“ There are currently a number of cameras on the market with more or less similar specifications. We have already published a number of reviews of several digital cameras of this type. If we compare the test results, it becomes clear that the Mju 9000 scores only moderately, and should be improved on several points in order to reach comparable test results like the PowerShot SX200 IS or Lumix DMC-TZ7 cameras of Canon and Panasonic respectively. Without these improvements, the Olympus Mju 9000 is unlikely to be around for long. We look forward to the next generation compact mega-zoom Olympus cameras and will leave the Mju 9000 for what it is... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus-9000 finds itself in a category of camera just below the ultrazoom, but has just enough focal power to get itself out of the standard 3x zone. It aims to provide a broad spectrum of zoom range and 12 megapixels of high-resolution. The 12 megapixel club seems to the sweet spot where noise is filtered out because of larger pixel sites on DSLRs, but this mentality doesn't transfer well to the image sensor that is less than an inch on most point-and-shoots, including the Stylus-9000.

There is a lot to like about the Stylus-9000, including ease of use, the zoom power, iAuto function and quick AF. There are also some things that are less desirable, including little to no manual control over exposure settings, poor performance at high ISO sensitivities and the degradation found in some of the images.

With all things being considered, is the Stylus-9000 worth its price of $239 street? I took this camera with me on a three-day trip across the U.S. and never found a problem with it while snap shooting. This camera is geared for the casual shooter looking for focal power and full automatic controls and it doesn't demand all the precision of a more expensive camera with more manual control. The camera is a great travel companion, but it can't be pushed past the limits of a snap shooting camera. The Stylus-9000 is what it is, an entry-level to intermediate point-and-shoot with some cool features... ”

“ What began as an impressive display of features and build quality slowly soured as I used the camera more and more. If this camera can be kept in normal balanced daylight that's bright enough to use a low ISO then the results will be acceptable.

That's the problem, though. I'd expect them to be more than acceptable as a camera that sits higher than others in its range and no flashy graphics or lit up buttons can change that... ”

“ Claimed as the smallest 10x optical zoom digicam, the Olympus Mju 9000 has a slick pocketable plastic body accented in stylish chrome. Equipped with a 12-megapixel CCD sensor, this flagship of the Mju line-up is targeted at travellers who want a small, light, point-and-shoot digicam. Physically smaller than competitors like the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS, Panasonic TZ7 and Ricoh R10, the Mju 9000 is also less capable in many ways... ”

“ So what's the final feeling? Well the Olympus offers a good zoom and some nice features, however we weren't overly impressed with the image quality or the button layout on the rear of the camera.

Images seemed flat when reproduced, and although our test day was on the overcast side in terms of weather, even the bit of sun we did get didn't lift our spirits or image colour that much.

So what's the suggestion? If you aren't too fussed by the long zoom but want something with a little more oomph when it comes to pictures, the Nikon S620 might be the better bet, either that or wait a couple of weeks and will see if the SX200 is as good as Canon promises... ”

“ The Olympus Mju 9000 is a sensibly designed and well made camera with a very useful zoom range. It is easy to use, performs well and produces good results in most situations. However the lack of some important features such as an AF assist lamp or any colour adjustments limit its appeal somewhat, especially considering the relatively high price... ”

“ It's hard not to like the Olympus mju 9000. This is a well-made, easy to use point-and-shoot that will suit everyone in the family. The wide-angle 10x zoom is a real attraction in such a small camera, and should cover all eventualities for most of its target audience. Although low-light performance is a little patchy, with obvious noise and smearing of fine detail from ISO 400-1600, image quality is otherwise pretty good, with little distortion apparent at either end of the focal range, few signs of unwanted purple fringing, pleasing colours and a great 1cm macro mode.

But unfortunately it's also hard to recommend the Olympus mju 9000 when directly compared to its main rivals, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 and Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. Both of these cameras offer a more advanced feature set, 720p HD movie modes, more intelligent auto modes, better image quality and bigger zoom lenses and screens, and they also cost roughly the same price. If the Olympus mju 9000 had been released a year ago, it would have been a real contender, but in today's ever-competitive market it doesn't quite make the grade.

Which isn't to say that you should rule it out completely. The Olympus mju 9000 still has its main advantage of being smaller and lighter than its rivals, especially when compared to the Canon SX200 IS, and it certainly won't disappoint if you decide it meets all your needs. A good first attempt at the travel zoom by Olympus, but it ultimately falls short of the high standards set by Canon and particularly Panasonic... ”

“ In terms of appearance and overall functionality, the Mju 9000 is one of the nicest Olympus compacts we've tested in quite some time. It's a little bulkier than usual thanks to the 10x optical zoom but for the most part this is the pick of the bunch if you're looking at buying an Olympus.

Compared to its competitors from Panasonic and Canon (such as the Lumix TZ7 and the PowerShot SX200 IS), the 9000 is a more compact camera, and not as robust in terms of shooting capability and creative control. For AU$599 we would have liked to see more features, but if you are looking for an Olympus compact, the 9000 is the one to choose as long as you don't need a waterproof camera... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus 9000 aka Mju 9000 is a really small 12 megapixel camera featuring a big 10X optical zoom lens. It’s the smallest “super-zoom compact” camera you can get at the moment, and it fits nicely into most pockets. The camera has a large and very usable 2.7 inch LCD on the back and backlit controls for operation in low-light. Unfortunately, the Stylus 9000’s actual performance in low-light is quite bad, with poor focusing abilities and “mushy noise” at high ISO speeds.

The Stylus 9000’s operation is fully automatic – in Program mode, you get to choose preset white balance, ISO and metering mode options, and that’s the most “control” you can get in the camera. Other than that, you’ll find the usual handful of scene modes and Intelligent Auto, which automatically selects a scene mode for you.

The Olympus Stylus 9000 is suited for casual/leisure picture-taking in well lit conditions (its movie mode is not fantastic). It’s not particularly speedy, there are no manual controls and pictures are usable only up to ISO 400. I would only recommend (even then, not whole-heartedly) the Stylus 9000 if you MUST absolutely have the smallest 10X zoom camera in the market. Otherwise, there are other compact super-zoom cameras which sell around the same price, if not slightly higher, and are well worth a look... ”

“ The Olympus mju 9000's a fairly smart little camera. It beats the latest Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ6 and DMC-TZ7 with 12 megapixels to their 10, but they've got a 12x zoom instead. While the 9000 has an attractive finish, the TZ6 and TZ7 are ever-so-slightly neater and more elegant, although you may disagree... ”
