“ Panasonic's first Wi-Fi enabled camera took a major nose-dive in an area that fuels its existence: Wi-Fi image uploading. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ50 rendered us haplessly flummoxed as we tried and tried to connect to various wireless networks and failed miserably each time. A hefty $120 is the only divide between the Lumix DMC-TZ50 and the Lumix DMC-TZ5, but after days of struggling, we had to throw in the towel. Its 10x optical zoom and above average low light performance are nice features, but they don't justify the purchase. Furthermore, shooting features are minimal and the camera occupies a little more space than necessary. Those who are Wi-Fi-curious should take a look at the Nikon Coolpix S51c, until Panasonic gets things together on this camera... ”

“ Now would I spend $449 USD for this camera—just to take pictures? No way on Earth. Would I spend an extra $150 USD list compared to a Canon SX110 IS? You know the answer before reading another word. To make it official—no, I wouldn’t. As noted at the beginning, some things just go together. As of this date, Wi-Fi and digital cameras should just go their separate ways. If you really want to share an image with friends, just send it through your cell phone. However, if you want a decent compact camera with a 10x zoom, check out the Wi-Fi-less TZ5 for $349 list, $299 or so in the real world... ”

“ In general, we recommend adding an Eye-Fi SD memory card to a camera for uploading over Wi-Fi because it supports several services, as opposed to just Picasa in the case of the TZ50S. And Panasonic charges a hefty premium for the wireless capability on this point-and-shoot. We say pick up the $100-cheaper Lumix TZ5 instead, which offers the same big zoom and good video quality but skips the Wi-Fi... ”

“ The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ50 is an outstanding little super-zoom. While this model is very similar to its siblings, the addition of the 9-megapixel imager, huge 3.0-inch LCD, 720p HD movie mode and Wi-Fi capabilities are greatly accepted and appreciated. If you are one who is in the market for a compact powerhouse, look no further. Offering good image quality, pleasing performance, and loads of user-friendly exposure modes, I have no problem giving the DMC-TZ50 a high recommendation. With a street price of US$399 or less, the TZ50 is a bit expensive, however I feel it's well worth it when you consider the amount of versatility you are getting in such a small package... ”

“ It’s hard to find fault with the TZ50 as a basic compact ultrazoom camera. The T50 offers all the performance and flexibility of the excellent TZ5, which is certainly why many consumers will find it so appealing. Sure, Panasonic could have made the TZ50 a much more useful photographic tool by including basic features like P/A/S/M modes, but the reality is that most point-and-shoot users won’t miss these features. The new Wi-Fi upload feature is sure to be attractive to many consumers looking to quickly share their vacation photos. Nevertheless, it’s hard to overwhelmingly recommend the TZ50 over the TZ5.

When everything is said and done, although the TZ50 allows you to wirelessly upload your images to your Picasa web gallery the process isn’t nearly as easy as it might sound. Since the TZ5 can be purchased for a full $100 less than the TZ50, I suspect most average consumers will be happier uploading images the “old fashioned way” directly from their desktop or laptop computers rather than stumbling through the clunky Wi-Fi interface on the TZ50.

If the Wi-Fi mode setup doesn’t scare you, though, the TZ50 makes an excellent choice for anyone who wants an ultrazoom camera and wants to quickly share photos while traveling... ”
