“ The Pentax K-x has very nearly the same body as the K2000. A few buttons are reassigned to accommodate Live View and Movie modes. When loaded with lithium batteries, the K-x weighs 20.5 ounces (581 grams) -- a full six ounces (170 grams) lighter than the magnesium alloy-bodied K-7. A significant part of that savings comes thanks to the Kx's use of a fiber-reinforced plastic polymer body over a stainless steel chassis, and the exclusion of any weather sealing. The K-x's body is also about 0.2 to 0.3 inches (5 to 8 millimeters) smaller in every dimension than the K-7, and is among the smallest true digital SLRs available... ”

“ When it was first announced, I wasn't terribly moved by the Pentax K-x. It seemed like just another entry-level digital SLR. After a survey of DCRP readers showed strong demand for a review of the K-x, I got my hands on one, and was quickly impressed with what Pentax has put together. The K-x is well built, feature-packed, responsive, and a great value for the money at just $649 (the street price is even lower). And it takes very good photos too. It has its share of flaws, but the list is fairly short. The most annoying things about it are the lack of AF point illumination in the viewfinder, a mediocre LCD, and a tendency to clip highlights. Despite those issues, the Pentax K-x is a fine camera, and a great choice for those looking to step into the world of digital SLRs... ”

“ If you can tolerate the slow Live View autofocus and a few minor handling flaws then this camera is a near perfect choice for a first DSLR. Just be sure the firmware is up-to-date to avoid possible power issues. Overall, the K-x offers an image quality and a photographic performance to rival many higher end cameras, with the inclusion of fun and user-friendly features to satisfy the most creative of beginners and enthusiasts alike... ”

“ The K-x is a very capable little camera indeed. Pentax has managed to squeeze what is, for this class of camera, an impressive feature set into the camera's miniscule, rather inconspicuous, body and the image quality, especially in low light, is the best we have seen so far in the entry-level bracket of the DSLR market. To put some icing on the cake, all of this comes at a currently, compared to the closest rivals, very attractive price point. To us the lack of visible AF points is the camera's only real drawback but if you can live with this omission you can't go wrong with the Pentax K-x... ”

“ In short, the K-x offers a lot of what made the K-7 one of the most exciting cameras of the year, at less than half the semi-pro camera's price. In one important way—the new 12.4-megapixel sensor from Sony, a variant of the reigning high-ISO APS-C champ—it even outclasses its big brother. It has the features, handling, and build quality to best most of its rivals, especially given its bargain price. The Nikon D5000 is equipped with a similar sensor and has a tilt-and-swivel LCD, but has an inferior viewfinder, a smaller ISO range, and costs more. The Canon XSi is outclassed in nearly all respects; the T1i puts up a stronger fight. It offers 1080p video recording (albeit at the less-desirable 20 or 30fps framerates), a larger and higher-resolution LCD screen, and a higher-resolution sensor, but inferior continuous shooting rate and a less-advanced autofocus system, not too mention a heftier price tag. With its small size, light weight, attractive color options, advanced functionality, great image quality, and low price, the K-x is a very attractive proposition not only for new dSLR users, but also for those looking for a complement to their existing enthusiast or semi-pro cameras... ”

“ Ultimately the K-x is a camera that will endeavour to provide both beginners and more experienced users with their, er, kicks. It’s an affordable, well-featured all-in-one device and very capable with it too, making it a tempting proposition for those not already wedded to a rival system due to ownership of pre-existing lenses... ”

“ The Pentax K-x is a worthy competitor for the major manufacturers out there, and is probably in line for the third best with the other smaller camera companies. Since the days of the K10D and the K100D, Pentax has made affordable DSLRs with great form factors, exceptional build quality and superb image quality. The K-x does not stray from that formula. The K-x is a great younger brother to their top-of-the-line K-7, though not without a few flaws.

The LCD isn't great, focusing in live view is frustrating, battery power is drained quickly, HD video is somewhat noisy, and it can be slow to process images. But what it lacks in these areas it makes up for in price, image quality, construction, the perfect resolution, unique in-camera processing options, exceptional ISO performance and continuous shooting speed.

