciates the typical features that distinguish the Mju 790SW from the competition. And to be honest, I can quite understand that. For me a compact camera means: ease, usefulness and effortlessly taking snapshots. The Olympus Mju 790 SW will take on this role without a problem. I would recommend the Olympus Mju 790 SW for this specific target group. If however you want to dive deeper into photography you might want to take a look at the SP560 that Olympus offer... ”

“ The Olympus mju 790 SW is a welcome return to form for a series that has seen some image quality and performance problems. It offers a simple specification and basic feature set for the price, but apart from the disappointing video mode it performs well and is capable of taking high quality pictures in situations that would defeat most other cameras. If you're looking for a stylish compact that you can take almost anywhere, the 790 SW is the ideal choice... ”

“ The Olympus 790 SW lets you confidently take photos in situations where you’d worry about other cameras, or simply be unable to take them at all. Raining? No problem. Splashes from a canoe or kayak? Fine. Dropped in the snow while skiing or boarding? No sweat. Complete submersion underwater? Why not?

This makes it the ultimate type of camera for anyone who works or plays in adventurous environments, but it’s equally ideal for kids – or indeed anyone – who might knock a camera around. It’s certainly very liberating to have a camera you can leave by a poolside without worries of splashes - or indeed even take in the water with you.

But, and it’s a big but, the image quality isn’t anything to write home about. We’ve tested compacts which cost the same and deliver much better quality, while also boasting wider angle lenses and proper anti-shake facilities. So if you’re after the best image quality and photographic features, and aren’t bothered about the tough or waterproof aspects of the 790 SW, we’d recommend buying a different camera. See our Compact Buyers Guide for the best models around right now.

But if you’re the kind of person who’d love to take photos in wet or snowy conditions but reluctantly leaves your camera at home for safety, then the Olympus 790 SW is definitely one to consider. The quality may not be the best around, but it simply allows you to take photos in conditions where other cameras would fail. Outdoor and adventure sports enthusiasts will forgive the downsides and instead embrace the picture-taking opportunities of a camera that operates in the same conditions they do. As such it comes Recommended, but only for those who really need the tough and underwater capabilities... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 790 SW is a good digicam for the active user needing a weather resistant/water proof camera, and though Olympus claims it is also "Shock Proof" up to 5 feet, we opted not to test this feature. The 790's 7-megapixel SHQ images have plenty of resolution to create high- quality prints up to 13x19 inches or larger, however we had some issues with the poor position of the lens (my finger kept getting in the way), and I was a bit disappointed in the waterproof specs dropping from 33 to 10 feet. With an MSRP of $299.99, it offers an Ok value for a 7-megapixel underwater capable digicam... ”

“ Low-light performance was unimpressive; largely because the camera’s flash is weak and long exposure times are not supported. Even with the ISO 1600 setting, the flash was only just able to illuminate an average-sized room. Night-time outdoor shots taken with the ISO 1600 setting were too noise-affected to be usable... ”
