“ The Pentax Optio P70 is a promising but ultimately flawed point-and-shoot camera. It has one big problem, namely the agonisingly slow image processing and general operational speed. You will quickly become tired of seeing either a blank LCD screen or the flashing message "Data being processed", and even more tired of missing out on photo opportunities as the camera takes an eternity to process each individual shot. The problem gets even worse if you turn on the Pixel Track SR anti-shake option, with each image then taking an incredible 10 seconds or more to process. We haven't seen such tardy performance for many years, and it's enough to put us off the P70 entirely.

Which is a real shame, as the P70 is also a well-designed, well-made and well-featured little camera with a versatile lens and acceptable image quality. The wide-angle zoom is a real bonus in such a small and thin camera, and the wealth of beginner-friendly options make it a great choice for use by all the family. The HD movie mode is somewhat curtailed by the strange choice of the slow and jerky 15fps frame rate, but even that's forgivable on a camera that costs less than £200 / $200.

Sadly we can't say the same thing about the Pentax Optio P70's achilles heel - we can really only recommend this camera if you have the patience of a saint and you only ever take pictures of subjects that don't move... ”

“ Despite a few compromises, the Optio P70 offers good value for a small, light camera that you can carry anywhere. Considering its12-megapixel sensor, the camera delivers rather lackluster image quality, but it’s certainly adequate for the price. Though the Optio P70 lacks a few frills, it is a good value for a stylishly thin point-and-shoot... ”

“ Pentax have managed it again using the stackable lens system to get a larger zoom into a thin body and the Optio P70 is another display of their talent for this kind of thing. However, they need to address more pressing issues such as noise control if they want to really get ahead of the game.

If you want a slim line pocketable point and shoot camera and you'll be using it for landscapes in bright light then give this one some thought... ”

“ Pentax describes the P70 as a "high performance model," and if lens quality and/or shutter lag are the criteria then it fits the bill on those counts. For me personally, the most frustrating aspect of digitals are pokey shutters, and if a camera takes the shot promptly after I push the button then it's off to a good start in my book.

The P70 provides nice image quality with generally accurate color and shooting options that remind me of Henry Ford's Model T: "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black." With P70, the camera will shoot in any mode so long as it is automatic.

ISO performance is comparable to the competition but the camera lacks stabilization. Of course, it also lacks the higher price tag that is the entry fee for stabilization. Continuous shooting rates at full resolution are disappointing but exposure calculation is good. All in all, the P70 offers fairly middle of the road performance in most categories wrapped around a lens with very good optical qualities... ”

“ Pentax has recently released the Optio P70, an all new ultra-compact digicam which is the lightest and easiest to carry of all the Pentax models. Sporting a 12-Megapixel imaging sensor, 2.7-inch LCD screen, 4x wide optical zoom lens, HD movie capture and a handful of other creative features that assist you in capturing better photographs. Such features included Face Detection, Pixel Track Shake Reduction, Digital Shake Reduction, Smile Capture and Blink detection. In short, this camera has everything you could hope for in a compact digicam.

Like many other Optio series cameras, the P70 is a simple point-n-shoot model with fully automatic operation when used in Green, Auto Picture or any of its 22 Scene modes. Auto scene mode even chooses the best of 8 shooting modes for you based on the current shooting situation. While those options are perfect for the beginner, the P70 offers some more advanced control when using the Program exposure mode. Here, novice users can adjust the ISO, Metering, White balance, Exposure compensation, Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation, etc. Combined, these modes make this a camera that can easily be used by anyone in the family... ”

“ Pentax gave the P70 the ability to capture video at up to an HD resolution of 720p, but only at 15 frames per second. So while the quality of the video is nice for an ultracompact camera, it's not exactly smooth looking. You're better off keeping it in 640x480 at 30fps, especially if the movie is destined for online sharing. Also, the 4x optical zoom doesn't work in Movie mode.

If there's a follow-up model to the P70 (and I hope there is), it's going to need better processing speed. The design is excellent, the features very good, and the photos are perfectly suitable for who I see as the target user: someone wanting better photos than they can get from their cell phone without sacrificing the portability and convenience. It just needs to be faster... ”

“ The Pentax P70 is a camera with both good and bad points. It looks great, is well made and is extremely easy to use. It has a useful zoom range, the monitor is nice and it has some useful advanced features including an effective digital SR system. Image quality is good under most circumstances, low-light performance is also above average, and it is certainly good value for money. However it is let down by very slow performance, especially when using the digital SR feature... ”

“ It’s sleek, stylish and has lots of features, as well as a novel vertical shooting mode. But the Optio P70 is let down by its performance, especially when used indoors... ”
