“ I am already pining for the new FX48. I reach for this camera more than my Fujifilm F30 or even the new F200EXR. It’s smaller, it shoots 720p video, has a wider lens, and a better viewing screen. For serious photography, I break out the DSLR. For snapshots, I absolutely love this Panny... ”

“ The Lumix FX35 was one of our favorite cameras of 2008, but revisiting the essentially unchanged Lumix FX37 nearly a year later, it's much harder to make the case that this is one of the best, most versatile cameras out there. That's not because the FX37 has taken a turn for the worse compared to the FX35; rather, it's a reflection of the fact that more manufacturers have rolled out solid ultracompacts with wide-angle lenses in the last year. In an increasingly crowded field, the FX37's lens isn't the unique commodity it once was, and its overall performance is, to be fair, beginning to feel a little sluggish next to some of its lightning-fast competition.

To the positive, the FX37's ultra-wide Leica lens is still as good as ever: sharp, fast, and much more flexible than the normal-to-telephoto 3x zooms still found on many ultracompacts. But a great lens does not a great camera make, and with the rest of the FX37 starting to show its age, it's becoming increasingly hard to justify this premium model's premium price tag.

At the end of the day, the FX37 remains a fine camera. But with an update to the FX series (in the form of the recently announced FX48) just around the corner, it's probably worth the wait to see how the next FX cameras fare... ”

“ Because of its slow speeds, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 isn’t ideal for action photographers. At $349, it’s also more expensive than many point-and-shoots, but for that price you don’t have to choose between compact design and a versatile lens. It may not be as hip as the similarly priced Nikon Coolpix S60, which sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen, but it won’t disappoint... ”

“ The Panasonic Lumix FX37 is a very capable and very small digital camera with 10 megapixels, an ultra-wide 5X zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD. I would say the FX37 has an advantage over the competition with its 5X zoom lens that starts at 25 mm. If you like snapping landscapes, big group shots or “self portraits” with mates in the pub, then don’t underestimate the potential of this lens – its 3 mm difference makes it about 10% more wide-angle than a conventional 28 mm wide lens.

In addition, the Lumix FX37 offers class-leading battery life figures (along with its competitor, the Canon SD880), quick performance and Intelligent Auto, which is more “automatic” than ever. Did I mention the camera has a HD movie mode as well? Despite that, the downsides to the camera in these areas are the lack of manual control and movie zoom.

Both build quality and image quality of the Panasonic Lumix FX37 were good with some slight quibbles. The FX37 is compact and sturdy everywhere except the battery/card compartment door; and the camera takes good pictures in most cases, save for the occasional detail smudging of the imaging processor. The Venus 4 processor isn’t all that bad though; it does automatically remove color fringing.

The Panasonic Lumix FX37 earns a recommendation from me for offering good image quality in general, great performance in terms of speed, battery life and movie mode and with a really wide 25 mm lens you won’t find on any other camera this small... ”

“ The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 is a small and stylish point-and-shoot compact which doesn't truly bring that much of note – aside from the impressive 25mm-125mm 5x zoom lens – to the party. The suspicion is that the FX37 is plugging a gap in the range rather than striving for individual excellence. Issues with noise at ISO 400 and faster and an overall softness to images detract somewhat from the overall out-of-the-camera image quality, although 5 minutes in Photoshop or a similar application is enough to fix most of the issues. To focus momentarily on the positives, the Panasonic FX37 is reasonably well built, has a handy 720p HD video mode, and if you shop around it can be found for a much more enticing price than the official RRP. But there's little else to distinguish this model from a host of other slender build contenders, save for the user-friendly fact that if you leave the camera in Intelligent Auto mode, in theory the only other switch or option you'll ever need to touch is the slider for reviewing images. While that's good news for Granny, it's not quite enough however to save it from a score that indicates a point-and-shoot camera that doesn't truly stand out from the crowd. Ultimately the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 comes Recommended as a simple-to-use, family-friendly point-and-shoot that delivers fairly good results at a fairly attractive street price... ”

“ Overall, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 is a tough sell at $350. Its subpar performance and image quality, coupled with its often blurry LCD, are definite detractors. If you're looking for a pocket camera that offers HD video along with solid still shots, take a look at the Kodak V1073 and the Samsung NV24HD, both of which offer HD video with better overall still-image quality.... ”

“ If the Panasonic Lumix FX37 was crammed full of any more advanced technology it would glow blue and hum like a lightsabre, but for all its cleverness and sleek style it still suffers from significant image quality problems. The lens simply isn't as good as the one on the FX35, and the brutal noise reduction system robs images of detail and tonal subtlety. Considering its very high price, I'd have to say that it's simply not worth the money. Get the FX35 instead.... ”

“ The picture quality's above average, due mostly to the lens rather than the image processing, but the FX37's real strengths are the technologies inside its neat little body. Lots of makers stuff their cameras full of gimmicks, but the features here work well and are actually useful. ... ”
