“ The Pentax K200D is a capable digital SLR, a very good choice for consumers who are starting to chafe against the limitations of a point-and-shoot digital camera and want to work with a more advanced camera. I'm calling it a bridge camera, as it has plenty of functions built-in that will be familiar to point-and-shoot digicam users, but also maintains the advanced modes and features of regular SLR cameras. For owners of Pentax film SLRs and lenses who haven't yet made the switch to digital, the Pentax K200D offers enough customization to keep more advanced users happy. Autofocus in low light is slower than other models we've seen, but the K200D often comes to a decision where other digital SLRs just give up. Color is quite good, though sometimes on the warm side, but both the built-in flash and accessory bounce flash eliminate this problem. Pentax has shifted gears a little in the transition from the K100D to the K200D, removing the high-ISO option of 3,200 but adding a ISO 100 option. Performance is excellent to ISO 400, still very good at 800, only showing some issues with chroma and edge degradation at ISO 1,600. The addition of Extended Dynamic Range is interesting, providing some preservation of highlights in high-contrast scenarios, though it's not so much of a sea change that people noted in other cameras attempting the same idea.

As we were impressed with the Pentax K100D, we're equally impressed with the K200D; Pentax hasn't messed anything up with an already-good design, they've just refined and improved on many areas. Pentax is bringing an impressive collection of lenses to bear, some standard and some unusual, that deliver excellent optical performance. As for the Pentax K200D, it's a small, well-conceived SLR design with solid image performance. The Shake Reduction system in the K200D is very good, as good as or better than other competitor's offerings, and provides the bonus of turning your entire lens collection into shake-reduced lenses. The K200D is not without its shortcomings: there's the poor low-light metering, the minor pixel-mapping / hot pixel issues, the menu is slower than we'd like, and the buffer fills up quickly with images shot in rapid succession. However, despite its shortcomings, the Pentax K200D offers more bang for the buck than competing systems in this range. It's definitely worth considering if you're shopping for an entry-level digital SLR, and worthy of a Dave's Pick... ”

“ Cameras like the Pentax K200D are designed to attract non digital SLR users to the mirrorcam fold, although you don't have to be a newbie to appreciate this model's affable feature set. There may be smaller and lighter compact DSLRs in the market, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a friendlier one than the 10.2-megapixel K200D, which sells in the $499-$550 body-only range.

For a compact DSLR, the K200D is beefy, weighing in at 2.87 pounds with its standard 18-55mm lens, but it's well balanced which makes it feel lighter than it is.

Like many DSCs in the category, this Pentax model has an APS-C sized sensor, which is slightly smaller than a frame of 35 millimeter film... ”

“ The Pentax K200D is competing in a very crowded segment of the marketplace. All manufacturers have been increasing the number of features and the quality of their cameras over the past couple of years or so and the entry-level segment is characterized by fierce competition. So, was the step that Pentax made from the K100D to the K200D enough to stay a serious alternative to the big boys in this bracket of the market?

All in all, the excellent image quality you can get out of the camera's RAW files, the build quality and good overall feature-set are enough to let the K200D slip into our Highly Recommended category. Before you now go out and buy one though, make sure you can live without a live-view system and, if image quality is paramount, you'll be willing to shoot in RAW.... ”

“ The K200D’s strengths and weaknesses against the competition are pretty consistent from the comparisons above. For the same money or a little less you could buy a lighter DSLR with Live View facilities and either a flip-out screen or faster continuous shooting. Or you could ignore the gadgetry, go for the K200D and enjoy superior build quality with weatherproofing along with a few fairly unique features like a top info screen, RAW button and AA battery power.

So while the K200D may be missing out in some respects, it does boast by far the best build quality of any entry-level DSLR. Couple that with the upper screen and unique RAW options, along with plenty of control over processing and customisation, and you have a DSLR which really stands out from the crowd and one we can Highly Recommend. Ultimately if you want a tough DSLR with weather-proofing, but can’t stretch to a semi-pro model, then the K200D really is your only choice. ... ”

“ At first glance the Pentax K200D simply looks like an incremental upgrade of the K100D Super, with relatively few additions on offer apart from the 10 megapixel resolution (up from 6 megapixels) and a couple of new buttons. Thankfully Pentax have also made a substantial number of improvements under the hood that help improve on what was already an excellent camera, borrowing both the sensor and other features from the K10D. The new Sv shooting mode, greatly-improved battery life, digital effects during playback including RAW development, and dust and water-resistant weatherproof sealing are all extremely welcome at this price-point, and there are more nice touches too numerous to mention. The only significant missing feature for some people will be the lack of a Live View mode.

Just like the Pentax K100D Super, the K200D ticks very nearly all of the boxes for those wanting an easy to use DSLR that delivers images you'll want to keep straight out of the camera, and with the minimum of user input and effort to boot. The Pentax K200D produces images of excellent quality, with noise-free images at ISO 100 all the way up to ISO 800, very little purple-fringing, accurate colours and a useful built-in flash and Bulb exposure mode. Only the noise levels at ISO 1600 and the lack of a faster 3200 setting mark the K200D out as an entry-level model. If you don't require fantastic image quality at high ISO speeds, then the K200D certainly holds its own against the competition in terms of image quality. ... ”

“ Bottom line - the K200D is a very nice entry-level dSLR. The new 10.2-megapixel CCD image sensor, combined with a lot of modern technology creates a wonderful camera for the price. The in-body Shake Reduction capability and improved Dust Reduction system show that PENTAX is serious about providing a great camera for the beginner. I might have liked to see a Live View function but would the novice photographer miss it? The K200D is a fantastic value both at US$699 for the body alone or in a kit with the PENTAX DA 18-55mm II lens for US$799. ... ”

“ The Pentax K200D does a great job for what it's designed to do. It manages to create decent shots for any photographic style which is great for the learner trying to find a niche.

My main problem is the price. The ePHOTOzine shop has it at £469.99 body only, which is expensive for this classification. Kits are available if you look around, but are around the £550 price mark.... ”

“ The handling of the K200D is very simple yet it maintains a reassuring, more professional build quality. Images are sure to please even the most critical photographer, with few serious problems bar slight underexposure on rare occaisions. There are plenty of features to keep beginners and advanced users happy, with the only major disappointment coming from the drive speed.... ”
