“ Colorful and durable, that's what the Stylus 850SW is. Not only is it waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof, the Olympus Stylus 850SW is compatible with two kinds of memory cards and comes with an LED lamp which you can actually use for various purposes.

This point-and-shoot solid (except the plastic tripod mount) camera may not have any manual controls but offers plenty of scene modes and photo features to make your pictures come out better on screen, or on print. Usability wise, the camera has a very useful help and guide system built in, the former bringing up tooltips on the camera's features. Unfortunately, the Stylus 850SW's tiny buttons grouped in a small space don't help ergonomics much. Image quality wasn't too pleasing to the eye either with softness and presence of noise, as well as some chromatic aberration (aka color fringing).

And so it all boils down to a single question: Looking for a camera that you can take swimming and diving, and a lot of abuse? If you are, check out the Olympus Stylus 850SW. But otherwise, you mind as well treat your camera well and take a look at other similar (but less rugged) cameras which offer better image quality.... ”

“ Although the mju 850 SW continues the rugged tradition of its predecessors, with bomb-proof build quality, attractive design and excellent overall performance, its restricted zoom range and limited list of features are starting to look a bit dated in today’s market. At £155 it is attractively priced, but compared to the superior photographic capabilities of the Pentax W60 it looks a bit weak, and its relatively poor picture quality is also a disadvantage. ... ”

“ If you're in the market for an all-weather, tough compact camera, there's nothing out there to compete with Olympus' SW range. The mju 850SW's image quality and handling might be a little frustrating in everyday use, but hit the slopes or the surf and you can simply keep on shooting when everyone else is too scared to try.... ”

“ I see the Olympus MJU 850 SW as a camera that you can use just about anywhere. The picture quality could be better, so it's more likely to appeal to someone who is after a snapshot camera they can have fun with rather than one that will produce the perfect picture. ... ”

“ Another great tough model from Olympus, the Tough 850SW only improves on its predecessor in a few small ways but it is still one of the best options if you're after a camera that can take a little more grief than normal.... ”

“ Olympus cover a huge market area with not only the Olympus ΅ [mju:] 850 SW, but all cameras from the ΅ [mju:] SW range. It's tough. Simple as that - if you're going away on holiday and want a camera you can use with the whole family, then this camera will do that for you. Be that on the beach or in the sea, in some cold and wet moorland of not-so-sunny England, or half way up an icy mountain - you can still take photos.

"Waterproof. Shockproof. Funproof," reads the new Olympus tagline. Having thrown the Olympus ΅ [mju:] 850 SW in the bath, tossed it in the air and even tried to have too much fun just as a means to break the hardy metal body... But it didn't happen.

The picture quality, lens range and the battery may not be top rank, but no other manufacturer has put as much effort into reinforcing (literally) a whole line of camera models. That's the ticket - the most significant reason to buy an Olympus ΅ [mju:] 850 SW is if you will distinctly benefit from its tough features. ... ”
