“ Pros
Camera works in extreme conditions, including low temperatures and shallow water
Camera has sturdy feel and can survive fall from up to 5 feet
Image quality is pretty good across the board
Lens has some wide angle capabilities
'Tap Control' feature makes it easy to operate camera when wearing thick gloves
Cons
Response times need to be better, especially start up
Low-light photos tend to have quite a bit of noise
LCD and optical zoom lens could be a little bigger
I like the way it looks, but this design won't appeal to everyone... ”

“ This is not the most expensive waterproof and shockproof camera, but it performs admirable for the average outdoor enthusiast at a very reasonable price. Picture quality is good. The screen is fantastic in bright sunlight. And the waterproof and shockproof qualities live up to their hype. The tap function works quite well making the camera good for cold weather or underwater photography. The camera is good-looking and easily pocketable... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 competes well in many areas against other rugged/waterproof camera models. We think our sample had a tilted sensor chip, as its images were very soft in one corner, the softness extending far into the frame. Were it not for that particular defect, its image quality was competitive in the category. It's also stylish, combines ruggedness with a waterproof rating of 10 feet, and it offers optical image stabilization as well. Our big complaint with it, though, was its sluggish performance. Shutter lag and shot to shot times were very slow, making it poorly suited for any kind of action shooting. Given that a camera as rugged as the Olympus 6000 invites use in all sorts of active settings, we find it hard to recommend for the active life it seems designed for. If you can afford the roughly $80-90 difference in street price, the Olympus 8000 offers higher resolution, better shutter response and cycle time, and is even tougher and more waterproof than the Stylus Tough 6000; a better camera all around... ”

“ Having just checked out Canon's new rugged point-and-shoot, the PowerShot D10, in summing up the Olympus Stylus Tough-6000 some comparisons are inevitable, and in this case, those comparisons largely yield a study in contrasts. The Tough-6000 is smaller, (significantly) more attractive, and better built than the Canon. It's also slower, heavier, and – with touches like xD memory and a slightly strange interface – quirkier than the straightforward D10. Quite a dilemma, indeed.

If you don't have delusions about the Stylus Tough-6000 becoming your one and only camera for family snapshots, you might just come away very satisfied with your choice. Used in its "native environment," for capturing photo-album shots in situations where it might get dropped or dunked, the Tough-6000 is an excellent performer, and its compact size and solid battery life are key advantages. Take it to a party or club, though, and the combination of lagging performance, slow flash recycle, and weak high-ISO output shows the 6000 to be more than a bit uncomfortable outside of its outdoor element.

At the end of the day, the Tough-6000 – which impressed us so much early on – left us feeling just a little disappointment after a month of testing. Maybe our expectations were too high. Regardless, it's a stylish, impressively solid little camera that handles itself well in the great outdoors. But for all of its adventure-photo advantages, the Tough-6000 is just a little too rough – or perhaps a little too tough – around the edges to be the all-in-one, general use answer we were hoping for... ”

“ The Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 is all about being a tough water-proof digital camera with a wide-angle lens. There are very few cameras like this but if you do not consider all these characteristics to be important, it is fairly easy to find a better ultra-compact. If you do give importance to these, then the Tough 6000 holds its own quite well.

Given good image quality and decent noise up to ISO 200, the Tough 6000 is an outdoors-type digital camera which easily produces print-ready images with accurate color and white-balance. Performance is slow for action but unfortunately average among ultra-compact. Taking issue of this camera's price when considering this is important because excellent image quality and speed - but without the rugged or waterproof exterior - can be had for a similar price.

Overall, the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 represents a good price-ruggedness compromise without sacrificing image quality too much. Olympus has the Tough 8000 which is more expensive but can be submerged up to 10 meters and dropped from 2m, which mostly benefits snorkelers instead of swimmers... ”

“ With a price to match your average 10-megapixel compact camera, the Olympus Mju Tough-6000 offers a good rugged approach without trying to sting you for it.

That rugged approach lives up to its name, giving you a camera that you can happily give to the kids or take to the beach without the fear of breaking it.

However those looking for a rugged camera to match their even ruggedier lifestyle might to better in opting for the Olympus Mju Tough-8000, the 6000's older brother. It sports a 12 megapixel sensor and the ability to go down 10m in the water, making it a better fit if you want to go beneath the surface.

If rugged is your thing, you don't want to print your pictures too large and you can put up with some fiddly controls, this might just be the camera for you... ”

“ One of the two latest cameras in the Olympus rugged camera line is the waterproof, drop proof and freezeproof Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 aka Mju Tough 6000. The Stylus Tough 6000 offers point-and-shoot operation in a fun design that comes in four colors. In terms of size, there are smaller rugged cameras out there, though the Stylus Tough 6000 is still pretty compact and fits into most pockets with ease.

The Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 features 10 megapixel, a wide-angle 3.6X zoom lens and adds a useful feature that old models lacked: sensor-shift image stabilization. While the 2.7 inch LCD is large and very usable, the buttons beside the screen are too small. There are two neat features on the Stylus Tough 6000 that the competition lacks; namely an LED illuminator for low-light, close-up and movie shooting as well as Tap Control which makes the camera easier to operate with gloves on.

There are a whole bunch of other things available like Shadow Adjustment, Perfect Shot Preview, built-in help tooltips, Beauty Mode and Intelligent Auto – some of which you could still live without, some others are features you’ll appreciate a lot. Some of those features are also available in the section of playback editing tools. What’s missing on the Stylus Tough 6000 are manual controls… there are none on the camera.

Camera performance was just average in all areas, except in terms of continuous shooting where things are very slow. Image quality was a mixed bag – the camera produces good image quality with low noise up till ISO 400 with two side issues. Anything above ISO 800 is unusable though.

With many handy features and scene modes, the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 aka Mju Tough 6000 is a decent point-and-shoot, rugged camera that I can recommend, with reservations. Why? The Stylus Tough 6000 isn’t the best camera in town – there are other rugged cameras with HD movie modes, better battery life, faster performance and better image quality. Before you leap for the camera, be sure to take a good look and consider other rugged camera options as well... ”

“ Olympus has changed the name of its new “SW” series models to the “Stylus Tough” series. The new Tough series incorporates all of the same qualities as the previous series such as the waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof construction that makes it the perfect go anywhere camera. The Tough 6000 also features a 3.6x wide optical zoom lens, 10-Megapixel CCD imaging sensor, 2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD screen, dual image stabilization, 25 shooting modes and tap control. It also sports many of the features that are found throughout Olympus’s collection of cameras: YouTube movie mode, Perfect Fix, Smile Shot and the very informative help button. One thing that is not found on this model is the “guide” spot on the mode dial.

Making the Stylus Tough 6000 easier to handle and operate in extreme conditions, Olympus has added its breakthrough "Tap Control" technology. When turned on, you can simply tap different areas of the camera to operate it. This is a must for underwater or in cold weather when the user is wearing gloves.

The Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 is great for the active or adventurous person as well as a great toy to keep around a pool. With the durability of the camera, there are no worries of children handling it. Performance and quality are ok, but the camera makes up for these with its unmatched versatility. With a MSRP of US$299, this is a great choice for people that want to document their adventures without the risk of breaking the camera from small bumps and accidents... ”