The Pentax K-x offers a great value for its price. It gives you total control of image processing, manual shooting, a few post-processing shortcuts, and easy-to-use automatic and scene modes that makes it an entry-level to intermediate camera. Yes it has some quirks, it can be slow at times, and it drains battery juice at the drop of a hat, but we can't deny that the K-x is top notch otherwise... ”

“ The new Pentax K-x occupies the sweet spot between the entry-level K-m and prosumer K-7 cameras, combining the ease-of-use of the former with many of the advanced features of the latter. The 4.7 fps continuous shooting speed, speedy and accurate 11-point AF system, HD movies and an extensive ISO range of 100-12800 mean that Pentax should be onto a real winner with the new K-x.

The K-x offers a veritable wealth of options that will appeal to beginners and more experienced photographers alike. The combination of Live View, small and lightweight design and hand-holding auto modes make the K-x an easy upgrade option for compact camera owners, while the extensive range of manual modes, wide ISO range, fastest shutter speed of 1/6000th, 100,000 shutter life-span and not one but two RAW formats more than cater for the experts. And whether you're shooting in JPEG or RAW mode, there are a wide range of options for getting the best out of your images, with the K-x offering the most in-camera editing options of almost any DSLR on the market.

The inclusion of HD video is sure to generate a lot of interest in this mid-range DSLR, but unfortunately, as with most of the other DSLR cameras on the market that offer video recording, it's not the most user-friendly experience. There's no handy one-touch recording, a reliance on manual focusing, inability to change the aperture or shutter speed during recording, large file sizes that quickly fill your memory cards, and the inherent handling quirks of the DSLR format.

On a more positive note, the K-x's image quality is excellent. The K-x creates noise-free JPEG images from ISO 100-800, only starting to become apparent at ISO 1600, with progressively more noise and colour desaturation at the highest settings of 3200, 6400 and the attention grabbing 12,800 setting. Although the top speeds don't produce very usable results, the K-x certainly holds its own against the main competition from 100-3200.

Exposures were generally around 1/3rd EV stop under-exposed and colours were accurate using the Bright setting, although the default sharpening setting results in images that are a little soft. Shooting in either of the two RAW modes ultimately produced better-looking images than the JPEG mode, especially as you can use the widely-supported DNG format, although you've obviously got all the post-processing overheads that go with RAW.

The HDR mode makes it easy to create images with greatly expanded dynamic range, although you don't have too much control over the final effect and you really need to use a tripod to keep the subject sharp due to the method of combining multiple exposures. The D-Range options help make the most out of both the shadows and highlights in a high-contrast scene, while the extensive range of digital filers, custom images and the multi-exposure mode are nice creative additions.

The Pentax K-x is a small, light and easy-to-use DSLR camera that punches well above its mid-range weight. The only major negative that we can think of is its diminutive size, which for many people will actually be a positive. We're certainly convinced - the Pentax K-x is our new favourite "affordable" DSLR and fully deserving of our rarely-awarded Essential / 5 Star rating... ”

“ It's not a K-m in disguise despite the same chassis, as the all-new insides keep it fresh and advanced. I like the look of this new camera from Pentax, I think turning their attention to innovative features over pixel count is a good idea regardless of the research. I think with the improved performance of the camera and the fun features, this could be a winner in the build up to Christmas. Especially with the price point that the camera is listed at.

I can't wait to get hold of the final production model for review and put it through its paces and with an availability of late September at the earliest, it shouldn't be too long... ”

“ The K-x manages to offer plenty of functionality in a small package, and produces images of a high standard. As a beginner's camera it provides plenty to explore, while equally it wouldn't be out of place as backup to a more expensive model, given its portability. The lack of AF-point illumination and the low-resolution LCD screen may put some off, but for such foibles it makes up in other areas such as the impressive focusing system. It might not be for everyone, but as a contender to Canon and Nikon's alternatives it puts up a mighty good fight... ”
